1. Overview This deliverable is part of component 5 of the project and it comprises of the first version of the project website. It includes the aesthetic design of the website, its implementation, and its population with information from the application and technical annex. The deliverable starts by generally describing the website and its structure and continues by providing its content. The website s objective is to promote the visibility of the project and augment the impact of its results by informing the public of the results of each successive deliverable completion and by facilitating communication between the public and the post-doc researcher. Throughout the duration of the project the number of clicks on the site will be monitored to ascertain the number of people who visited it. News about the progress of the project will frequently be updated. The site is bilingual, in order to best reach all of the project s target audiences. The supported languages are Greek and English. Περιγραφή έργου Το έργο-μεταδιδακτορική έρευνα, ερευνά αρχαία ελληνική λυρική ποίηση και πιο συγκεκριμένα τους επινίκιους ύμνους του Πινδάρου και του Βακχυλίδη στο ιστορικό, κοινωνικό και πάνω από όλα, γεωγραφικό τους περιβάλλον. Οι ωδές συνθέτονταν για να εορταστούν μεγάλες Πανελλήνιες αθλητικές νίκες τις οποίες χαιρέτιζαν από διάφορες πόλεις και περιοχές της Ελλάδος, συμπεριλαμβανομένων και των ελληνικών αποικιών στη Νότια Ιταλία (Μεγάλη Ελλάδα). Οι δύο περιοχές, η τοποθεσία που επετεύχθη η νίκη και η πατρίδα του νικητή, διαμορφώνουν την τοπογραφική ραχοκοκαλιά κάθε επινίκιας ωδής, και ο σημαντικός τους συνυπολογισμός στα ποιητικά κείμενα παραδοσιακά προσεγγιζόταν ως ένα από τα απαραίτητα στοιχεία στο εγκωμιαστικό πρόγραμμα του ποιητή (Bundy, E. L. 1962. Studia Pindarica. Berkeley). Αυτή η ερμηνεία όμως, δεν λαμβάνει υπόψη σε όλη τους την έκταση τις επαναληπτικές αναφορές στις δύο τοποθεσίες, συνήθως στην αρχή και το τέλος των ωδών, και την επιμονή στη εναλλαγή της προσοχής ανάμεσα στις δύο. Ακόμη πιο πέρα, αυτά είναι και τα μόνα είδη τοπικών προσδιορισμών που εντοπίζονται Project Website 1.0 8

στις επινίκιες ωδές: διάφορα μυθολογικά διηγήματα είναι, μονότονα ανεπτυγμένα ή υπαινίσσονται επέκταση των ποιητικών γεωγραφικών οριζόντων ακολουθώντας θεμελιακές αφηγήσεις, αναπτύσσοντας γενεαλογίες ή καταλογογραφώντας ηρωικά κατορθώματα. Ο συνυπολογισμός του ζητήματος του μυθικού αντικειμένου έχει παρομοίως ερμηνευθεί στο εγκωμιαστικό πλαίσιο των ποιημάτων, διαμορφώνοντας ένα μεγάλο ηρωικό υπόβαθρο για τη σύγχρονη αθλητική νίκη και κατοχυρώνοντας μία άμεση και σημαντική σύνδεση μεταξύ του παρελθόντος και του παρόντος. Αν και σίγουρα έγκυρη, αυτή η ερμηνεία τείνει να ελαχιστοποιήσει την πολυπλοκότητα συγκεκριμένων γεωγραφικών κινήσεων στο πλαίσιο κάθε διήγησης και τις διαφορές στα γεωγραφικά πρότυπα που δημιουργούνται από διαφορετικές ωδές. Ακόμη πιο πέρα, θεωρούμε ότι οι γραμμές ανάμεσα στα μυθολογικά διηγήματα και τις αναφορές στο «εδώ και τώρα» της επινίκιας παράστασης και της περίστασής της είναι περισσότερο ασαφείς από ότι έχει αναγνωριστεί ως τώρα. Η «αληθινή» γεωγραφία η οποία συνδέει τις τοποθεσίες της νίκης με τις πατρίδες των νικητών είναι ένα διαχρονικό ανάλογο της «μυθικής» γεωγραφίας που συνδέει απομακρυσμένα γεγονότα και ήρωες με την τοπική παράσταση. Οι γεωγραφικές διαστάσεις των επινίκιων ωδών έχουν παραδόξως μελετηθεί λιγότερο του αναμενομένου κι αυτό ως ένα ποσοστό οφείλεται στο ότι διαφορετικά είδη τοπικώνγεωγραφικών αναφορών έχουν στο μεγαλύτερο ποσοστό τους μελετηθεί ξεχωριστά από τους μελετητές. Το προτεινόμενο πρόγραμμα-μεταδιδακτορική διατριβή έχει ως σημείο εκκίνησης αυτές τις μελέτες περίπτωσης κι ασχολείται με την ανάπτυξη μιας κατανοητής μεθοδολογίας για την έρευνα γεωγραφικών και τοπικών ποιητικών εκφράσεων στο σωζόμενο σώμα επινίκιων ωδών. Η έρευνα που περιλαμβάνεται στο παρόν έργο περιλαμβάνει εκ φύσεως διαφορετικές επιστήμες κι αρχές καθώς αναζητά να ενοποιήσει όλες τις σχετικές πολιτιστικές πληροφορίες (φιλολογικές, μυθολογικές, ιστορικές και αρχαιολογικές) για να κατανοηθούν χώροι που (ξανα)δημιουργούνται στις κι από τις ωδές. Η συνεργασία με το Ίδρυμα Μείζονος Ελληνισμού (ΙΜΕ) σε αυτή την προσπάθεια θα είναι εξαιρετικά παραγωγική καθώς κι αμοιβαία ευεργετική εξαιτίας των απεριόριστων σημείων επαφής μεταξύ των στόχων του έργου και των σύγχρονων και μελλοντικών δράσεων που πραγματοποιούνται από το Ίδρυμα. 4. English Content 4.1. Project Description This project investigates ancient Greek lyric poetry, and in particular the epinician odes of Pindar and Bacchylides, in their historical, social, and most importantly, geographical context. The odes were composed to commemorate major Panhellenic athletic victories of individuals hailing from various towns and regions of Greece, including the Greek colonies in the south of Italy (Magna Graeca). These two locations - the site of the victory and the site of victor s hometown - form the spatial backbone of every epinician ode, and their prominent inclusion in the poetic texts has traditionally been viewed as one of the required elements in the poet s encomiastic program (Bundy, E. L. 1962. Studia Pindarica. Berkeley). This explanation, however, does not fully account for the iterative references to the two locales, usually at the beginning and the end of the odes, and the persistent shifting of the attention between the two. Moreover, these are by no means the only kinds of spatial designations traced by the victory odes: various mythical narratives are routinely developed or alluded to, extending further the poetic geographical horizons by following foundation accounts, developing genealogies, or cataloguing heroic accomplishments. The inclusion of the mythical subject matter has similarly been understood within the encomiastic framework of the poems, as forming a grand heroic backdrop for the contemporary athletic victory and establishing an immediate and meaningful connection between past and present. While certainly valid, this interpretation tends to minimize the complexities of the particular geographical movements within any given narrative and consequently the differences in the spatial patterns created by different odes. Furthermore, I believe that the lines between mythical narratives and the references to the here and now of the epinician performance and its occasion are more ambiguous than has been recognized so far. The real geography that connects the sites of victory with victors hometowns is a diachronic analogue of the mythical geography that connects distant events and heroes to the local performance. Geographical dimensions of the victory odes have been surprisingly understudied, in part because different kinds of spatial references have been treated for the most part separately by scholars. The proposed project takes its starting point from such case studies and is concerned with developing a comprehensive methodology for the investigation of geographical and spatial Project Website 1.0 12

poetic expressions in the extant epinician corpus. The research involved is inherently interdisciplinary as it seeks to integrate all relevant cultural information (literary, mythological, historical, and archaeological) for understanding the spaces (re)created in and by the odes. The cooperation with the Foundation of the Hellenic World (FHW) in this undertaking would be especially productive as well as mutually beneficial because of the numerous points of contact between the goals of the project and the current and future operations conducted by FHW. 4.2. Project Structure The project is organized in 5 components of work, as follows: 4.2.1. Comprehensive Literature Review The objective of a comprehensive literature review is to assess in full the current state of scholarship on spatial references in ancient Greek epinician poetry. The review will create a typology for investigating various aspects of place and space in the corpus by taking into account all the studies that include analysis of geography, landscape, and spatial designations in the odes. 4.2.2. Investigation of Geographical Locations Referenced in Victory Odes: Sites of the Athletic Competitions The objective of this component is to integrate all relevant cultural information (literary, historical, but, most importantly, topographical and archaeological) for understanding the Athletic Competitions spaces-sites (re)created in and by the odes. A project involving space and geography cannot be adequately undertaken without a first-hand experience of the geophysical features of the regions in question and of the sites of uncovered architectural remains. 4.2.3. Investigation of Geographical Locations Referenced in Victory Odes: Sites of Victors Hometowns Based on the template and questions of the general description and of the previous component, the objective of this particular component is to integrate all relevant cultural information (literary, historical, but, most importantly, topographical and archaeological) for Project Website 1.0 13

understanding the victor s hometowns spaces-sites (re)created in and by the odes. What needs to be underlined is that a project involving space and geography cannot be adequately undertaken without a first-hand experience of the geophysical features of the regions in question and of the sites of uncovered architectural remains. Consequently, most of the activities in this component will consist of visits to publicly open sites of archaeological investigations and their accompanying museums, as well as the regions which feature prominently in the epinician corpus. The tasks involved in this as well as the previous component are designed to support the implementation of the next-core component of this research. 4.2.4. Development and implementation of a Methodology for analyzing victory odes as maps The work that has to be done in this component is essential for completing the post-doc research. Based on the comprehensive literature review as well as the visits-investigation to the sites, both athletic competition sites and victors hometowns, we will develop and implement the methodology that will enable us to analyse the epinician odes as maps and answer to questions connected to previous components and this research in general. 4.2.5. Dissemination activities The objective of this component is to disseminate information regarding the project and its research results (intermediate and final). The successful implementation of this component will guarantee a wide impact of the research results achieved in the scope of this project, by allowing the information to be propagated to those communities and individuals who may benefit the most from it, or whose work may be impacted the most. 4.3. People MASA CULUMOVIC (Postdoctoral Researcher) Dr. Masa Culumovic holds a BA in Classics from the University of Pennsylvania (1999) and a PhD in Classical Philology from Harvard University (2009). Her special interests include ancient Greek poetry and drama. She has taught at Harvard University, Furman University, University of Puget Sound and Miami University. She is currently a post-doctoral fellow with the Foundation of the Hellenic World. Her research project analyzes the poetics of space in the Project Website 1.0 14

epinician odes of Pindar and Bacchylides. KLEOPATRA FERLA (Scientific Supervisor) Dr. Kleopatra Ferla holds a PhD of Ancient History from the University of Freiburg, Germany (1995). In the past she has taught at the University of Freiburg. Since 1996 she has been with the Foundation of the Hellenic World, with a leading role in the design and implementation of its culture and history oriented RTD projects. Funding The project THE POETICS OF SPACE IN ANCIENT GREEK VICTORY ODES is implemented within the framework of the Action «Supporting Postdoctoral Researchers» of the Operational Program "Education and Lifelong Learning" (Action s Beneficiary: General Secretariat for Research and Technology), and is co-financed by the European Social Fund (ESF) and the Greek State. The project s budget is 150.000 and its duration is 36 months. The aim of Action Supporting Postdoctoral Researchers is to facilitate the acquirement of new research skills by Postdoctoral Researchers (PR) that will promote their career development in any field and/or help them restart their careers after a leave of absence.
