Department of Life Sciences, Yunnan Normal University, Kunming 650092,China) Abtract : Two varieties of maize ( Zea m ays L.,cultivars Dahuang and Qing No. 3) were used in the study. The results showed that a heat shock ( HS) treatment significantly increased the survival percentage of two variety seedlings at heat st ress, confirming heat2shock increased heat tolerance of maize seedlings. More2 over,t he maize seedlings t hrough heat pret reat ment, retained relativelyhigher activity of glutat hine reductase ( GR, EC 1. 6. 4. 2 ) than the seedlings without heat2shock pretreatment. In the profiles glutathine reductase isozyme in the seedlings after heat2shock2pretreatment appeared a new band as compared with the seedlings wit hout heat2shock pret reat ment. Changes in isozyme profiles of GR had been different during heat st ress. These indicated t hat higher activity of GR and changes in isozyme profiles of GR were related to heat tolerance of maize seedlings. Key words : heat shock ; maize seedling ;glutat hine reductase ;glutat hine reductase isozyme
