1 HOLY TAXIARHAI AND SAINT HARALAMBOS GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH 7373 CALDWELL AVENUE, NILES, ILLINOIS PHONE (847) THE HOLY NEW MARTYR GEORGE THE SANDALMAKER FROM PHILADELPHIA Saint George, also known as Hatzi-George, was born to Christian parents in Philadelphia of Asia Minor. As a young man, he learned the craft of sandal making, whereupon he moved to the village of Karatzasu in the province of Ilioupolis where he opened a little shop. One night, while he was out celebreating with friends, one of them became drunk, fell from a great height and died. According to the local law, a fine was levied in such instances and every Christian present was required to contribute his share of the fine because of the death. George, however, flatly refused to pay his share, contending it was an injustice for one to pay without being one s fault. Brought before the judge, George was asked why he did not pay his share. He hastily answered, Do you have authority to force Muslims to pay a fine when infidels (non-muslims) are killed? Hearing this, the astounded judge asked George, And what are you? Blinded by anger, George foolishly answered, I am a Muslim, and at that very moment asked to be circumcised and initiated into the Muslim faith. Later George deeply regretted his betrayal of Christ, and for the sake of his salvation, went to Mount Athos, confessed his sin, was chrismated back into the Orthodox Church and lived in repentance and asceticism for some time. Yet this did not satisfy George, whose soul was tormented for his denial, forday and night he kept remembering thee words of Christ, Whoever denies Me before me, I too will deny him before My Father (Matt 10:33). After desperatedly seeking the advice of various fathers, he decided to return to his village of Karatzasu. In Karatzasu, George was immediately recognized by some Muslims, who brought him before the judge for returning to Orthodoxy based on how he dressed. George confessed his error of abandoming his faith in Christ which is good and pure gold, for Islam which is counterfeit and copper. And he explained that he returned to shed my blood for the love of my Christ. After the judge tried to persuade George to change his mind, and was unsuccessful, he was cast into prison for eight days and beaten severely. They stretched his legs to the point that they were almost torn apart. They tied a tourniquet around his head and squeezed it to the point that his eyes almost popped out of their sockets. No pain, however, could make George abandon Christ ever again. His only desire was to die an Orthodox Christian. Finally, after being unable to weaken the resolved of the athlete of Christ George, the judge sentenced him to be beheaded on October 2, His feast day is celebrated on this date. There are some days when Memorials are not permitted please call the church office before planning. Memorials take place at 40 days, at 6 months, at 1 year and at 3 years. After three years have passed, the departed are more properly remembered on the Saturdays of the Souls. Please also remember that we have discontinued the custom of placing candles in the kolyva. SACRAMENTAL REGISTRY Congratulations to....jim Veikos and Ellie Nikitopoulos who will be married today at St. Haralambos. ΝΑ ΖΗΣΟΥΝ! WHO CAN RECEIVE HOLY COMMUNION? Because receiving Holy Communion or any other Sacrament is an expression of our acceptance of the dogmatic and moral teachings of the Orthodox Faith, only Orthodox Christians (by baptism or chrismation) in good standing may participate. For this reason, persons who do not agree with these teachings, or not in good standing (for example, married outside the church, or unmarried but sexually active, or civilly divorced but not ecclesiastically divorced), must return to good standing in order to participate in Orthodox Sacraments such as Holy Communion and Unction. This is also the reason that Orthodox Christians do not receive sacraments in non-orthodox churches. ABOUT KNEELING, STANDING and SITTING As an expression of awe and respect, there are times when it is proper to kneel in church, especially at the time when the holy bread and wine are consecrated (called the Epiclesis ) into the precious Body and Blood of our Lord. At the Epiclesis, all the faithful are expected to kneel during weekday Liturgies; on Sundays, however, some may kneel and others may choose to stand. Those who are unable to kneel for various reasons are asked to remain standing. Sitting (except for health reasons) at the Epiclesis is not respectful. SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS Sunday School has begun! Make sure to register your children in this most important program! Registration forms are available in the church office! Sunday School begins at 9:30 don t be late! 3 STEWARDSHIP 2016! If you have not yet made your 2016 commitments, please do so. There is no minimum, but true stewardship means we set a level of giving in proportion to our resources and income. Our stewardship level should be an amount that reflects our growing love of God and our appreciation for the blessings and benefits we derive from our Church! COFFEE HOUR Coffee Hour is offered every Sunday by our various church organizations in order to provide fellowship and the opportunity to get to know one another. (Μέχρι πρόσφατα, οι περισσότερες Ορθόδοξες εκκλησίες δεν είχαν καθόλου καθίσματα δια τους πιστούς! Tα καθίσματα υπήρχαν μόνον κατά μήκος των τοίχων δια τους ηλικιωμένους.) Ως έκφραση δέους και σεβασμού, υπάρχουν φορές που είθισται όμως να γονατίζουμε στην εκκλησία, ιδιαιτέρως κατά την ώρα της Επικλήσεως, όταν ο ιερός άρτος και οίνος μεταβάλλονται εις το τίμιο Σώμα και Αίμα του Χρηστού μας. Κατά την Επίκλησιν (Σε Υμνοῦμεν), στις καθημερινές λειτουργίες, αναμένεται να γονατίζουν όλοι οι πιστοί. Κάθε Κυριακή όμως, μερικοί διαλέγουν να γονατίζουν και άλλοι παραμένουν όρθιοι. Αυτοί που για διάφορες αιτίες δεν δύνανται να γονατίσουν, παρακαλούνται να παραμένουν όρθιοι εις ένδειξιν σεβασμού. Εκτός για λόγους υγείας, δεν είναι αρμόζον να κάθεται κανείς την ώρα της Επικλήσεως. ΕΥΧΑΡΙΣΤΩ τις κυριες της Φιλοπτώχου για την διοργάνωση του ξεχωριστού δείπνου της περασμένης Δευτέρας! Reject not the voices of sinners in prayer; instead, come, for you are good, to the aid of us who in faith cry out to you. Hasten in intercession, and hurry in supplication O Theotokos, as the protectress for all τime of those who honor you.
