2 WEEKLY MESSAGE We hear about a young man in today s Gospel lesson who was all alone. He had been sick for 38 years, but every year, when the time came to be healed by God s miracle, he was left lying there still sick. One day Jesus asked him, Do you want to be made well? The sick man answered Him, Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool. (John Κύριε, άνθρωπον ουκ έχω.) It was just a few weeks ago that we heard the words of Pontius Pilate, Behold the Man, (John 19.5 Ιδού ο άνθρωπος) as our Lord Jesus Christ was about to be crucified. Through the words of Pilate, we know what the young man lying in front of Jesus did not know. Jesus is the man, the one true human being who is able to help us be healed. In the case of the young man in the Gospel, his illness was physical and had left him crippled for decades, unable even to walk. In our case, our illness may or may not be physical, but we are ill in need of healing by Jesus Christ. Thankfully, as a result of Pascha and God s saving mission, we have someone who can heal us, and we do not have to wait for 38 years before someone drags us into the pool. Thankfully, we have the Church which is the presence of God in the world today. The Church is called the Body of Christ and through our love for each other, we no longer have to claim I have no man to help us. We have Christ because we have the Church. One of the mistakes many people make today is to believe, I don t need the Church. I have Jesus. This simply is not true. Of course we each have Jesus, if we want Him, but there is more to God s healing power in the Church than just a place to gather. The young man lay at the Church just a few feet away from the pool for 38 years and was never healed. Just being at the Church won t be enough for us to be healed. Christ asks, Do you want to be made well? If you want to be made well, you have the Church to help you. The Church is not just the building. It is each of us gathered together on Sunday mornings and other feasts for Divine Liturgy. It is those of us who come Mondays to feed the hungry in our hall. It is those of us who teach in our schools. It is our ministry volunteers. It is the people of God, Greek Orthodox faithful, dedicated to living a life united to Jesus Christ. Since we are the Church, and each of us has been baptized into Christ and put on Christ, then the Church is Christ. The Church is the man who is able to heal us and help us when nobody else is available. 5 EPISTLE Acts of the Apostles 9:32-42 I n those days, as Peter went here and there among them all, he came down also to the saints that lived at Lydda. There he found a man named Aeneas, who had been bedridden for eight years and was paralyzed. And Peter said to him, "Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you; rise and make your bed." And immediately he rose. And all the residents of Lydda and Sharon saw him, and they turned to the Lord. Now there was at Joppa a disciple named Tabitha, which means Dorcas. She was full of good works and acts of charity. In those days she fell sick and died; and when they had washed her, they laid her in an upper room. Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, hearing that Peter was there, sent two men to him entreating him, "Please come to us without delay." So Peter rose and went with them. And when he had come, they took him to the upper room. All the widows stood beside him weeping, and showing tunics and other garments which Dorcas made while she was with them. But Peter put them all outside and knelt down and prayed; then turning to the body he said, "Tabitha, rise." And she opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter she sat up. And he gave her his hand and lifted her up. Then calling the saints and widows he presented her alive. And it became known throughout all Joppa, and many believed in the Lord. GOSPEL John 5:1-15 A t that time, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Hebrew called Bethesda which has five porticoes. In these lay a multitude of invalids, blind, lame, paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water; for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool, and troubled the water; whoever stepped in first after the troubling of the water was healed of whatever disease he had. One man was there, who had been ill for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him and knew that he had been lying there a long time, he said to him, "Do you want to be healed?" The sick man answered him, "Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is troubled, and while I am going another steps down before me." Jesus said to him, "Rise, take up your pallet, and walk." And at once the man was healed, and he took up his pallet and walked. Now that day was the sabbath. So the Jews said to the man who was cured, "It is the sabbath, it is not lawful for you to carry your pallet." But he answered them, "The man who healed me said to me, 'Take up your pallet, and walk.' " They asked him, "Who is the man who said to you, 'Take up your pallet, and walk'?" Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in the place. Afterward, Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, "See, you are well! Sin no more, that nothing worse befall you." The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him. HOLY EUCHARIST (HOLY COMMUNION) Holy Communion is a Sacrament within the Orthodox Church and is only offered to Baptized and/or Chrismated Orthodox Christians who have prepared themselves to receive the Body and Blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. As you come to receive, please follow the direction of the Parish Council Members, Ushers, and Acolytes. We remind everyone that the Blessed Bread (Antidoron) offered at the end of the Divine Liturgy may be received by all.

METROPOLITAN TO VISIT MT ATHOS His Eminence, Metropolitan Nikitas, and a small group of pilgrims will travel to Mount Athos early next month. Some people have asked about giving names and support for the monastic communities there. If you wish to do so, the names and donations must reach His Eminence by Monday, May 8th. You may give them to Fr Athanasios or Fr Sampson and they will see to it that they reach the Metropolitan.

7 Saints and Feasts of the Week SUNDAY OF THE PARALYTIC Close to the Sheep's Gate in Jerusalem, there was a pool, which was called the Sheep's Pool. It had around it five sets of pillars supporting a domed roof. Under this roof there lay very many sick people with various maladies, awaiting the moving of the water. The first to step in after the troubling of the water was healed immediately of whatever malady he had. It was there that the paralytic of today's Gospel way lying, tormented by his infirmity of 38 years. When Christ beheld him, He asked him, "Wilt thou be made whole?" And he answered with a quiet and meek voice, "Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool." The Lord said unto him, "Rise, take up thy bed, and walk." And straightaway the man was made whole and took up his bed. Walking in the presence of all, he departed rejoicing to his own house. According to the expounders of the Gospels, the Lord Jesus healed this paralytic during the days of the Passover, when He had gone to Jerusalem for the Feast, and dwelt there teaching and working miracles. ΚΥΡΙΑΚΗ ΤΟΥ ΠΑΡΑΛΥΤΟΥ Η Κυριακή του Παραλύτου αντλεί το θέμα της από την ευαγγελική περικοπή, που αναγινώσκεται στην θεία λειτουργία. ST JOHN THE THEOLOGIAN This Apostle was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and was the son of Zebedee and Salome, and the brother of James the elder. First a fisherman by trade, he became an Apostle and the beloved Disciple of Christ. Only he of all the Disciples followed Him even to the Cross, and was entrusted with the care of our Saviour's Mother, as it were another son to her, and a brother of Christ the Teacher. After this, he preached throughout Asia Minor, especially in Ephesus. When the second persecution against the Christians began in the year 96 during the reign of Domitian, he was taken in bonds to Rome, and there was cast into a vat filled to the brim with boiling oil. Coming forth therefrom unharmed, he was exiled to the island of Patmos, where he wrote the Book of Revelation. Returning again to Ephesus after the death of the tyrant, he wrote his Gospel (after the other Evangelists had already written theirs) and his three Catholic Epistles. In all, he lived ninetyfive years and fell asleep in the Lord during the reign of Trajan in the year 100. He was called Theologian because he loftily expounded in his Gospel the theology of the inexpressible and eternal birth of the Son and Word of God the Father. It is for this cause that an eagle-a symbol of the Holy Spirit, as Saint Irenaeus says-is depicted in his icon, for this was one of the four symbolic living creatures that the Prophet Ezekiel saw (Ezek. 1:10). The feast today in honour of the holy Apostle John commemorates the miracle taking place each year in Ephesus, in which a certain dust or powder, called manna, suddenly poured forth from his tomb and was used by the faithful for deliverance from maladies of both soul and body.

10 Sunday Church School News Often, during the later stages of dementia, people suffering from Alzheimer's or other memory loss, fidget as though agitated or searching for something to hold. During Lent, while our Pre-K/K class was learning about doing more to help others and give to others every day of their lives, they made items to place on a fidget blanket that would be donated to Peninsula nursing home. On the last day of Sunday School, we took a field trip to the nursing home and the children were able to give the blankets they made to the physical therapy department and see for themselves how their actions can affect their brothers & sisters in Christ.
