The good Shepherd gives His life for the sheep." John 10:11 I greet you with love in the Name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ with prayers and best wishes for a happy, healthy and productive New Year. As you know, we at the Metropolis of Atlanta, as you do in your local parish, are constantly thinking about developing programs and activities to better serve the Faithful in their spiritual and family life. With that in mind, our Metropolis Philoptochos is planning a Family Camp for Special Needs focusing on Autism, chaired by Mrs. Despina Koulianos, at our beloved Diakonia Retreat Center on Memorial Day Weekend, May 22-25, This offering by our Philoptochos is a beautiful expression of love and concern for the youth of the Church, inspired by the quote from the Gospel of John: Christ the Good Shepherd loves and takes care of all of His sheep. Autism is a focus of our National Philoptochos, which recognizes that the Autistic community is growing. Where many of these children are left out is in activities within their own local churches. Children on the Autism spectrum often do not understand abstract concepts like faith. Our Philoptochos Youth Ministry Committee is collaborating with the Metropolis Family Life Ministry and specialists in the field to provide a faith based camp with activities to help Autistic children grow in their relationship with God. This camp is for families with a child on the Autism Spectrum. Siblings are invited and welcome in all aspects of the program. Parents will share some activities with their children and some special parent seminars as well. This is the first Special Needs Family Camp in our Metropolis and we are limiting the session to 10 families to ensure we accommodate the physical, social/emotional, dietary and especially spiritual needs of all. We will be working closely with you, our clergy, for referrals of families. Because we are accepting a limited number of families, we encourage you to provide this information to any of your parishioners who would benefit from this unique ministry. Each service will begin at 9:00 am with the Divine Liturgy in the Cathedral and will end with the Memorial Service. During the memorial, we will pray for the souls of the names that you have submitted on the enclosed form. Please write the baptismal, or Christian, names of your loved ones and friends not nicknames: Konstantinos as opposed to Kosta or Gus, Panagiotis as opposed to Taki, etc. The names may be either English or Greek but must be legible. Sometimes when I am in a rush I jot down some notes and later cannot even read my own writing. So, please take care in writing the names that will be remembered in prayer. Also, everyone in attendance may provide a small bowl of Koliva. Making Koliva is a wonderful way for the family to participate in this loving gesture of remembering our loved ones, who are departed. After you have made your Koliva, bring it to the Liturgy for the Memorial, together as a family. These are among the important life events that each Orthodox Christian family needs to pass down from generation to generation. If I do not teach my children to pray for those who are departed, will they pray for me when I am asleep in the Lord? So, please join us for the Saturday of Souls Liturgies and Memorials as we lift up the names of our loved ones in prayer together as a family in worship. May their memory be eternal! THEODORE THE COMMANDER AND GREAT MARTYR The holy Martyr Theodore was from Euchaita of Galatia and lived in Heraclea of Pontus. He was a renowned commander in the military. Emperor Licinius learned that he was a Christian, who abominated the idols. Licinius, therefore, sent certain men to him, asking that Theodore appear before him. Instead, Theodore sent back a message stating that it was necessary for Licinius to come to Heraclea. Seeing in this a hope of turning Saint Theodore away from Christ, the emperor did as was asked of him. When the Emperor arrived in Heraclea, Theodore met him with honor, which made the Emperor believe that through Theodore he would be able to draw the Christians to the worship of his idols. He publicly bade Theodore to offer sacrifice to the gods. But, Theodore asked that the emperor entrust him with the most venerable of his gods, those made of gold and silver, that he might take them home and himself attend upon them that evening, promising that the following day he would honor them in public. The Emperor gave command that Theodore's request be fulfilled. At home Theodore broke the idols in pieces and distributed the gold and silver to the poor by night. The next day Licinius was told that a pauper was seem carrying the head of Artemis. Saint Theodore, far from repenting of this, confessed Christ boldly. Furious, Licinius had the Saint put to many torments, then crucified. While upon the cross, the holy Martyr was further tormented and dismembered. The next day Licinius sent men to take his corpse and cast it into the sea, but they found the Saint alive and perfectly whole. Through this, many believed in Christ. Seeing his own men turn to Christ and the city in an uproar, Licinius had Theodore beheaded about the year 320.

Ην δὲ ὁ υἱὸς αὐτοῦ ὁ πρεσβύτερος ἐν ἀγρῷ καὶ ὡς ἐρχόμενος ἤγγισε τῇ οἰκίᾳ, ἤκουσε συμφωνίας καὶ χορῶν, καὶ προσκαλεσάμενος ἕνα τῶν παίδων ἐπυνθάνετο τί εἴη ταῦτα. ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὅτι ὁ ἀδελφός σου ἥκει καὶ ἔθυσεν ὁ πατήρ σου τὸν μόσχον τὸν σιτευτόν, ὅτι ὑγιαίνοντα αὐτὸν ἀπέλαβεν. ὠργίσθη δὲ καὶ οὐκ ἤθελεν εἰσελθεῖν. ὁ οὖν πατὴρ αὐτοῦ ἐξελθὼν παρεκάλει αὐτόν. ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπε τῷ πατρί ἰδοὺ τοσαῦτα ἔτη δουλεύω σοι καὶ οὐδέποτε ἐντολήν σου παρῆλθον, καὶ ἐμοὶ οὐδέποτε ἔδωκας ἔριφον ἵνα μετὰ τῶν φίλων μου εὐφρανθῶ ὅτε δὲ ὁ υἱός σου οὗτος, ὁ καταφαγών σου τὸν βίον μετὰ πορνῶν, ἦλθεν, ἔθυσας αὐτῷ τὸν μόσχον τὸν σιτευτόν. ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῷ τέκνον, σὺ πάντοτε μετ ἐμοῦ εἶ, καὶ πάντα τὰ ἐμὰ σά ἐστιν εὐφρανθῆναι δὲ καὶ χαρῆναι ἔδει, ὅτι ὁ ἀδελφός σου οὗτος νεκρὸς ἦν καὶ ἀνέζησε, καὶ ἀπολωλὼς ἦν καὶ εὑρέθη. THE EPISTLE I Corinthians 6:12-20 Brethren, "all things are lawful for me," but not all things are helpful. "All things are lawful for me," but I will not be enslaved by anything. "Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food" -- and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is not meant for immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I therefore take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! Do you not know that he who joins himself to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, "The two shall become one flesh." But he who is united to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. Shun immorality. Every other sin which a man commits is outside the body; but the immoral man sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God? You are not your own; you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body and in your spirit which belong to God. THE GOSPEL Luke 15:11-32 The Lord said this parable: "There was a man who had two sons; and the younger of them said to his father, 'Father, give me the share of the property that falls to me.' And he divided his living between them. Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took his journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in loose living. And when he had spent everything, a great famine arose in that country, and he began to be in want. So he went and joined himself to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed swine. And he would gladly have fed on the pods that the swine ate; and no one gave him anything. Created for families with children on the Autism Spectrum! What is Family Camp? Schedule includes: The Metropolis of Atlanta Philoptochos, in yet another meaningful expression of concern for the youth of the Church, has mobilized ministries to establish a family camp for special needs focusing on Autism. A key partner for this camp is the Metropolis of Atlanta Family Life Ministry. We are providing a faith based camp helping children with Autism grow in their relationship with God. We will have a 1:1 ratio of trained counselors for each special needs child. Families will stay in cabins and experience all that our beautiful retreat center has to offer: recreation, art programs, special parent seminars, bonding opportunities with other families, and spiritual nourishment. This is the first Special Needs Family Camp in our Metropolis and we are limiting the session to 10 families to ensure we accommodate the physical, social/emotional, spiritual, and dietary needs of all. contact: Despina Koulianos!
