Ευαγγελισμός της Θεοτόκου Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church Reverend Father Dean J. Dimon Proistamenos 2187 West 14th Street, Cleveland, OH 44113 216-861-0116 Sunday, October 14, 2018 Sunday of the 7th Ecumenical Council Nazarius, Gervasius, Protasius, & Celsus of Milan The holy Martyrs all contested for piety s sake in Milan; after the passage of much time their holy relics were discovered and given honourable burial by Saint Ambrose. Cosmas the Hagiopolite Saint Cosmas was from the Holy City, Jerusalem, and was a contemporary and peer of Saint John of Damascus (Dec. 4), with whom also he was reared when, because of his orphanhood he was adopted by Sergius, Saint John s father, and with whom he had the same instructor. About the year 743, he was elected Bishop of Maiuma, a coastal city of Palestine, aforetime under the jurisdiction of Gaza, with the name Port Gaza. During the reign of Saint Constantine the Great, it became a separate township and at that time was renamed Constantia, after Constantine, the son of the Emperor (see Sozomen, Eccl. Hist., V:3). Cosmas became an excellent hymnographer, from whence he is called the Composer and Melodist, Among his many compositions are the Canon of the Cross (Sept. 14) and the Canon for the Nativity of Christ, Christ is born, give ye glory. Righteous Paraskeve of Serbia Saint Paraskeve was born in Thrace in the eleventh century. In her youth she went to Constaninople, and thence journeyed to the Holy Land in pursuit of the ascetical life. After struggling for many years in the wilderness of the Jordan, she was moved by God to return to her homeland. She continued her monastic labours there for a few more years, and then reposed in peace. Epistle Ἀπόστολος Sunday of the 7th Ecumenical Council St. Paul's Letter to Titus 3:8-15 Prokeimenon. Mode 4. Daniel 3.26,27 Blessed are you, O Lord, the God of our fathers. Verse: For you are just in all you have done. The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to Titus 3:8-15 Titus, my son, the saying is sure. I desire you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to apply themselves to good deeds; these are excellent and profitable to men. But avoid stupid controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels over the law, for they are unprofitable and futile. As for a man who is factious, after admonishing him once or twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a person is perverted and sinful; he is self-condemned. When I send Artemas or Tychicos to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there. Do your best to speed Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way; see that they lack nothing. And let our people learn to apply themselves to good deeds, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not to be unfruitful. All who are with me send greeting to you. Greet those who love us in the faith. Grace be with you all. Amen. Gospel Sunday of the 7th Ecumenical Council The Gospel According to Luke 8:5-15 The Lord said this parable: "A sower went out to sow his seed; and as he sowed, some fell along the path, and was trodden under foot, and the birds of the air devoured it. And some fell on the rock; and as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns grew with it and choked it. And some fell into good soil and grew, and yielded a hundredfold." And when his disciples asked him what this parable meant, he said, "To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God; but for others they are in parables, so that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand. Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, that they may not believe and be saved. And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy; but these have no root, they believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away. And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature. And as for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bring forth fruit with patience." As he said these things, he cried out "He who has ears to hear, let him hear." 3

Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church Ladies of the Philoptochos Chapter 6007 As we begin our new ecclesiastical year, let us all renew our dedication to the efforts of our Philoptochos. I encourage women of all ages, young and old to become involved and join this amazing organization. Please do not miss the opportunity to share in the philanthropic endeavors that we undertake. It is a wonderful way of giving back while building new friendships and comradery. Philoptochos is the second largest women s philanthropic organization. Established 80 years ago, we are the philanthropic arm of the church. We perpetuate the values of our faith by our actions in helping the less fortunate and attempting to alleviate human suffering. Please join us and make a difference. Our mission statement is simple:..to aid the poor, the destitute, the hungry, the aged, the unemployed, the imprisoned, the widowed, the handicapped, the victims of natural disasters, to undertake the burial of impoverished persons, and to offer assistance to anyone who may need the help of the church through our fund raising efforts. (From the Mission Statement of the National Philoptochos) Our General meeting will be held Today, following the Divine Liturgy and coffee social in the church library. Please drop by and join us for fellowship and refreshments as we discuss this coming years agenda. Be part of the process. We need your time, talent and fresh ideas. Perhaps there is a need or a charity that is close to your heart that you would like Philoptochos to embrace. Bring your ideas to help perpetuate this ministry. Joining is not especially time consuming and the rewards are many. Please look for our upcoming events in the church bulletin. For additional information or questions please feel free to approach any board member or myself. My contact information is 216-269-7272 Sincerely, Despina Sarantopoulou, Philoptochos President 7

It is the practice of our Church to give the name of a Saint to the new born child. By assuming the name of a Saint, we not only honor and express our gratitude to a Holy Person for his exceptional contribution to the Orthodox Faith, but provide the new Christian with an example worthy of emulation. The Saint then becomes the Patron of the child protecting it from all danger. Through his prayers, God will grant the child the necessary illumination to become a zealous member of the Church and an ardent follower of Christ. Each month we will be acknowledging those celebrating their nameday in our monthly bulletin. If by chance we accidentally miss someone's nameday, we ask that you please contact the Church Office so that we may correct our records. We extend our prayers to all those celebrating October Namedays and beseech our heavenly Father to grant them many years.
