The Ramsar Convention about Wetlands signed in the city of Ramsar, Iran, in 1971, as an intergovernmental agreement. Since then, the anniversary of the Convention signature, February 2nd, 1971, is marked and is used to be celebrated every year as the World Wetlands Day. Wetlands Importance: The wetlands provide essential ecological services and are regulators of hydrological systems and sources of biodiversity at all levels - species, genetic and ecosystems. The wetlands are of great economic, scientific, cultural and recreational value to the community. The wetlands play a vital role in mitigating climate change. Progressive degradation and loss of wetlands causes serious and sometimes irreparable environmental damage to the supply of ecosystem services. The wetlands should be maintained and where possible restored. The wetlands are lost: More than half of the world wetlands have been lost over the last 100 years. Greater destruction and degradation has been observed during the first half of the 20th century in the Northern Hemisphere and has increased since 1950 in the Southern Hemisphere. It is estimated that Europe has lost 60% of the wetlands. In Cyprus there is no evidence for loss of wetlands, but many species of wild flora and fauna many of which are endemic or rare and endangered, live in the wetlands. Protection measures/actions: Until today more than 1912 wetlands that cover more than 186 million of hectares were included in the Convention and they were nominated as Wetlands of International Importance. Consequently, the wetlands constitute natural resources with great environmental value because of the diversity of their ecosystems and their biohabitats. Besides, beyond the various species that live permanently and are developed there, wetlands constitute factor of great importance for the survival of an important number of migratory birds as they are used both as intermediary stations of supply during their big travels and as places of wintering. Important wetlands of Cyprus, as the salt marsh of Larnaca or the wetlands of Akrotiri peninsula constitute ecological national wealth and precious bequest. Moreover, as human depends immediately from his environment, is obvious that such precious ecosystems as the wetlands are, should be protected aiming both at their rational management as well as the elimination of dangers of degradation or of their alteration.
Within this framework, the Cyprus Centre for Environmental Research and Education organised this year the 7th Pan Cyprian celebration for the World Wetlands Day. The event was supported by the Cyprus Ecological Movement, by the Cyprus Environmental Movement Enarmonisi, the Cyprus Birdlife Organization and the Naturalist-Mountaineering Group of Limassol. Besides, this year s celebrations having as Slogan Forests for Water and Wetlands, are really special because 2011 is also the Convention s 40 th anniversary year. The celebration was a chance for the public, representatives of the Government, environmental NGOs, as well as representatives of the church to meet, exchange opinions and celebrate this day. Since this year, it is the UN s International Year of Forests; we have a valuable opportunity to ensure that wetlands and their links with forests are not forgotten. These interconnections are included into three main headings: Forested wetlands and the special benefits they bring. Mangroves, peat swamp forests, freshwater swamp forests: biologically diverse, helping us manage our freshwater, and providing us with many other services across the globe including vital roles in carbon storage our allies in the face of climate change. Despite their utility, they are often under threat from development, from drainage and conversion. The role of forests wet or not in our lives, and why looking after them matters. Vital to all human lives, freshwater availability on a global scale depends on our forests. So too, to a large extent, does freshwater quality. The role of forests in how our wetlands function. It s simple: the health of our wetlands, whether forested or not, is linked to the health of forests in our catchments. Losing and degrading forests means losing and degrading wetlands. The celebration took place on Sunday 30 th of January at the Cyprus Centre for Environmental Research and Education in the Farm of St. Nikolaos, at the Akrotiri peninsula, a place of high ecological value and acquaintance for its important wetlands, giving thus the opportunity to the visitors to learn and to be informed about the wetlands of the region as well as about their importance. In the event that was marked with great success participated more than 150 people. The event included visit in the Wetland of the Despotiki Limni (Bishop s Lake), presentations on wetlands and their importance as well as Messages from the Secretariat of the Ramsar Convention, the Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment, the Minister of Education and Culture, the Bishop of Holy Church of Limassol, the President of the Federation of Cyprus Environmental Organizations, the president of Birdlife Cyprus Association as well as messages from Mr. Christos Pourgourids and Mr. Rikkos Erotokritou (Members of the Parliament) and Mrs. Ioanna Panayiotou, General Secretary of the Cyprus Green Party.
Cyprus Centre for Environmental Research and Education (CY.C.E.R.E.) provides education programs and takes dynamic actions for the conservation of Cyprus biodiversity and natural environment. CY.C.E.R.E aims to contribute in environmental conservation through environmental education, research and information. So far 22 000 students from private and public schools of Cyprus have participated in the environmental programs that CY.C.E.R.E offers. The variety of the environmental programs creates a pathway towards a more sustainable future. These programs aim to enable students to take actions that create and maintain an optimal relationship between themselves and the environment, and to preserve and protect the unique natural resources of Cyprus. CY.C.E.R.E was founded in 2004 by Holy Church of Limassol and its site at the Akrotiri Peninsula is an advantage for the Environmental Centre as the visitor has direct access to a variety of ecosystems and organisms of outstanding importance.
The celebration of CY.C.E.R.E. aimed to highlight the importance of wetlands at our island. Akrotiri Peninsula includes a significant wetland complex qualified for listing as a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention. Akrotiri salt lake, as well as a number of salt marsh vegetation communities that have been developed around the lake and that are really important for a range of wetland birds including flamingo Phoenicopterus rubber, Fassouri marshes that lie to the northeast of the salt lake as well as Despotiki Limni (Bishop s Lake) that constitutes the last Cypriot and also European freshwater habitat/station for the migratory birds, create the greater wetlands complex in Cyprus. Beyond definitions, these wetlands are vital ecological and cultural features in Cyprus landscape. It is essential that we preserve and take action for the conservation of these vulnerable and threatened ecosystems so the future generations will have the opportunity to benefit from them as we did. Yours sincerely, Dr. Andreas Ch. Hadjichambis Scientific Director of Cyprus Center for Environmental Research and Education
