Second Sunday after Epiphany (B) or 2EpiphanyB 1 Samuel 3:1-10, (11-20) Psalm 139:1-6, 13-18 1 Corinthians 6:12-20 John 1:43-51 1 Samuel 3:1 Now the boy Samuel was serving the LORD under Eli. The LORD's word was rare at that time, and visions weren't widely known. 2 One day Eli, whose eyes had grown so weak he was unable to see, was lying down in his room. 3 God's lamp hadn't gone out yet, and Samuel was lying down in the LORD's temple, where God's chest was. 4 The LORD called to Samuel. "I'm here," he said. 5 Samuel hurried to Eli and said, "I'm here. You called me?" "I didn't call you," Eli replied. "Go lie down." So he did. 6 Again the LORD called Samuel, so Samuel got up, went to Eli, and said, "I'm here. You called me?" "I didn't call, my son," Eli replied. "Go and lie down."( 7 Now Samuel didn't yet know the LORD, and the LORD's word hadn't yet been revealed to him.) 8 A third time the LORD called Samuel. He got up, went to Eli, and said, "I'm here. You called me?" Then Eli realized that it was the LORD who was calling the boy. 9 So Eli said to Samuel, "Go and lie down. If he calls you, say 'Speak, LORD. Your servant is listening.'" So Samuel went and lay down where he'd been. 10 Then the LORD came and stood there, calling just as before, "Samuel, Samuel!" Samuel said, "Speak. Your servant is listening." 11 The LORD said to Samuel, "I am about to do something in Israel that will make the ears of all who hear it tingle! 12 On that day, I will bring to pass against Eli everything I said about his household--every last bit of it! 13 I told him that I would punish his family forever because of the wrongdoing he knew about--how his sons were cursing God, but he wouldn't stop them. 14 Because of that I swore about Eli's household that his family's wrongdoing will never be reconciled by sacrifice or by offering." 15 Samuel lay there until morning, then opened the doors of the LORD's house. Samuel was afraid to tell the vision to Eli. 16 But Eli called Samuel, saying: "Samuel, my son!" "I'm here," Samuel said. 17 "What did he say to you?" Eli asked. "Don't hide anything from me. May God deal harshly with you and worse still if you hide from me a single word from everything he said to you." 18 So Samuel told him everything and hid nothing from him. "He is the LORD," Eli said. "He will do as he pleases." 19 So Samuel grew up, and the LORD was with him, not allowing any of his words to fail. 20 All Israel from Dan to Beer-sheba knew that Samuel was trustworthy as the LORD's prophet. 1 Samuel 3:1 Now the young man Samuel was ministering to the LORD under Eli. And the word of the LORD was rare in those days; there was no frequent vision. 2 At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his own place. 3 The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was. 4 Then the LORD called Samuel, and he said, "Here I am!" 5 and ran to Eli and said, "Here I am, for you called me." But he said, "I did not call; lie down again." So he went and lay down. 6 And the LORD called again, "Samuel!" and Samuel arose and went to Eli and said, "Here I am, for you called me." But he said, "I did not call, my son; lie down again." 7 Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, and the word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him. 8 And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli and said, "Here I am, for you called me." Then Eli perceived that the LORD was calling the young man. 9 Therefore Eli said to Samuel, "Go, lie down, and if he calls you, you shall say, 'Speak, LORD, for your servant hears.'" So Samuel went and lay down in his place. 10 And the LORD came and stood, calling as at other times, "Samuel! Samuel!" And Samuel said, "Speak, for your servant hears." 11 Then the LORD said to Samuel, "Behold, I am about to do a thing in Israel at which the two ears of everyone who hears it will tingle. 12 On that day I will fulfill against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from beginning to end. 13 And I declare to him that I am about to punish his house forever, for the iniquity that he knew, because his sons were blaspheming God, and he did not restrain them. 14 Therefore I swear to the house of Eli that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be atoned for by sacrifice or offering forever." 15 Samuel lay until morning; then he opened the doors of the house of the LORD. And Samuel was afraid to tell the vision to Eli. 16 But Eli called Samuel and said, "Samuel, my son." And he said, "Here I am." 17 And Eli said, "What was it that he told you? Do not hide it from me. May God do so to you and more also if you hide anything from me of all that he told you." 18 So Samuel told him everything and hid nothing from him. And he said, "It is the LORD. Let him do what seems good to him." 19 And

Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground. 20 And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba knew that Samuel was established as a prophet of the LORD. 1 Samuel 3:1 Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the LORD under Eli. The word of the LORD was rare in those days; visions were not widespread. 2 At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his room; 3 the lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was. 4 Then the LORD called, "Samuel! Samuel!" and he said, "Here I am!" 5 and ran to Eli, and said, "Here I am, for you called me." But he said, "I did not call; lie down again." So he went and lay down. 6 The LORD called again, "Samuel!" Samuel got up and went to Eli, and said, "Here I am, for you called me." But he said, "I did not call, my son; lie down again." 7 Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, and the word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him. 8 The LORD called Samuel again, a third time. And he got up and went to Eli, and said, "Here I am, for you called me." Then Eli perceived that the LORD was calling the boy. 9 Therefore Eli said to Samuel, "Go, lie down; and if he calls you, you shall say, 'Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.'" So Samuel went and lay down in his place. 10 Now the LORD came and stood there, calling as before, "Samuel! Samuel!" And Samuel said, "Speak, for your servant is listening." 11 Then the LORD said to Samuel, "See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make both ears of anyone who hears of it tingle. 12 On that day I will fulfill against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from beginning to end. 13 For I have told him that I am about to punish his house forever, for the iniquity that he knew, because his sons were blaspheming God, and he did not restrain them. 14 Therefore I swear to the house of Eli that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be expiated by sacrifice or offering forever." 15 Samuel lay there until morning; then he opened the doors of the house of the LORD. Samuel was afraid to tell the vision to Eli. 16 But Eli called Samuel and said, "Samuel, my son." He said, "Here I am." 17 Eli said, "What was it that he told you? Do not hide it from me. May God do so to you and more also, if you hide anything from me of all that he told you." 18 So Samuel told him everything and hid nothing from him. Then he said, "It is the LORD; let him do what seems good to him." 19 As Samuel grew up, the LORD was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground. 20 And all Israel from Dan to Beer-sheba knew that Samuel was a trustworthy prophet of the LORD. 1 Samuel 3:1 καὶ τὸ παιδάριον Σαµουηλ ἦν λειτουργῶν τῷ κυρίῳ ἐνώπιον Ηλι τοῦ ἱερέως καὶ ῥῆµα κυρίου ἦν τίµιον ἐν ταῖς ἡµέραις ἐκείναις οὐκ ἦν ὅρασις διαστέλλουσα 2 καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῇ ἡµέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ καὶ Ηλι ἐκάθευδεν ἐν τῷ τόπῳ αὐτοῦ καὶ οἱ ὀφθαλµοὶ αὐτοῦ ἤρξαντο βαρύνεσθαι καὶ οὐκ ἠδύνατο βλέπειν 3 καὶ ὁ λύχνος τοῦ θεοῦ πρὶν ἐπισκευασθῆναι καὶ Σαµουηλ ἐκάθευδεν ἐν τῷ ναῷ οὗ ἡ κιβωτὸς τοῦ θεοῦ 4 καὶ ἐκάλεσεν κύριος Σαµουηλ Σαµουηλ καὶ εἶπεν ἰδοὺ ἐγώ 5 καὶ ἔδραµεν πρὸς Ηλι καὶ εἶπεν ἰδοὺ ἐγώ ὅτι κέκληκάς µε καὶ εἶπεν οὐ κέκληκά σε ἀνάστρεφε κάθευδε καὶ ἀνέστρεψεν καὶ ἐκάθευδεν 6 καὶ προσέθετο κύριος καὶ ἐκάλεσεν Σαµουηλ Σαµουηλ καὶ ἐπορεύθη πρὸς Ηλι τὸ δεύτερον καὶ εἶπεν ἰδοὺ ἐγώ ὅτι κέκληκάς µε καὶ εἶπεν οὐ κέκληκά σε ἀνάστρεφε κάθευδε 7 καὶ Σαµουηλ πρὶν ἢ γνῶναι θεὸν καὶ ἀποκαλυφθῆναι αὐτῷ ῥῆµα κυρίου 8 καὶ προσέθετο κύριος καλέσαι Σαµουηλ ἐν τρίτῳ καὶ ἀνέστη καὶ ἐπορεύθη πρὸς Ηλι καὶ εἶπεν ἰδοὺ ἐγώ ὅτι κέκληκάς µε καὶ ἐσοφίσατο Ηλι ὅτι κύριος κέκληκεν τὸ παιδάριον 9 καὶ εἶπεν ἀνάστρεφε κάθευδε τέκνον καὶ ἔσται ἐὰν καλέσῃ σε καὶ ἐρεῖς λάλει κύριε ὅτι ἀκούει ὁ δοῦλός σου καὶ ἐπορεύθη Σαµουηλ καὶ ἐκοιµήθη ἐν τῷ τόπῳ αὐτοῦ 10 καὶ ἦλθεν κύριος καὶ κατέστη καὶ ἐκάλεσεν αὐτὸν ὡς ἅπαξ καὶ ἅπαξ καὶ εἶπεν Σαµουηλ λάλει ὅτι ἀκούει ὁ δοῦλός σου 11 καὶ εἶπεν κύριος πρὸς Σαµουηλ ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ποιῶ τὰ ῥήµατά µου ἐν Ισραηλ ὥστε παντὸς ἀκούοντος αὐτὰ ἠχήσει ἀµφότερα τὰ ὦτα αὐτοῦ 12 ἐν τῇ ἡµέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ ἐπεγερῶ ἐπὶ Ηλι πάντα ὅσα ἐλάλησα εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ ἄρξοµαι καὶ ἐπιτελέσω 13 καὶ ἀνήγγελκα αὐτῷ ὅτι ἐκδικῶ ἐγὼ τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ ἕως αἰῶνος ἐν ἀδικίαις υἱῶν αὐτοῦ ὅτι κακολογοῦντες θεὸν υἱοὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ οὐκ ἐνουθέτει αὐτοὺς καὶ οὐδ οὕτως 14 ὤµοσα τῷ οἴκῳ Ηλι εἰ ἐξιλασθήσεται ἀδικία οἴκου Ηλι ἐν θυµιάµατι καὶ ἐν θυσίαις ἕως αἰῶνος 15 καὶ κοιµᾶται Σαµουηλ ἕως πρωὶ καὶ ὤρθρισεν τὸ πρωὶ καὶ ἤνοιξεν τὰς θύρας οἴκου κυρίου καὶ Σαµουηλ ἐφοβήθη ἀπαγγεῖλαι τὴν ὅρασιν τῷ Ηλι 16 καὶ εἶπεν Ηλι πρὸς Σαµουηλ Σαµουηλ τέκνον καὶ εἶπεν ἰδοὺ ἐγώ 17 καὶ εἶπεν τί τὸ ῥῆµα τὸ λαληθὲν πρὸς σέ µὴ δὴ κρύψῃς ἀπ ἐµοῦ τάδε ποιήσαι σοι ὁ θεὸς καὶ τάδε προσθείη ἐὰν κρύψῃς ἀπ ἐµοῦ ῥῆµα ἐκ πάντων τῶν λόγων τῶν λαληθέντων σοι ἐν τοῖς ὠσίν σου 18 καὶ ἀπήγγειλεν Σαµουηλ πάντας τοὺς λόγους καὶ οὐκ ἔκρυψεν ἀπ αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπεν Ηλι κύριος αὐτός τὸ ἀγαθὸν

Psalm 139:1 For the music leader. Of David. A song. LORD, you have examined me. You know me. 2 You know when I sit down and when I stand up. Even from far away, you comprehend my plans. 3 You study my traveling and resting. You are thoroughly familiar with all my ways. 4 There isn't a word on my tongue, LORD, that you don't already know completely. 5 You surround me--front and back. You put your hand on me. 6 That kind of knowledge is too much for me; it's so high above me that I can't fathom it. Psalm 139:1 To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. O LORD, you have searched me and known me! 2 You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. 3 You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. 4 Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O LORD, you know it altogether. 5 You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it. Psalm 139:1 <To the leader. Of David. Your works are wonderful-- I know that very well. 15 My bones weren't hidden from you when I was being put together in a secret place, when I was being woven together in the deep parts of the earth. 16 Your eyes saw my embryo, and on your scroll every day was written what was being formed for me, before any one of them had yet happened. 17 God, your plans are incomprehensible to me! Their total number is countless! 18 If I tried to count them-- they outnumber grains of sand! If I came to the very end-- I'd still be with you. Psalm 139:13 For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. 14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. 15 My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. 16 Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them. 17 How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! 18 If I would count them, they are more than the sand. I awake, and I am still with you. Psalm 139:13 For it was you who formed my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother's womb. 14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; that I know very well. 15 My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. 16 Your eyes beheld my unformed substance. In your book were written all the days that were formed for me, when none of them as yet existed. 17 How weighty to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! 18 I try to count them-- they are more than the sand; I come to the end- - I am still with you.

1 Corinthians 6:12 I have the freedom to do anything, but not everything is helpful. I have the freedom to do anything, but I won't be controlled by anything. 13 Food is for the stomach and the stomach is for food, and yet God will do away with both. The body isn't for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord is for the body. 14 God has raised the Lord and will raise us through his power. 15 Don't you know that your bodies are parts of Christ? So then, should I take parts of Christ and make them a part of someone who is sleeping around? No way! 16 Don't you know that anyone who is joined to someone who is sleeping around is one body with that person? The scripture says, The two will become one flesh. 17 The one who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with him. 18 Avoid sexual immorality! Every sin that a person can do is committed outside the body, except those who engage in sexual immorality commit sin against their own bodies. 19 Or don't you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you? Don't you know that you have the Holy Spirit from God, and you don't belong to yourselves? 20 You have been bought and paid for, so honor God with your body. 1 Corinthians 6:12 "All things are lawful for me," but not all things are helpful. "All things are lawful for me," but I will not be enslaved by anything. 13 "Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food"--and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 14 And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power. 15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! 16 Or do you not know that he who is joined to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, "The two will become one flesh." 17 But he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. 18 Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. 19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body. 1 Corinthians 6:12 "All things are lawful for me," but not all things are beneficial. "All things are lawful for me," but I will not be dominated by anything. 13 "Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food," and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is meant not for fornication but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 14 And God raised the Lord and will also raise us by his power. 15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Should I therefore take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! 16 Do you not know that whoever is united to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For it is said, "The two shall be one flesh." 17 But anyone united to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. 18 Shun fornication! Every sin that a person commits is outside the body; but the fornicator sins against the body itself. 19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God, and that you are not your own? 20 For you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body.

John 1:43 The next day Jesus wanted to go into Galilee, and he found Philip. Jesus said to him, "Follow me." 44 Philip was from Bethsaida, the hometown of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, "We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law and the Prophets: Jesus, Joseph's son, from Nazareth." 46 Nathanael responded, "Can anything from Nazareth be good?" Philip said, "Come and see." 47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said about him, "Here is a genuine Israelite in whom there is no deceit." 48 Nathanael asked him, "How do you know me?" Jesus answered, "Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree." 49 Nathanael replied, "Rabbi, you are God's Son. You are the king of Israel." 50 Jesus answered, "Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these! 51 I assure you that you will see heaven open and God's angels going up to heaven and down to earth on the Human One. " John 1:43 The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, "Follow me." 44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, "We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph." 46 Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see." 47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, "Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!" 48 Nathanael said to him, "How do you know me?" Jesus answered him, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you." 49 Nathanael answered him, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!" 50 Jesus answered him, "Because I said to you, 'I saw you under the fig tree,' do you believe? You will see greater things than these." 51 And he said to him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man." John 1:43 The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, "Follow me." 44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, "We have found him about whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth." 46 Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see." 47 When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said of him, "Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!" 48 Nathanael asked him, "Where did you get to know me?" Jesus answered, "I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you." 49 Nathanael replied, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!" 50 Jesus answered, "Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these." 51 And he said to him, "Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man."
