Acropolis Museum: Athens diamond In the historic Makriyianni area, 300 meters far from the Acropolis, the new museum highlights the findings of its hill in the best possible way and makes us proud of our cultural heritage. Those of you who have not visited it yet, don t delay to enjoy this unforgettable experience.
The architecture The museum was designed by architect Bernard Tschumi in association with architect Michalis Fotiadis and was inaugurated in the summer of 2009. Its architectural form intended to ensure visual contact with the surrounding monuments of the Acropolis, full display of the architectural sculptures of the Parthenon and adaptation of the building to the archaeological excavation at its base. The visual contact was achieved thanks to glass facades that provide a greater view to the historic hills. As for the museum s base, it was made of glass too, giving a floating sense it stands on more than 100 pillars and creating an impressive shelter for the archaeological excavation. The result was even better than originally planned. / Part of Block VI of the Parthenon s eastern frieze. Gods Poseidon, Apollo, Artemis and Aphrodite. Στο ανατολικό και νότιο τμήμα, στην Αίθουσα των Αρχαϊκών Έργων (480-79 π.χ.), The collections The sections of the museum are deployed on three levels. On the ground floor, the Gallery of the Slopes of the Acropolis accommodates findings from the sanctuaries and settlements that existed on the slopes of the Acropolis during all the historic periods. In the antiquity, these slopes constituted the transition zone between the city and its most famous sanctuary. This was the area where official and public worship, and small and bigger sanctuaries coexisted with private houses. The glass floor allows the view to the archaeological excavation, whereas its ascending inclination alludes to the ascent to the Acropolis. 19
Almost the entire history of the Acropolis is unfolded on the first floor. The impressive sculptures that decorated the first big temples of the Acropolis, as well as the offerings of the faithful, such as the Korai (young women), the horse riders, the scribes, the statues of Goddess Athena, the small bronze and clay offerings, all have found their place in the east and south part, the Archaic Gallery (480/79 B.C.). The exhibition program reaches its peak on the third level, in the Parthenon Gallery. The sculptured blocks of the frieze depicting the Panathenaic Procession are successively installed for the first time around its external walls. The integration of the Parthenon frieze into the rectangular cement core of the Museum, which has the exact dimensions with Parthenon s cella, the placement of the metopes between the columns, the development of the forms of the temple s two pediments and the union of the original sculptures with their copies, gives for the first time the opportunity to enjoy the Parthenon s entire sculptural decoration and to understand the scenes depicted on it. The tour ends with a video presentation. 1. Όψη της Αρχαϊκής Αίθουσας./ View of the Archaic Gallery. 2. After the Parthenon Gallery we get back on the first level, at the Propylaia, the Temple of Athena Nike and the Erechtheion. Prominent sculptures of the classical period, copies of the imperial years, bas-reliefs of the 5th and 4th centuries B.C. and select artifacts from the end of antiquity and the beginning of the Byzantine period are exposed there. 20
Coffee and souvenirs On the second level there is a modern restaurant with panoramic view to the historic area, as well as a gift shop with souvenirs, gifts, jewelry, handy items and books. Let s meet at the Museum s ground floor café with the glass floor where we can see the remains of the ancient Athenian quarter that were revealed in the museum s construction area, where we will soon have the opportunity to wander You will need a minimum of two hours and women should avoid wearing skirts for obvious reasons. 3 4 3.
