First Sunday Evening in Great Lent Monday of the Second Week 1 Κυριακή Α τῶν Νηστειῶν Τῆ Δευτέρα τῆς Β Ἐβδοµάδος March 5, 2017 5η Μαρτίου 2017 At Great Vespers The Proemial Psalm. Great Litany. At the Kyrie Ekekraksa Compunctionate Stichera of the Tone Εἰς τὸν Μεγἀλον Ἐσπερινόν Ὁ Προοιµιακός. α Bring my soul out of prison that I may confess Your name. I want to wash away the record of my sins with tears, O Lord, and to please You through the rest of my life through repentance. But the enemy deceives me and fights for my soul. Before I utterly perish, save me, O Lord. β The righteous shall wait patiently for me until You reward me. If a man takes refuge in this harbor from the tempest, will he not be saved? If he kneels before this house of healing in his agony, will he not be cured? O Maker of all and Physician of the sick, before I utterly perish, save me, O Lord. γ Out of the depths I have cried to You, Lord; Lord, hear my voice. Wash me with my tears, O Savior, for I am defiled by many sins. Therefore I fall down before you: I have sinned, have mercy upon me, O God. δ Let Your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplication. I am a sheep of your spiritual flock, and I flee to You for refuge, O Good Shepherd. I have gone astray, O God, seek me and have mercy upon me.

Prosomoia Stichera from the Triodion, by Joseph Tone 4 You have given as a sign 2 Στιχηρὰ Προσόµοια του Τριωδίου, Ποίηµα Ἰωσὴφ Ἦχος δ Ἔδωκας σηµείωσιν Stichos 5 Στίχ. ε If You should mark iniquities, Lord, Lord, who shall stand? For with You there is forgiveness. Grant me reverence, separation from evil and perfect obedience, for I am now immersed in the passions of the flesh, separated from You and completely without hope, my God, King of all. Save me, Your prodigal son, by Your great goodness, Jesus the Almighty, the Savior of our souls. Stichos 6 For Your name s sake I have patiently waited for You, Lord; my soul has waited patiently for Your word, my soul has hoped in the Lord. When Moses the wonderful was purified by fasting he saw the Beloved One. Therefore imitate him, my humble soul, and hurry to be purified of all evil during these days of abstinence; that the Lord may grant forgiveness to you, so that you may behold Him; for He is the almighty, gracious Lord Who loves mankind. Another, by Theodore Tone Plagal 2 Praised by the archangels Ἐὰν ἀνοµίας παρατηρήσης, Κύριε, Κύριε τὶς ὑποστήσεται; ὅτι παρὰ σοὶ ὁ ἱλασµὸς ἐστιν. Let us, brethren, begin the second week of the Fast, fulfilling it day by day with rejoicing and remembering Elias the Tishbite, as a fiery chariot of great cardinal virtues, elevating our minds by subduing our passions, arming ourselves with purity, to drive away and subdue the enemy. Prosomoia Stichera from the Menaion March 6 Ἀπὸ φυλακῆς πρωϊας µέχρι νυκτός, ἀπὸ φυλακῆς πρωϊας ἐλπισάτω Ἰσραὴλ ἐπὶ τὸν Κύριον. In these latter days, O victorious martyrs, you have risen like unsetting stars in the firmament of the Church; with the splendor of your struggles, you have given light to the world, scattering the shadows of error, and now you have passed into the eternal Light; thus we the faithful celebrate your radiant and holy exploits, for we are always enriched by your watchful protection. η For with the Lord there is mercy, and with Him is plenteous redemption; and He shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities. (Repeat) In these latter days, O victorious martyrs, you have risen like unsetting stars in the firmament of the Church; with the splendor of your struggles, you have given light to the world, scattering the shadows of error, and now you have passed into the eternal Light; thus we the faithful celebrate your radiant and holy exploits, for we are always enriched by your watchful protection. θ Praise the Lord, all you nations; praise Him, all you peoples. Dragged away by force, O witnesses of Christ, you were shackled and thrown into a dungeon; captives together for many years, you were true guardians of the Faith; in his savage fury a tyrant ordered you put to death by the sword for not having yielded to his wicked oaths; but, O far-famed forty-two martyrs, you have joyfully inherited the Kingdom on high. ι For He has made His mercy to prevail over us, and the truth of the Lord abides to the ages.

Let us loudly acclaim the divine assembly of combatants, including Constantine, Bassoi, and Kallistos, Theophilos and Theodore, and the other martyrs, for they preferred a joyous immolation for the sake of the Life of all, and they found eternal rest in the City of the living God; they continually pray for us, so that on the day of judgment we might receive forgiveness of sins and perfect redemption. Theotokion from the Menaion Σὺν Κωνσταντίνῳ Βασσώῃ καὶ Καλλίστῳ, Θεόφιλον ἅπαντες, καὶ τὸν Θεόδωρον, καὶ τὸν λοιπὸν θεῖον ὅµιλον, τῶν Ἀθλοφόρων, µεγαλοφώνως ἀνευφηµήσωµεν θανεῖν γάρ προείλοντο, ὑπὲρ τῆς πάντων Ζωῆς, σφαγιασθέντες γηθόµενοι, καὶ νῦν ἐν πόλει, Θεοῦ τοῦ ζῶντος ἐπαναπαύονται, καὶ ἐξαιτοῦνται τοῦ εὑρεῖν ἡµᾶς, ἁµαρτηµάτων τὴν ἄφεσιν, ἐν ἡµέρᾳ τῆς δίκης, καὶ τελείαν ἀπολύτρωσιν. Προσόµοιον Θεοτοκίον τοῦ Μηναίου Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Through my indifference and laziness, O Lady, sadly I hit bottom in a multitude of sins, and I the wretch now am overcome by indecision and desperation, and I am miserable. O all-stainless Virgin, will you be a help for me, the expiation of all my sins, and my salvation, and grant divine consolation to my soul. I come with faith and I entreat and pray and implore and cry out to you: Leave me not to end up as the object of the enemy's malignant joy. Synodikon The Senior Priest (or the Hierarch) recites the following pericope from the Synodikon of the Seventh Ecumenical Council: Priest As the prophets beheld, as the apostles have taught, as the Church has received, as the teachers have dogmatized, as the universe has agreed, as grace has illumined, as truth has revealed, as falsehood has been dispelled, as wisdom has presented, as Christ has triumphed; this we believe, this we declare, this we preach: Christ our true God, and His saints we honor in words, in writings, in thoughts, in sacrifices, in temples, in icons, on the one hand bowing down and worshipping Christ as God and Master, on the other hand honoring the saints as true servants of the Master of all, and offering to them due veneration. This is the faith of the Apostles, This is the faith of the Fathers, This is the faith of the Orthodox, This is the faith which has established the Universe. Therefore with fraternal and filial love we praise the heralds of the faith, those who with glory and honor have struggled for the faith, and we say: for the champions of Orthodoxy, faithful emperors, most-holy patriarchs, hierarchs, teachers, martyrs and confessors: may their memory be eternal. May their memory be eternal. May their memory be eternal. May their memory be eternal. Martyrikon Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us, for we are greatly filled with lowliness. Greatly has our soul been filled therewith; let reproach come upon those who prosper, and lowliness upon the proud. Holy martyrs of the Lord, you sanctify every place and heal diseases. We implore you to intercede for us with the Lord, that He may save our souls from the snares of the enemy. Theotokion from the Triodion Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Our Father, Who art in the heavens, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.
