INTRODUCTION This publication lists the research activity of the Faculty of Letters of the University of Cyprus undertaken in the years 2008-2010. This book presents information on each member of the Faculty s academic staff who is directly or indirectly related to research, such as membership in professional societies, international organisations or editorial boards, and participation in research programmes. The internal research programmes which are listed in this publication have been approved by the Senate of the University of Cyprus. Publications make up a sizeable part of the book and only published books, chapters and articles are included, while publications in press or forthcoming are not. The number of journal publications and conference proceedings is limited to a selection of best ten publications by each member of the academic staff. Members of the academic staff are listed in alphabetical order within departments and the information outlined in all research profiles is based on electronic data received directly from members of the academic staff. The book contains three appendices: Appendix I lists all the doctoral titles awarded by the Faculty of Letters in alphabetical order within the period 2008-2010. Appendix II presents a list of abbreviated terms listed in this publication. Appendix III lists an index of the academic staff of the Faculty of Letters in alphabetical order by surname. Message from the Dean The Faculty of Letters at the University of Cyprus was established in 1996 as part of the institutional development of the Department of Greek Studies, Philosophy and History. The Faculty consists of three departments: Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies, Classics and Philosophy, and History and Archaeology. Three institutes also function under its umbrella: the School of Modern Greek, the Cultural Centre of the University of Cyprus and the Archaeological Research Unit. Through its academic and research programmes, the scholarly publications of its members and its broader intellectual and cultural activities, the Faculty of Letters covers the areas of History, Archaeology, Philology and Philosophy. With a series of research programmes, the Faculty delves more thoroughly into the academic fields covered by these scholarly disciplines, discovering new evidence and suggesting new approaches that have contributed to the progress of academic scholarship and have received international acclaim. The research activities of the Faculty of Letters are supported by the University of Cyprus as well as other research centres in Cyprus, the European Union and worldwide. In this context, the Faculty s academic staff head or participate in a number of important research programmes, participating in research missions and cooperating with some of the major archival centres and libraries in Greece and throughout the world. Some of the research programmes cover the following areas: Department of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies: Publications on modern appreciation of Byzantine and Medieval texts, publications on the appreciation of contemporary Greek authors, the compilation of a database for the study of Cyprus within medieval and renaissance sources, the writing of a dictionary of the modern Cypriot dialect, writing of a Modern History of Cyprus Literature as well as specialized subjects like the meaning and function of artistic interpretation in literature and painting. Department of Classics and Philosophy: Papyrology, palaeography, codicography, critical editions, electronic dictionaries, the study of the Cypriot and Cretan idioms and dialects. 6
Department of History and Archaeology: Preparation of management plans for historic and geographic areas in Cyprus, history and archaeology of medicine, palaeopathology and palaeoradiology, establishment of historic museums and archives, the design of digital libraries, the study of the Ancient Near East and the Eastern Mediterranean, the study of culture, tradition and songs of Azofiki and Marioupolis, arts and crafts in Thrace, Aegean Sea and Cyprus, Byzantine-Arabic relations, Cyprus during World War II, creation of a virtual food museum, economic history of Cyprus, underwater archaeology. Since its establishment, the Faculty of Letters has marked a steady progress; the achievements of its faculty members, through their research studies and publications, have received international recognition. Department of Byzan ne and Modern Greek Studies The research activities of the Department of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies cover a wide spectrum of philological and linguistic research ranging from fundamental traditional approaches to the modern theoretical and explanatory methods of reading literary texts. More specifically, the Department is involved in research in the subjects of Byzantine Philology, Modern Greek Literature, Theory of Literature, Comparative Literature and Linguistics. In this context, the Department runs the following research projects: 1. A new critical edition of the medieval Chronicle of Cyprus by Leontios Machairas 2. A new critical edition of the poetical work of Vasilis Michailides 3. Editorial matters in concerning C.P. Cavafy s work 4. Cyprus in Medieval and Renaissance sources 5. The concept and function of artistic representation in Literature and Painting 6. A critical edition of Michael Psellos Funeral Orations 7. History of Cyprus Literature 8. Ioakeim Kyprios Struggles (edition princeps) 9. Syntychies: An on-line dictionary of Cyprus Greek Moreover, the Department has shown significant research activity during the period under review, which is represented in the publications of Department members (published books, chapters in collective volumes and publications in journals or conference proceedings). In addition, the Department members have organized or participated in international conferences and collaborates with a number of research centres and foreign universities, such as the Universities of Athens, Thessaloniki, Sorbonne (Paris IV), Rome (La Sapienza), Napoli, Palermo, Venice, Oxford, Cambridge, King s College and Granada.
