There he leads a research team on wireless multimedia & networking and teaches modules related to communications. Prior to this post, he was the R&D manager at Ofcom, the UK Regulator and Competition Authority. There he managed a number of projects across a wide range of technical areas including cognitive radio, polite protocols, radar, fixed wireless and mobile technologies. His previous positions include telecommunications engineer with Intracom Telecom S.A. in Athens and a post doc research fellow in the Centre for Communication Systems Research at the University of Surrey, UK. He is being active with European funded research since 2000 and has participated in several EU projects. He holds two patents and has published more than 120 papers in international journals and conferences and chapters in four books. Dr. Politis was born in Athens, Greece and holds a Ph.D. and M.Sc. from the University of Surrey, UK and a B.Eng. from the Technical University of Athens, Greece. He has been a professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the university since 1989. He has also had visiting positions at the National Technical University of Athens, Medtronic in Minneapolis, and the Mittag Leffler Institute, Sweden. He has served as an associate editor for the IEEE Transaction on Automatic Control, the Systems and Control Letters, and the SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization. Dr. Georgiou was also elected to the Board of Governors of the Control Systems Society of the IEEE, effective January 2002 and to Fellow of IEEE in 2000. He was a research and teaching assistant at USC until 1988. From 1988 to 1992 he was a Member of the technical staff at Bell Communications Research (Bellcore) New Jersey, USA, where he was responsible for exploring new services concepts for visual applications and broadband communications services. In 1992, he joined the Development Programmes Department of Intracom S.A., where he worked on a variety of projects ranging from networking architectures to broadband access systems. He held the positions of department manager from January 1999 until December 2005, and manager of the Emerging Technologies Department of the company from January 2006 until November 2006. On November 2006, he joined Intracom Defense Electronics S.A., where he is currently the manager for the Network Centric Systems and New Technologies. In addition, he is a teaching & research fellow in strategic management at Athens Information Technology Institute.
