The MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF THE HOLY TAXIARHAI AND SAINT HARALAMBOS GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH 7373 CALDWELL AVENUE, NILES, ILLINOIS 60714 PHONE (847) 647-8880 Where there is no vision, the people perish. (Proverbs 29:18) THE NEW YEAR 2010 STEWARDSHIP AND TITHING IN 2010 Information about Stewardship and Tithing has been mailed out, and we are all called to Fight the Good Fight of the Faith, just as David did when he faced Goliath. Good Stewardship is a part of our fight for our salvation! We are called to become holy that we might receive God s blessings; as we receive these blessing we are also called to act in a way that is fitting. Let us be thankful to Him, and let us become not only worthy receivers but worthy givers!

Redwood Drive 2010 STEWARDSHIP & TITHING FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT OF THE FAITH As of January 7, 2010 78 stewards have committed $54,904.00 Let us become WORTHY GIVERS! SACRAMENTS AND BLESSINGS BLESSINGS OF INFANTS Forty days after birth, a child and its mother come to church to receive a 40 Day Blessing, imitating Christ who was presented in the Temple 40 days after He was born. Please call the church office to arrange this blessing. BAPTISMS Please call the church office to schedule Baptisms. Plan ahead! there are some days when Baptisms are not performed. Keep in mind that there should be only one Godparent and that a child is supposed to be given but one name when he or she is baptized. WEDDINGS Please arrange an appointment with Fr. Dean at least eight months before the proposed wedding date to allow time for all necessary marriage preparation. CONFESSION Confessions are arranged by appointment. Please call the church office to schedule Confession. MINISTRY TO PERSONS WHO ARE SICK Orthodox Christians who would like to receive Holy Sacraments but are unable to attend church (hospitalized or at home) should contact the church office so Holy Sacraments can be administered to them. Please inform the church office if your loved one is hospitalized! Most hospitals no longer inform us when they receive patients from our parish. MEMORIAL SERVICES Memorial Services are offered for the eternal rest of persons who have fallen asleep in the Lord. Customarily, these services are offered at 40 days, at 6 months, at 1 year and at 3 years. When three years have passed, the departed are more properly remembered on the Saturdays of the Souls. DID YOU KNOW?.....About Saturday nights: Saturday night is the time of preparation for the Lord s Day (Sunday) and for the Divine Liturgy. It should be a quiet time of prayer and contemplation, a time to offer incense in our homes. Did you know that the day begins with the setting of the sun? That is why the vespers of our holidays falls the evening before the holiday: the holiday has already begun! For this reason, Orthodox Christians avoid planning parties and dinner dances on Saturday evenings. 2

HOLY TAXIARHAI AND SAINT HARALAMBOS GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH 7373 CALDWELL AVENUE, NILES, ILLINOIS 60714 PHONE: 847/647-8880 From Father Dean Dear Stewards and Friends of St. Haralambos, The New Year 2010 The New Year has begun with a BANG! We have celebrated Epiphany and cut our Vasilopita, and soon we will have our annual Godparents Day Luncheon and also honor the Three Hierarchs. We thank our Philoptochos for the Vasilopita Luncheon, and our Afternoon PTA for making a lot of Vasilopites (!) for all our schools, and also for a delicious Godparents Day Luncheon! We honor our patron Saint Haralambos on February 10, and hope everyone will celebrate his memory with us at Great Vespers on the 9th and at the Divine Liturgy on the 10th! We are not planning a Dinner Dance this year, but watch for an exciting announcement as we plan something different and hope everyone will participate! The TRIODION begins very early this year: January 24th. (PASCHA will be April 4!) It is the official beginning of the pre-lenten season, and it signals our annual Tsiknopempti Dinner which our Philoptochos ladies will host on Thursday, February 4, and our annual Apokreatiko Glendi, which our PTA will host on Sunday, February 7. During the first weeks of Triodion, according to our Orthodox Christian tradition, we ease into Great Lent gradually. There is no fasting permitted in the first week of Triodion (January 24-31). The second week (Feb 1-7), we are to fast on Wednesday and Friday; the other days we are permitted all foods, but Sunday, February 7 is Meat-Fare (Απόκρεας) Sunday the last day of eating meat until Pascha. The week of February 8-14 is Cheese-Fare week, and all manners of milk and cheese products are prescribed every day, with February 14 as Cheese-Fare Sunday, or the day we say good-bye to dairy products. The next day is Pure Monday (Καθαρά Δευτέρα), the first day of the Great Fast. The Sunday of Orthodoxy Pan-Orthodox Vespers will take place on Sunday, February 22 at the Holy Resurrection Serbian Orthodox Cathedral in Chicago. This is always a beautiful and moving service mark your calendar so you can be there! Sometimes, we complain that we have too much to do, but we should count our blessings and be grateful; there are so many people who do not have much reason to celebrate. Let us seize every opportunity with fervor and enthusiasm, and thanks to God! We are beginning our second year with our new look monthly bulletin. We hope you like it! We are pleased to have St. George Publishing as our new Visions publisher, and we are grateful for our advertisers who make this all possible. COMMUNITY NEWS AND ACTIVITIES 2010 STEWARDSHIP & TITHING: FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT FOR OUR FAITH By now, you should have received information about our 2010 Stewardship! DID YOU KNOW that, in Old Testament times, the people gave 10% of their income (known as a tithe ) for their support of the synagogue? Sincere Stewardship is part of our struggle for salvation, just as David faced Goliath! Our salvation is priceless, and calls for conscientious and sacrifical giving in proportion to our income! As we receive God s bountiful blessings, we should also be worthy givers. Let us think about our support of our Church in an entirely new way! Stewardship is our most important source of support for our Church and its programs; can we count on your conscientious support? GODPARENTS SUNDAY-Our Godparents Sunday will be observed on January 24th this year! Godparent Sunday gives us the opportunity to renew the relationship between Godparents and their Godchildren by receiving Holy Communion together and attending our Godparents Luncheon. This is a popular event every year, and reservations are required! Please call the church office to make your reservations, and plan to participate in our Godparents Sunday! SANCTITY OF LIFE PRAYER SERVICE Plan to attend the Pan-Orthodox Sanctity of Life Prayer Service at 6:00 pm on January 24 and hear our guest, the well-known author and speaker Frederika Matthews-Green. The Service will take place at St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church in Cicero, IL and all are welcomed! SATURDAYS OF THE SOULS--The Saturdays February 6, February 13 and February 20 are called Saturdays of the Souls. As we prepare for the glorious celebration of Pascha, the Orthodox Church takes the opportunity on those days to remember those who have fallen asleep in the Lord, anticipating their and our general Resurrection in His Kingdom! It is a great blessing that our Faith understands the importance of remembering our deceased parents, relatives, teachers and friends. Plan to participate in this observation! PHILOPTOCHOS NEWS--We congratulate our Philoptochos Ladies for a delicious and successful Vasilopita Luncheon on January 10th! The ladies are now preparing for Tsiknopempti (Feb 4), and the annual Lenten Dinner ("Koulouma") which will take place on February 15! TSIKNOPEMPTI DINNER Plan to join us on Thursday, February 4 known as Tsiknopempti for a delicious dinner hosted by our Philoptochos Ladies. According to our Greek Orthodox tradition, this is the last weekday on which meat is served before Great Lent begins, and it is festive occasion. Please call the church office to make reservations! The donation is $25 per person. APOKREATIKO GLENDI Meat-Fare Sunday will be on February 7, and our PTA invites you to our annual Apokreatiko Glendi. This is a family event marking the last day of eating meat until PASCHA, and the PTA is planning a wonderful evening! The donation is only $15 for adults, and 10 for children under 12 years old. There will be delicious food and music, and everyone is encouraged to wear costumes! Please call the church office for reservations! AGRYPNIA Plan to come to St. Haralambos for an evening of prayer on Monday, February 8, beginning at 7:00 pm, as we prepare to celebrate the memory of our patron St. Haralambos. There will be an evening vigil with Vespers, Orthos and Divine Liturgy, as we pray for our friends and families and for ourselves. 5
