3 This part of the training package contains sample conversation questions that have been developed to give an indication of the type of questions that students may be asked. The questions are not a formula for the examination. Annotated extracts of conversations are also provided, which indicate performance typical of each of the mark ranges. Comments on each student s responses are provided, indicating how they meet the criteria applicable to the mark range. Appropriate parts of the student s responses have been transcribed in order to clarify their relationship with the criteria. All transcriptions are verbatim and students responses have not been corrected in any way. Sample Conversation Questions 1. Πες µου λίγα λόγια για την οικογένειά σου. He elaborates on his responses appropriately. The vocabulary is sophisticated and comprehensive, and his sentence structures are complex. The depth of his responses does not require the examiner to provide prompts. The conversation is very natural and fluent. The student is at ease and seems to move comfortably from one question to another, demonstrating a thorough knowledge of the topics discussed. Communicates confidently and fluently with correct intonation and pronunciation. Pronunciation is very clear and questions are well understood. The student uses a variety of fillers, which contribute to the authenticity, eg όσο γίνεται φυσικά....βέβαια. τα συνηθισµένα. Demonstrates depth of treatment through the presentation of relevant information, opinions and/or comment. The student s responses are comprehensive. In response to a question on his favourite subject, he answers extensively, eg Τα µαθήµατα που έχω διαλέξει µε βοηθάνε να καλλιεργήσω την προσωπικότητά µου Responds with a high level of grammatical accuracy, and breadth and sophistication of vocabulary and sentence structure. The student uses a broad range of vocabulary and sentence structures, which enrich his responses and indicate higher order thinking skills. η οικογένειά µου αποτελείται από τέσσερα µέλη ευωδιαστά λουλούδια ωραία εξωτερική εµφάνιση γυµνάζοµαι πρέπει να διατηρούµε τη γλώσσα µας γιατί από κει διατηρούµε την εθνικότητά µας δεν πάει σπίτι ελληνικό χωρίς ελιά. He moves between tenses and structures quite fluently and requires little encouragement from the examiner. The student develops his ideas very well and the conversation flows naturally. Communicates confidently and fluently with correct intonation and pronunciation. Pronunciation is clear and all questions are well understood. Intonation is accurate and authentic, while the confidence of the student is demonstrated by phrases such as όπως είπα προλίγο τι άλλο να πούµε. Demonstrates depth of treatment through the presentation of relevant information, opinions and/or comment. The student responds with relevant information and is able to expand on issues raised in the questions, eg λίγους φίλους και καλούς κάπου-κάπου περνάνε απο κει το ποδόσφαιρο το κοψα το βαρέθηκα. Responds with a range of vocabulary and structures, but with some minor inaccuracies. The student communicates effectively, confidently and fluently using a range of structures, idioms, and vocabulary. Some minor grammatical inaccuracies occur but do not detract from the student s overall performance. The examiner moves easily from one question to another covering a range of topics and encouraging the student to expand wherever possible. He provides greater depth in the responses as the conversation progresses, when he appears more at ease with an examination situation. Communicates effectively, with some degree of fluency and authenticity. The student is clearly confident and uses a range of expressions that indicate some fluency and authenticity. Examples of the student s competence are demonstrated by the regular use of present and past tenses as well as a variety of expressions. Να σου πω την αλήθεια, δεν έχω κανένα συγγενή στην Αυστραλία. Responds with relevant information and a range of relevant opinions and/or comment. The student communicates effectively and demonstrates the ability to expand on his responses. In response to one question on places he had visited, he was able to expand on his response rather than provide a list. Είχαµε πάει µια φορά κρουαζιέρα στην Τουρκία. Responds with a range of vocabulary and structures, but with some inaccuracies. The student demonstrates competence with reasonably complex structures despite some inaccuracies. είναι µια περιοχή κατάλληλη για όλους γεµάτο συνταξιούχοι µ αρέσει ν ασχολούµαι µε ο,τι έχει να κάνει ελληνικό. He communicates fluently despite some inaccuracies. His responses are often short and the examiner must ask additional questions to get a full answer. Maintains satisfactory communication with some degree of fluency but with repetition and inaccuracies in grammar and vocabulary. The student has good comprehension skills. He occasionally uses fillers in English, eg always µπορείς. However, he then goes on to provide a response in Greek. He makes a concerted effort to get the message across despite the inaccuracies. οι γονείς µου και τις γονείς της γυναίκας µου θέλουν να γίνω κάτι µεγάλο. Responds with relevant information and opinions. Some responses include good explanation and expansion of concepts. For example, when the student talks of something that is of particular interest to him, such as his plans for the future, and his ideas on friends and family. Η αυλή ήταν µεγάλη αλλά τώρα που είσαι µεγάλος δεν χρειάζεσαι την αυλή να παίζεις ποδόσφαιρο πρέπει να έχεις σεβασµό στην µάνα σου που σ έχει γεννήσει να µε βοηθάνε και να τους βοηθάω να σπουδάσω στην µουσική Page 5

This is demonstrated by the number of questions the examiner is required to ask. Some responses are adequately developed but in some cases the student does not understand the question. Occasionally she needs prompting or simplification of the question. Her immediate responses are not always well developed. Maintains a basic level of communication using simple structures and vocabulary with frequent pauses and errors. Verb conjugation, as well as noun and adjectival agreement, are problematic, as is the use of tenses. While at times some ideas the student attempts to convey are difficult to comprehend, basic communication is usually achieved. ένα µεγάλο βεράντα ένα δάσκαλος πολλές έλληνες ο µπαµπάς µου ξαδέλφια τα καυτερά ντοµάτες. Presents some relevant information, opinions or ideas. The student is able to convey some relevant information but her difficulty with some structures and vocabulary prevents any meaningful expansion or development of ideas. Τώρα που είµαστε µεγάλοι δεν χρειάζουµε να παίζουµε µπάλα µ αρέσει πάρα πολύ να ζωγραφίσω ένα µέρα µπορεί να κάνω κάτι σαν αυτό. Page 6
