DESIGNTECH NOMINATIONS DesignTECH is an exhibition of outstanding Major Design projects from Higher School Certificate Design and Technology students. It is with great pleasure that we congratulate Christina Georgiou, Katherine Kopsaris and Angelique Souris, for being nominated for the DesignTech Exhibition at the Powerhouse Museum, for their HSC Major Design Projects. In Design & Technology this year, the students were required to design and produce a creative and innovative product and submit a portfolio documenting their Major Design Project process. Christina designed an incredible wearable art piece made from recycled and reused products, such as 2000 red paint swatches found at Reverse Garbage. Christina wanted her Major Design Project to raise awareness of heart disease, the number one killer of Australian women. Katherine designed three beautiful bridal headpieces for three of Australia s largest religions. She incorporated various beading, sewing and embroidery techniques, to design and create these unique pieces. From this experience, Katherine has decided to pursue a career in teaching Design and Technology! Angelique created three innovative wall art light pieces that were made using pandanus leaves, a native tree found in Northern Australia. She employed traditional Indigenous weaving techniques to create them. We wish the girls the very best for their future endeavours, whether it is pursuing a career in design or any other area of interest. Ms McCormack and Ms Zeidan
YEAR 12 RETREAT On 5 November, Year 12 spent six days on a spiritual retreat that helped strengthen friendships and bonds. After enduring a torturous 12 hour train ride, we soaked up the strong Queensland sun rays with our sunscreen and tanning oil and experienced the powerful waves of Surfers Paradise. On the second day, 'Wet n Wild' was fun and enjoyable as we witnessed our friends' faces when they got splashed by water or when there was a deep drop on a slide. We don't think we have ever enjoyed being in water as much as we did in this theme park. In the evenings, Ms Omeros had planned bonding activities such as the 'One hour of friendship'. During this hour, we created new friendships. As a result, we have become a lot closer to one another. By our third evening together, we consolidated our trust, acceptance and understanding of each other. We all encouraged one another to face our fears at 'Dreamworld,' especially on the 120m high 'Giant drop' ride. At Movie World, most of us were able to meet our childhood idols, such as Batman, Cat Woman, the Scooby doo crew, as well as Austin Powers. On our last evening at Tambourine Mountain, we all dressed up for a fun night of loud dance music and dancing in outrageous costumes. Most importantly, we attended a morning church service at the Greek Orthodox Church of St Anna for St Nectarios feast day. We were welcomed warmly by Father Romanos Stergiou and the president of the community. After receiving Holy Communion and speaking with father Romanos, we were blessed to receive morning tea which we all appreciated. Year 12 has forged strong friendships with the whole year group and we are certainly more grateful for the things we are blessed with in our life. On behalf of Year 12, I'd like to thank the teachers for giving up their time so that we were able to have such a memorable week. Most importantly, we thank Ms. Omeros for being an amazing and supportive Year Coordinator and allowing for our spiritual retreat to happen. Shella Giman
MUSICAL AND ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Michael Vamiadakis of Year 10 is an outstanding student of the College who not only excels academically, but is also a very talented musician. Michael was successful in gaining a place at Newtown Performing Arts School in 2013. After a lengthy process of an interview, auditions and a music theory test, Michael performed a musical item on piano, that so impressed the panel of judges, he was offered a place in Year 11. Michael initially accepted the position, yet after much deliberation, chose to remain at St Euphemia College for Years 11 and 12. Michael explained I decided to continue my education at the College, as I would have to become familiar with a new environment and I would've spent more time adjusting than preparing for my HSC. Another reason that influenced me was the quality education that I have been receiving at St Euphemia College, especially the support of teachers both academically and in co curricular activities. We congratulate Michael on his accomplishments and wish him the best of luck in both his academic and musical pursuits in the senior years of High School.
