St Euphemia High School Newsletter February 2016 WELCOME BACK We wish all the families of St Euphemia College a happy new year! We extend a heartfelt welcome to all the new families and teachers joining our School. We hope they all settle into school life as we look forward to an enriching year for all. The staff and parents of the College work together to provide a positive and supportive environment for the students. On the first day of school, students were welcomed by the Principal who inspired the students by encouraging them to achieve their personal best. Mr Hirakis explained the significance of the school motto strive for excellence to mean working to the best of your ability in all areas of school life such as socially, academically, personally as well as in sport. Students also attended a church service where they were blessed, ready to begin the new school year with enthusiasm and a positive attitude. This was particularly evident in the Year 7 students who began high school. St Euphemia Newsletter 3

ACADEMIC FOCUS The Year 12 class of 2015 is to be congratulated for its diligent academic efforts that have resulted in outstanding results. Their results reflect the College s motto to strive for excellence as both students and staff worked together so that each student achieved his/her personal best. Seven students achieved an ATAR above 90. Many students achieved Bands 5 and 6 in numerous HSC subjects. Congratulations to all the students for their meritorious achievements! WIDE READING PROGRAM Reading is an integral element of the English program at St Euphemia College. Research supports that when students read at home, success follows in all subject areas. The Wide Reading Program has been developed to encourage reading for enjoyment as well as to enhance students writing and reading skills not only in English but all subject areas. Could all parents please encourage and ensure that their children participate in this worthwhile program that will ensure future academic success. Students will bring home a recommended reading list and forms to be completed by parents. Students may select books from a variety of literary genres. Some books are in the suggested list, however, more books are available on the Premier s Reading Challenge List. Students can also select books from any library. Many books can be read throughout the year and over the school holidays. At the final assembly at the end of the year, students who have read widely will receive a special prize and/or award depending on the amount of books read. Throughout the year, students are to submit to their English teacher a journal (approx one A4 page) for every book that they read. The details of the journal are in the note given to students. Yours Sincerely Ms Zarkos English Coordinator St Euphemia Newsletter 6
