Extended Short Catalogue of Codex Sinaiticus described according to the quire structure Descriptive Parameters Codex type Codex Sinaiticus is an early Byzantine Pandect Bible, including Greek OT and NT corpora (incomplete). It was written in the 1st half of the 4th century, in the same period as the contemporary codex Vaticanus 1209. The central aim of the codex was to integrate all available bible books, of both the Greek OT and NT, which were in use in liturgical practice, and to provide a model codex for further transmission in Byzantine Orthodox churches and monasteries. Unity of the original codex It is stated by the conservators of the British Library that Codex Sinaiticus was originally a codicological unity. The clear conclusion is based on the quire construction of the codex, binding features and other codicological details. Despite this opinion of Milne and Skeat, the part of the codex kept in London (the main body of the remnant portions) was divided up and rebound in two separate volumes, kept together in a box. Dislocated repositories In an earlier stage of its history, perhaps when codex Sinaiticus was still kept in the Monastery of St Catherine, the covers disappeared and the construction was weakened, resulting in the fact that the unity of the codex was broken and the manuscript was divided up into several parts and fragments. These separate parts were discovered and brought to Leipzig, St. Petersburg and later London. Finally, interestingly enough, some fragments also remained in the Monastery itself and were discovered there during new founds. The divided portions of codex Sinaiticus came to lie in different places (see Bibliography). - in London, British Library - in Leipzig, Universitäts-bibliothek - in St Petersburg, Russian State Library - in Sinai, Monastery of St. Catherine The various portions were entered into the different library systems, receiving local signatures and were described in the collection catalogues as seperate items (the Leipzig portion by Gardhausen, the London portion by S. McKendrick and T. Pattie, the St. Petersburg fragments by Granstrem and others, the fragments of the new finds by Nikolopoulos). Tischendorf started to integrate separated pieces, Rahlfs presented an integrated picture in his Verzeichnis, the Lakes also included the available portions of OT and NT in their photographic facsimile and finally the Sinaitus Digital Project provided the new fragments in (reconstructed) context. Codex format The codex Sinaiticus has a large format and measures in its present-day state of preservation: 38 cm in height and 34.5 cm in width. The spine breadth is not known for reason of the fragmented state of the codex and the considerable losses (especially the large first part of the codex and at the end). Certainly it was a thick volume, comparable with the codex Vaticanus 1209. Parchment sheets needed With the help of remaining quire numbers it is possible to determine the total number of parchment sheets which were used to produce the whole Sinai Bible codex. Originally 95 quires of 4 sheets per quire were used for the construction of the codex, that is 95 4 = roughly 380 sheets manufactured from the skins of sheep and goats. However, not all quires comprise 4 sheets, see Diagram 1, Table of Concordance, 24 folios or 12 sheets were not used or cut out later (the lost quires and quire 73 are included in the account). The dimensions of each skin were roughly 45 70 cm before they were cut into the requested format of the sheets. For the whole OT part were 72 quires used (34 + 7 are lost), and for the whole NT 22 quires (quires 93-95 included Barnabas, the Shepherd of Hermas). Quire structure and foliation There are two ancient series of quire numbers preserved in codex Sinaiticus. One original series is only partially preserved (from quire 35 - Leipzig part - onwards, in the left top corner of the first folios of the quaternions). Another series, most probably added later (for rebinding purposes?), was written in the right top corner of the first folios of the quires. The later quire numbers (8th or 9th century) are used for the description of the codex below. The first preserved quire number (second type) is found in the Leipzig portion, ΛЄ (35) and the last quire number (London portion) is ϞΔ (94). This means that a large part of the codex (quires 1-34, and 50-56) are lost save some single folios and fragments), and that the last part has also disappeared (maybe quires 93, 95?). For Tischendorf's foliation of the Leipzig portion, see his separate edition and the Leipzig Katalogos of Gardthausen. Tischendorf's foliation of the main body of the codex is divided over 3 volumes (II-III Veteris Testamenti pars prior and pars posterior, IV Novum Testamentum cum Barnaba et Pastore). A new foliation starts in each volume. The foliation by the Lakes is divided over two volumes (NT and OT). The continuous foliation of the British Library is of the main corpus (see Summary Catalogue). Blank folio-pages, columns, lines Blank pages are used by the kalligraphos to indicate larger structures and divisions (see Milne/Skeat, p. 72 'Make-up of quires'). Some folios have been cut out of the manuscript for economic reasons (to be used for new writings). When a book is finished the rest of the column is left blank, and the new writing starts at the top (first line) of a new column. These elements of codex design are used for the Extended Short Catalogue description below. Titles of included writings Included in the codex are three types of titles, which are used together in all included writings: - titles placed in the upper margins at the head of books or epistles (epigraphe ). - running titles placed in the upper margins throughout the books or epistles. - titles placed inside columns at the end of books and epistles (hypographe ). The titles indicate the content of the work in the shortest possible form and moreover its exact extent, as the title is given at the beginning as well as at the end of the writing. Titles are used as descriptive parameters in CBM's Extended Short Catalogues.

Folio-page design The folio-page design is characterised by two types: - a four-column folio design is found in the remaining portions of the OT part and in all writings of the NT part. - a two-column folio design is found in the Psalter and sections of the OT Wisdom book. The four columns (per folio page) are written in small successive lines, 48 lines per column, and the writing spaces of the columns show by half open lines and extended first letters indicating new sense units (paragraphs). The open codex shows eight columns (4 columns left page and 4 columns right page), providing a broad overview for the reader. The two columns (per folio page) are written in somewhat larger successive lines, also 48 lines per column, and are phrased by one first large line (stichos), and following with new lines and indented verses as far as in needed for the completion of the clause. Columns and margins belong together and determine the folio page design. The upper margins were used for titles of the books, running titles, and the quire numbers. The lower margins are larger than the upper margins and the inner margins are smaller than the outer margins. The margins on the left of the columns were used in some books for numbers, the Psalm numbers for instance, and the Ammonian-Eusebian kephalaia and canon numbers in the Gospel books. Reconstruction of codex remains The reconstruction of the codex Sinaiticus' original and full contents, which was set up by Milne/Skeat and elaborated by other scholars, is convincing and of great help to understand the basic construction of the "pandect bible" codex type. Their methodology was the analysis of the quire structure of the whole codex, making exact inventories of the missing contents (esp. of the Octateuch and Kings I-IV, and the Prophets Ezechiel, Daniel and some minor Prophets), and comparing these codex units with the analogous sections in the Vaticanus and Alexandrinus. In the Codex Sinaiticus Project these conjectures concerning the contents of the whole codex were not taken into consideration in the online edition. The reconstruction was limited to the remaining portions only.
