1 ORTHODOX LIFE March 2015 ΟΡΘΟΔΟΞΗ ΖΩΗ, Μάρτιος 2015 Saint Nectarios Greek Orthodox Church Tel. # (617) Belgrade Avenue, Roslindale MA Two Chroniclers of Holy Lives On March 11 the Church celebrates the memories of two saints who collected and recorded accounts of the lives of holy people. They lived in different times and places, but shared the conviction that Christians always need examples of courageous faith. Saint Sophroniοs of Jerusalem was born in Damascus in about 560. He became a monk and entered the Monastery of Saint Theodosius, where he was befriended by the hieromonk John Moschοs, and became John's disciple. The two traveled together through monasteries in several countries, gathering inspiring stories of the monks and elders they met. Their collection has come down to us as a book called "The Spiritual Meadow." In the prologue, which he dedicates to Sophroniοs, Saint John Moschοs describes a meadow full of flowers of various colors, each with their own beauty. Similarly, he writes, holy men serve God in different ways, but all are equally pleasing to Him. Like meadow flowers, the men he writes about are different, but their varied examples all can lead others to lives of holy service. He continues: "Just as a bee seeks out only what is useful and true, so I have described the lives of the holy fathers that souls may be enlightened." Saint Sophroniοs himself was a prolific writer. His work includes 950 troparia and stikhera, many odes, a life of Saint John the Almsgiver, and the Prayer for the Great Blessing of Water at Theophany. He is also the author of the Life of Saint Mary of Egypt. This is the only saint's life that is a requisite part of an Orthodox worship service; it is read during the fifth week of Great Lent. Saint Sophroniοs saw heresies divide the Church, and was forced as Patriarch to surrender the city of Jerusalem to Saracen, or Muslim, conquerors. But his personal example and his writings about other exemplary people continue to be "useful and true." Cordoba, Spain in the 850's was also a time and place in which Christians lived under Muslim rule. Saint Eulogiοs of Cordoba, the second chronicler commemorated on this day, was born sometime before 819, and raised in a devout Christian family. He was sad to see some Christians getting comfortable with their second-class citizenship and becoming increasingly assimilated. Then there were others who fearfully 1

2 concealed or even abandoned their faith in order to "get along" in the dominant culture. Troparion - Tone 5 Patriarch Sophroniοs, you were glorious in the splendor of sobriety, and through the radiance of your words you revealed ineffable enlightenment from heaven. For by your life you attained wisdom and now you confirm the Church as an illustrious hierarch and intercessor for us with the Lord. Saint Eulogiοs wanted to inspire his fellow Christians to be braver and more faithful. He collected and wrote stories of Cordoban Christians who refused to deny or hide their faith and were martyred. Among them were priests, government officials, monks and nuns, soldiers, and other believing men and women. Saint Eulogiοs himself was beheaded when the authorities discovered that he was hiding Christians. A reading for this day is Proverbs 9: 11, in which God promises the wise that He will add years to their lives. Saints Sophroniοs and Eulogiοs knew that those promised years would be granted in a world beyond this one, where peace overcomes the strife they wrote about in their accounts of holy people. 11 Μαρτίίου ΕΚΛΟΓΗ ΑΠΟ ΤΟΝ ΣΥΝΑΞΑΡΙΣΤΗ ΤΟΥ ΜΑΡΤΙΟΥ Θεοδώώρας της βασιλίίσσης ΆΆρτης, της εκ Σερβίίων Κοζάάνης. Η Οσίία Θεοδώώρα, ήήταν κόόρη του Ιωάάννη Πετραλίίφη, άάρχοντα της Θεσσαλονίίκης, επίί Αλεξίίου του Κοµμνηνούύ. Σε νεαρήή ηλικίία έέλαβε σύύζυγόό της τον Μιχαήήλ Δούύκα, κατοπινόό άάρχοντα της Ηπείίρου. Ωστόόσο παράά τις τιµμέές και τα αξιώώµματα, η Θεοδώώρα παρέέµμεινε ταπεινήή στο φρόόνηµμα και φρόόντιζε να περιποιούύνται τους πτωχούύς και αδυνάάτους. ΌΌµμως µμεγάάλη δοκιµμασίία περίίµμενε την αγίία όόταν ο σύύζυγόός της δεσµμεύύτηκε µμε µμίία πόόρνη, τη Γαγρίίτη, και παραµμέέλησε εντελώώς τη Θεοδώώρα. Η αγίία όόµμως έέδειξε και σ` αυτήή τη περίίσταση το ψυχικόό της µμεγαλείίο και µμε τη θερµμήή της προσευχήή κατόόρθωσε να επαναφέέρει το σύύζυγόό της στο δρόόµμο του Θεούύ. Ο σύύζυγόός της ζήήτησε συγγνώώµμη και έέζησαν µμαζίί µμε πνεύύµμα Θεούύ. Μετάά το θάάνατόό του η αγίία αποσύύρθηκε στο Μοναστήήρι του Αγίίου Γεωργίίου, που η ίίδια έέκτισε και έέζησε ασκητικήή ζωήή έέως την ηµμέέρα της οσιακήής κοιµμήήσεώώς της. 2

Το Κατηχητικό Σχολείο διοργανώνει εκδήλωση για την Σαρακοστή την Παρασκευή 6 Μαρτίου στις 5.30 μμ. Το Ανοιξιάτικο πρόγευμα της Νεολαίας θα πραγματοποιηθεί την Κυριακή 8 Μαρτίου μετά τον εκκλησιασμό. Θα ακολουθήσει ομιλία της Δρ. Ελισάβετ Μεταλλινού-Κατσαρού (καλεσμένης της ομάδας WILS) με θέμα την παραδοσιακή ελληνική δίαιτα. Το Ελληνικό Σχολείο εορτάζει την Ημέρα της Ελληνικής Ανεξαρτησίας την Κυριακή 22 Μαρτίου, μετά τον εκκλησιασμό. Το ΠΤΑ θα προσφέρει γεύμα. Ομιλία του π. Βασιλείου στην Ενοριακή Βιβλιοθήκη θα πραγματοποιηθεί την Πέμπτη 19 Μαρτίου στις 11 το πρωί και την Παρασκευή 20 Μαρτίου στις 5.00 μμ με θέμα: Η Μεγάλη Εβδομάδα. 4

5 ΝΕΑ ΦΙΛΟΠΤΩΧΟΥ PHILOPTOCHOS NEWS Αγαπητά Μέλη και Φίλοι της Φιλοπτώχου Αδελότητητος Με μεγάλη μας λύπη -λόγω του καιρού- το καθιερωμένο ετήσιο Αποκριάτικο Γεύμα δεν έγινε. Ζητάμε από όλους εσάς που το περιμένατε μια μεγάλη συγγνώμη. Αντί αυτού του Γεύματος θα διωργανώσουμε Γεύμα μια Κυριακή μετά το Πάσχα για να εορτάσουμε την Ανάσταση του Χριστού μας! Η ημέρα αυτή θα ανακοινωθεί σε προσεχές ενημερωτικό δελτίο. Σας ευχαριστούμε που πάντα βοηθάτε το έργο μας! The Philoptochos Meat-Fare luncheon was cancelled due to the bad weather. However, we are planning another Luncheon at the Parish Hall after Easter. Also, a Loukoumathes Day will be held at the Hall on Sunday, March 1 after Church services. Θεοδώρα Χρονοπούλου- Πρόεδρος ΝΕΑ ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΟΥ ΣΧΟΛΕΙΟΥ GREEK SCHOOL NEWS Αγαπητοί Γονείς και Φίλοι του Ελληνικού μας Σχολείου, Με την συμμετοχή μέρους του Ελληνικού Σχολείου του Αγ. Σπυρίδωνος, από την πολιτεία του Rhode Island, και των δικών μας παιδιών, γιορτάστηκε η εορτή των Τριων Ιεραρχών την Κυριακή 1 η Φεβρουαρίου. Συγχαρητήρια στις Μητέρες και Γιαγιάδες για τις νόστιμες τυρόπιττες που μας προσέφεραν!!! Μάρτιος, ο μήνας του εορτασμού της Εθνικής μας Εορτής! ΚΥΡΙΑΚΗ 22 ΜΑΡΤΙΟΥ αρχίζει η γιορτή με Γεύμα που θα μας ετοιμάσει ο Σύλλογος των Γονέων. Θα ακολουθήσει η εορτή του Ελληνικού μας Σχολείου. Σας περιμένουμε όλους. The next Greek School celebration is on Sunday, March 22 (Greek Independence Day). A Luncheon will be held by the PTA before the students presentation.
