Dennis Strouzas Ἦχος πλ. δ /Plagal of the 4th Tone ~ Ἑωθινόν ΣΤ /6thMorning Gospel October 13, 2019 ~ Holy Fathers of the 7th Ecumenical Council Last weeks bulletin, introduced the major prayer books of the church that guide the Orthodox Christian into a certain rhythm of prayer. The Horologion will be the focus for this Sunday. As was stated last week, the Horologion means, the book of hours. Throughout the twenty four hour cycle of the day, there are moments when the Christian is called to prayer. The fullness of this prayer cycle may be witnessed in the monastery. There are however specific prayers of each scheduled hour of prayer that anyone may adapt to their daily life. The major scheduled prayers in the Horologion are the following. First, there are the prayers when one wakes up in the morning. At the center of all the scheduled services is of course the saying of the Trisagion Prayer, which begins with Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal.and concludes with the Lord s prayer. There is the Midnight Service, with Psalm 118 being read, which is the longest psalm in the Psalter. How many people suffer from sleepless nights? One option instead of turning on the TV is to read parts or the whole Midnight Service. A major theme of the Midnight Service is vigilance. Christ resurrected in the midst of the night and one know not when Christ will appear again. The Service of the Matins is the morning service of the church. On Sunday, the Matins are chanted prior to the beginning of the Divine Liturgy. There are many intricate parts with deep spiritual and liturgical meanings to the Matins. Another portion of the Horologion are the prayers dedicated to the 1st, 3rd, 6th & 9th Hours. The theme of the first hour is light as reflected in the ending prayer of the First Hour, O Christ, the True Light.. The First Hour is comparable to about six o clock in the morning. The Third Hour prayer is dedicated to when the Holy Spirit came down upon the Apostles during Pentecot. In the Book of Acts this event is described. For these are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. The Sixth Hour prayers (12pm) are dedicated to when the Lord was crucified and the skies became dark. This is described in the Gospel of Matthew. Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land. The Ninth Hour is usually attached to the service of the Vespers. It is considered the last prayer of the day and theme around the Ninth Hour prayer is Jesus giving up His spirit. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is, My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me? (Matthew 27:46) The service of Vespers marks the new day and is chanted usually in the early evening. After the vespers service there is the Small and Great Compline, which are prayers read after the evening meal. Along with the services that are dedicated to certain time periods of the day. The Horologion has special services dedicated to Jesus and to the Mother of God. From this beautiful book springs forth a plethora of spiritual tradition, teachings and prayers. The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to Titus 3:8-15 Titus, my son, the saying is sure. I desire you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to apply themselves to good deeds; these are excellent and profitable to men. But avoid stupid controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels over the law, for they are unprofitable and futile. As for a man who is factious, after admonishing him once or twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a person is perverted and sinful; he is self-condemned. When I send Artemas or Tychicos to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there. Do your best to speed Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way; see that they lack nothing. And let our people learn to apply themselves to good deeds, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not to be unfruitful. All who are with me send greeting to you. Greet those who love us in the faith. Grace be with you all. Amen. The Reading is the Gospel According to St. Luke 8:5-15 The Lord said this parable: "A sower went out to sow his seed; and as he sowed, some fell along the path, and was trodden under foot, and the birds of the air devoured it. And some fell on the rock; and as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns grew with it and choked it. And some fell into good soil and grew, and yielded a hundredfold." And when his disciples asked him what this parable meant, he said, "To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God; but for others they are in parables, so that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand. Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, that they may not believe and be saved. And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy; but these have no root, they believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away. And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature. And as for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bring forth fruit with patience." As he said these things, he cried out "He who has ears to hear, let him hear."
