Please mark your calendars. PHILOPTOCHOS School supplies are needed for Lafayette Academy students to begin the school year. Philoptochos started its annual school supply drive earlier to help parents preparing their children for the coming year. Below are the items still needed by the students. Spiral notebooks, rulers, pocket folders, washable markers, dry erase markers, color pencils, crayons, watercolors, index cards, pencils, pink erasers, pens, glue sticks, construction paper, and whatever else you think children normally need for school Distribution of school supplies began this past week. SUNDAY, AUGUST 9 ATTENDANCE 150 ~ CANDLE AND TRAY COLLECTIONS $518 Message from Father George A HOME FOR GOD A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of touring the French Quarter on a horse carriage. One of the landmarks described by our tour guide was the home of New Orleans Mayor Nicolas Girod. A legend purports that this was intended to be a residence for Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte after his exile from France. The mayor had sent a boat to bring the exiled Napoleon to New Orleans, but he had died in the meantime and never came here. This is a local legend and is quite believable. The relevance in this story is that Mayor Girod had such an affection for the ousted leader that he would even bring him into his home to stay. This is a similar dedication and affection that we as Christians should have for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Do we invite God into our homes? Do we have private prayer corners or home altars in our residences? As we wake up each morning do we greet the newly risen sun and greet the Risen Son of God? For hundreds of years, Orthodox Christians gather in their homes at a home altar to begin the day in prayer and thanksgiving to God. For those of you who follow Facebook, there is a Facebook page for the Orthodox Christian Network. For months they have been displaying photos from the homes of Orthodox Christians around the world showing where they stand in prayer in their home altar. Some of these are simple and some quite elaborate. We are encouraged do the same and to gather as a family to lift up our voices in prayer and in thanksgiving to God in our home Church. When God is invited and given a place in our homes, He is also quickly invited into the home of our hearts and resides there - for truly one of the much sought after desires of Orthodox Christians is that we have God in our hearts so that He will also be in our minds and in the things that we do and say. STRATEGIC PLAN UNVEILED AND UNDERWAY Father George thanks parishioners for their enthusiastic response since the first meeting to introduce the Strategic Plan for the Metropolis of Atlanta. A number of you signed up for this landmark undertaking. The ultimate goal of the Metropolis Strategic Plan is to provide the Priests and Lay Leaders of our Parishes across the Metropolis with an array of best practices (Ministries, Activities, Programs, and Services) that can be readily and easily used to lead the way to stronger and more effective Parishes. Working with Father on this project as Parish Champion is Steve Psarellis. This position was appointed by our Parish Council president as requested by the Metropolis Planning Committee. Next month, at the first Philoptochos meeting Father will be offering a brief overview of the Strategic Plan and seeking even more volunteers for this exceptional program from the Metropolis of Atlanta. THE EPISTLE I Corinthians 9:2-12 BRETHREN, you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord. This is my defense to those who would examine me. Do we not have the right to our food and drink? Do we not have the right to be accompanied by a wife, as the other apostles and the brothers of the Lord and Cephas? Or is it only Barnabas and I who have no right to refrain from working for a living? Who serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard without eating any of its fruit? Who tends a flock without getting some of the milk? Do I say this on human authority? Does not the law say the same? For it is written in the law of Moses, "You shall not muzzle an ox when it is treading out the grain." Is it for oxen that God is concerned? Does he not speak entirely for our sake? It was written for our sake, because the plowman should plow in hope and the thresher thresh in hope of a share in the crop. If we have sown spiritual good among you, is it too much if we reap your material benefits? If others share this rightful claim upon you, do not we still more? Nevertheless, we have not made use of this right, but we endure anything rather than put an obstacle in the way of the gospel of Christ. THE GOSPEL Matthew 18:23-35 The Lord said this parable: "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants. When he began the reckoning, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents; and as he could not pay, his lord ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made. So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, 'Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.' And out of pity for him the lord of that servant released him and forgave him the debt. But that same servant, as he went out, came upon one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii; and seizing him by the throat he said, 'Pay what you owe.' So his fellow servant fell down and besought him, 'Have patience with me, and I will pay you.' He refused and went and put him in prison till he should pay the debt. When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their lord all that had taken place. Then his lord summoned him and said to him, 'You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you besought me; and should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?' And in anger his lord delivered him to the jailors, till he should pay all his debt. So also my heavenly Father will do to everyone of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart."

Here are two new learning opportunities to which they look forward: Beginning September 13, 2015, the first day of class, Father George will offer a sermonette for the children after the Gospel reading (a few minutes after 10 am). For the past two years, the children learned to chant 10 hymns, and the staff encourages them to sing in church. Beginning September 13, 2015, everyone is invited to join the children and choir in chanting the Communion Hymn Enite ton Kyrion - Praise the Lord. So, bring your listening ears, and join your singing voices,!
