PRESIDENT S MESSAGE FOR THE 10 TH ODYSSEY 2015 Welcome to the Greek Orthodox Community s milestone of its 10 th Odyssey cultural event with the theme of philoxenia' meaning an act of hospitableness and welcome. Hospitality, the official English transla on of philoxenia', doesn't do jus ce to the concept as it does not cover its main element, which is generosity of spirit. In a world currently in turmoil with the Middle East refugee crisis it was resolved that our Community would seek the input from a number of Government Departments and related organisa ons that will provide some sound knowledge and informa on in rela on to the topic of working and living in Australia for recently arrived migrants seeking visas to remain in the Country. As well as providing this forum for the mul cultural Community s we are also a emp ng to bring to the forefront of Community awareness the issue of Demen a and its impact on society as more and more people are confronted with this social problem. Hellenic cultural events during the Odyssey are well represented with tradi onal music and cinema culmina ng with the GOC SA Dance Academy s performance at Sco Theatre on the 31 st of October. MESSAGE FROM THE PREMIER OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA This year s 10th anniversary Odyssey Fes val promises to be a joyous and engaging celebra on of Hellenic culture. With a theme of filoxenia, the program will once again see the Greek Orthodox Community of South Australia (GOCSA) generously share its customs and tradi ons, and extend its unparalleled hospitality to one and all. I commend GOCSA and the Odyssey organising commi ee for pu ng together a program of events characterised by an intriguing mix of both ancient and modern. And in advance I thank the ar sts, performers, sponsors, supporters and volunteers for bringing that program to life with passion and energy. Message from the Minister LECTURE NIGHT DEMENTIA AND ITS IMPACT ON SOCIETY This lecture, through the exper se of Geriatrician Dr Amalia Spiliopoulou, delves into the causes and symptoms of Alzheimer's as well as the toll it takes on a person s life and their family. Dr Spiliopoulou worked in the Department of Neuroscience at University Hospital of Birmingham where she developed her special interest in Neurodegenera ve disorders, Demen a and Parkinson s disease. Dr Spiliopoulou immigrated to South Australia in 2011 where she works at Repatria on Hospital, Flinders Medical centre and the Country. She is passionate about dignity in care especially in Demen a. Dr Spiliopoulou was born in Patras Greece. Finished her primary and secondary educa on in Patras and then moved to England where she did all her primary and specialty training as Physician Geriatrician. 8 This is a lecture that delves into the core of one of the world s major social problems and it s not to be missed! EVENT 3 MESSAGE BY THE LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION On behalf of the South Australian Liberal Party, I d like to congratulate the organisers of the 10 th Hellenic Cultural Odyssey Fes val and wish everyone a joyous me over the coming weeks. It s an opportunity for South Australians to enjoy and embrace Greek culture and tradi on. Greek migrants have made a significant contribu on to the broader community across all areas of every day life. Events held by the Greek Orthodox Community of South Australia, such as this one, enrich the State and promote strong mul cultural es. Over the next few weeks, the Greek Orthodox Community will share its art, theatre, food and music and I encourage all South Australians to get along and experience the fes vi es.
