2 Timothy A Formal-Inductive Equivalence Translation I have always wanted to learn Koine Greek and translate the Bible from the existent manuscripts and/or printed versions available. I have always been unsettled about the opinions and biases that seem to inevitably creep into the modern English translations we have today. There seems to be no translation that is immune to this infection, and so I set out as an Independent Study project to translate one of the New Testament letters from the Greek. This paper documents my progress and results. Initially, I collected my sources, systems and data texts that I would need for this translation. I first selected Stephanos' version of the Textus Receptus 1550 for the Greek version of 2 Timothy. This was procured in digitized format, so it was easily adapted to my needs. Next, I selected a base text to refer to during translation. This was the Apostolic Bible Polyglot, an interlinear bible produced by Charles VanderPool. I had available both a digital (PDF) copy and a print edition. I also needed a means of creating vocabulary lists that were pulled directly from the text itself. I accomplished this by running the Stephanos 1550 copy through TextSTAT, a word frequency list creator. This produced a vocabulary list based on frequency of use, that came in very handy while learning Greek words and meanings. I also created a vocabulary list that comprised the most frequent Greek words in the entire New Testament. Once I had working vocabulary lists in Excel format, I inputed that data into the Teacher 2000 software. This program generated a flashcard type testing system that randomly sorts through and presents each Greek word, requiring me to type the correct English equivalent. I then reformatted the Stephanos 1550 text of 2 Timothy so that I could more easily translate each Greek word. I created two files with this, an Initial Translation Exam and a Final Translation Exam. These would be used to gauge my overall progress from the beginning of class to the end of class. With all of my source and data materials collected, I designed a study schedule that would take me through the

translation of 2 Timothy and an overall increase of vocabulary retention. I did this through a series of daily vocabulary quizzes in the Teacher 2000 software and by completing a word for word formal translation of the text. I would translate a portion of the text each day, drill on over 400 word instances and complete copywork on the NT word frequency list. Upon the completion of my 2 Timothy translation, I took the Final Translation Exam and scored 8 percentage points higher than on my initial Exam. I have included in this document my Initial and Final Exams, my 2 Timothy Word Frequency Vocabulary List, my 2 Timothy Interlinear and the final English Translation of 2 Timothy. This is a very formal equivalence and has not been corrected for readability yet. Overall, the process provided a great deal of insight into the text itself and a broad overview of the Greek language. After this project, reading a modern version of 2 Timothy now reveals a great deal of interpretation used by the translators. For myself, it is fascinating to see the fingerprints of man's hands all over the text, and yet, God still preserves its infallibility.
