Τῷ θρόνῳ ἐν οὐρανῷ, τῷ πώλῳ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς, ἐποχούμενος Χριστὲ ὁ Θεός, τῶν Ἀγγέλων τὴν αἴνεσιν, καὶ τῶν Παίδων ἀνύμνησιν προσεδέξω βοώντων σοι Εὐλογημένος εἶ ὁ ἐρχόμενος, τὸν Ἀδὰμ ἀνακαλέσασθαι. On Sunday, five days before the Passover of the Law, the Lord came from Bethany to Jerusalem. Sending two of His disciples to bring Him a foal of an ass, He sat thereon and entered into the city. When the multitude there heard that Jesus was coming, they straightway took up the branches of palm trees in their hands, and went forth to meet Him. Others spread their garments on the ground, and yet others cut branches from the trees and strewed them in the way that Jesus was to pass; and all of them together, especially the children, went before and after Him, crying out: "Hosanna: Blessed is He that cometh in the Name of the Lord, the King of Israel" (John 12:13). This is the radiant and glorious festival of our Lord's entry into Jerusalem that we celebrate today. The branches of the palm trees symbolize Christ's victory over the devil and death. The word Hosanna means "Save, I pray," or "Save, now." The foal of an ass, and Jesus' sitting thereon, and the fact that this animal was untamed and considered unclean according to the Law, signified the former uncleanness and wildness of the nations, and their subjection thereafter to the holy Law of the Gospel.

3 The Triumphant Entry - Palm Sunday : Gospel: John 12:1 18 THE AGIASMA APRIL-MAY 2013 VOL. 13, ISSUE 04 An Easter Family Retreat Then, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was who had been dead, whom He had raised from the dead. There they made Him a supper; and Martha served, but Lazarus was one of those who sat at the table with Him. Then Mary took a pound of very costly oil of spikenard, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil. But one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon s son, who would betray Him, said, Why was this fragrant oil not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor? This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the money box; and he used to take what was put in it. But Jesus said, Let her alone; she has kept this for the day of My burial. For the poor you have with you always, but Me you do not have always. Now a great many of the Jews knew that He was there; and they came, not for Jesus sake only, but that they might also see Lazarus, whom He had raised from the dead. But the chief priests plotted to put Lazarus to death also, because on account of him many of the Jews went away and believed in Jesus. The next day a great multitude that had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, and cried out: Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! The King of Israel! Then Jesus, when He had found a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written: Fear not, daughter of Zion; Behold, your King is coming, Sitting on a donkey s colt. His disciples did not understand these things at first but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about Him and that they had done these things to Him. Therefore the people, who were with Him when He called Lazarus out of his tomb and raised him from the dead, bore witness. As we enter this holiest of weeks, we are not just remembering what happened around 2,000 years ago but we are living it today with Christ. As Christ is processing on Palm Sunday, we are there with the palms that symbolize our victory in Christ. As the Jewish people threw down their cloaks for Jesus, we lay down our whole lives. As they cry out Hosanna or Save us, we, too, cry out the same. But do we abandon Him when He comes not as a king with worldly prosperity but as a suffering servant, suffering for our sakes and calling us to be at His side? For Consideration What did Mary do to Jesus? What was her motive? How did Judas respond? What was his motive? What is happening in this story? What does this Gospel passage mean for our lives? To Do Together Palms for Victory As the palms symbolize victory, have your family make a victory collage. Get a large sheet of poster paper and draw images of victory on it. You can also use magazines to cut out the images and glue them on. Look for quotes from the Bible but also from popular culture that could symbolize Christ s victory. Be creative and have fun. Discuss the difference between Christian victory and victory in popular culture. When you are done, hang the poster somewhere for all to see during Holy Week. Compare Icons Visit Come and See Icons ( to view the Holy Week icons. Look at each one. Have children identify what they see, what they have questions about, and how the icons differ. Point out the icons to your children as you attend services during Holy Week. Help your children find answers to any questions they may have. Journey with the Lord As a family, make a plan for your journey with Christ to the Resurrection. Plan to attend as many services of the Church as possible. Also, consider your prayer life at home and how you will prepare yourself and your children to attend the services. In doing this, everyone can be active participants in the Resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. If we cannot attend services every evening, we should still read portions of the scripture and the hymns from the Holy Week book. If you do not have a copy, talk to your parish priest about where you can purchase one. Final Thought Today He returns from Bethany and proceeds of His own free will toward His holy and blessed passion, to consummate the mystery of salvation He comes without pomp or ostentation Let us run to accompany Him as He hastens toward His passion, and imitate those who met Him then, not by covering His path with garments, olive branches or palms, but by doing all we can to prostrate ourselves before Him by being humble and trying to live as He would wish So let us spread before His feet, not garments or olive branches, which delight the eyes for a few hours and then wither, but ourselves, clothed in His grace, or rather, clothed completely in Him. We who have been baptized into Christ must ourselves be the garments that we spread before Him. Sarantis My dearly beloved in Christ, our Lord, hosanna in the highest! It is my belief that as Orthodox Christians, we live in the moments of the Great Lent, and each one of us according to his or hers wisdom and strength acts according to faith. Most of us, if not all, during Great Lent try to pray more, and do some extra fasting in order to prepare for the Lord s Resurrection, Easter. Many times, however, we do find ourselves spiritually weak in acting-out our faith and tradition. Things go wrong or at least they do not go in our favor, and we wonder internally what is wrong in our lives. It is like crossing an intersection and we hear the crossing attendant s whistle blowing dangerously in our ears when we think the road was safe for us to cross. A whistle can get our attention quickly, wouldn t you agree? Its sound is used to control unruly behavior, signal the beginning or end of an event, or interrupt the action. The whistle is a signal for us to stop and learn why it was blown. So also are the events in our life. So what does the Lord uses to get our attention in our lives when things are not good? At times His tool is a restless spirit, conscience, which might appear as some vague dissatisfaction with life. Other times He uses a priest s sermon to help us recognize that He is speaking to us. Blessing us in an unusual way is another method that He employs. God sometimes allows our prayers to remain unanswered as a way of prompting us to sharpen our focus on Him. Or He may say no to our request in order to gain our attention. Likewise, disappointments, failures, and difficulties are occasionally His chosen tool for the same purpose. In all cases, though, He acts in our best interest. If we are wise, we will quickly seek Him out. In tragedies, financial reversals, and physical affliction, God waits to see if we will turn to Him and ask, Lord, are you speaking to me? God deserves our undivided attention, but we get preoccupied. He waits to speak with us, but we are often busy looking at our circumstances. I ask you to allow the events of life both the pleasant and the painful to punctual you to turn to God and ask, Lord, are you asking for my attention? My beloved, when we find ourselves in this situation, do not feel helpless. When the Lord is seeking our attention, do not be afraid to speak to him. Tell him your issues and concerns. Remember that, with His blessings, He has given us a great spiritual medical tool to bring our selves back to normal and feel His love. It is call Confession! It is the whistle that we can communicate back with God to become whole again. Confession, however, is not standing in front of an icon or at home and asking God to communicate with us. It is a sacrament that takes place in church (except when is deemed proper) in the presence of the priest. It is a medicine for healing the soul and body. It washes all our sins away in the same way the Sacrament of Baptism does. All it takes a contrite heart with courage to admit its wrongs and ask for God s forgiveness. It is so easy and simple, but yet seems so difficult to act. My beloved, as we live in the moments of Great Lent let nothing stand between us and God. Let us open communication with Him through the Sacrament of Confession with a contrite heart, and let us all celebrate His Resurrection in Glory to Him in the Highest. 6 THE AGIASMA APRIL-MAY 2013 VOL. 13, ISSUE 03 Πνευματικό Μήνυμα του Πατέρα Σαράντη Αγαπητοί μοι αδελφοί εν Χριστώ, «Ωσαννά εν τοις Υψίστοις!» Είναι η πεποίθησή μου ότι ως Ορθόδοξοι Χριστιανοί, ζούμε στις στιγμές της Μεγάλης Σαρακοστής, κι ο καθένας μας σύμφωνα με την δική του φρόνηση και δύναμη πράττει περί της πίστεως. Οι περισσότεροι από εμάς, εάν όχι όλοι, κατά τη διάρκειαν της Μεγάλης Σαρακοστής προσπαθούμε να προσευχηθούμε περισσότερο, και να κάνουμε κάποια πρόσθετη νηστεία, προκειμένου να προετοιμαστούμε για την Ανάσταση του Κυρίου μας, το Άγιο Πάσχα. Πολλές φορές, εντούτοις, βρισκόμαστε πνευματικά αδύνατοι να ασκούμε την πίστη και την παράδοσή μας. Καταλαβαίνουμε ότι τα πράγματα της ζωής μας πηγαίνουν λίγο στραβά ή τουλάχιστον δεν πηγαίνουν κατά την εύνοιά μας, και αναρωτιόμαστε εσωτερικά τι συμβαίνει με τη ζωή μας. Αυτή η αίσθησης μοιάζει σαν ένα πέρασμα μας σε κάποιο σταυροδρόμι που ακούμε τον ήχο της σειρήνας ν ακούγεται επικίνδυνα στα αυτιά μας όταν το πέρασμα μάς φαίνεται σαφές και ασφαλές. Ένα σφύριγμα μπορεί να προσλάβει την προσοχή μας γρήγορα, φυσικά θα συμφωνούσαμε! Ο ήχος του χρησιμοποιείται για να ελέγξει μια απείθαρχη συμπεριφορά, να επισημάνει την αρχή ή το τέλος ενός γεγονότος, ή να διακόψει τη δράση. Ο συριγμός είναι ένα σήμα για μας, να μας σταματήσει και να μάθουμε τι συμβαίνει. Έτσι επίσης είναι και τα γεγονότα στη ζωή μας. Με ίδιο τρόπο και ο Χριστός μάς ζητά την προσοχή μας στη ζωή μας όταν τα πράγματα δεν πάνε καλά. Μερικές φορές το εργαλείο του είναι η ανήσυχη συνείδησης, κάποια δύναμη που εμφανίζεται ως ασαφής και δυσάρεστη. Άλλες φορές χρησιμοποιεί το κήρυγμα του ιερέα για να μας βοηθήσει να αναγνωρίσουμε ότι μας μιλά. Η ευλογία Του με έναν ασυνήθιστο τρόπο είναι μια άλλη μέθοδος που μας συνομιλεί. Επιπλέον, οι απογοητεύσεις, οι αποτυχίες, και οι δυσκολίες μπορούν να τυγχάνουν περιστασιακά του επιλεγμένου εργαλείου Του για τον ίδιο σκοπό. Σ όλες τις περιπτώσεις, εν τούτοις, ενεργεί για το συμφέρον μας. Εάν είμαστε σοφοί, θα κοιτάξουμε γρήγορα να επικοινωνήσουμε μαζί Του. Στις τραγωδίες, στις οικονομικές αντιστροφές, και τη φυσική κατάθλιψη, ο Θεός περιμένει να δει εάν θα γυρίσουμε πίσω σ αυτόν και τον ρωτήσουμε, «Κύριε, είσαι εσύ που μιλάς μαζί μου;» Αξίζει στον Θεό μας η αδιαίρετη προσοχή μας. Περιμένει να μιλήσει με μας, αλλά εμείς είμαστε συχνά πολυάσχολοι στις περιστάσεις μας. Σεβαστοί μοι αδελφοί, όταν βρισκόμαστε σε τέτοια περίσταση, μην αισθανθείτε ανίσχυροι. Όταν ο Κύριος επιδιώκει την προσοχή μας, μην φοβηθείτε να μιλήσετε μαζί Του. Πέστε Του τις έννοιες σας και τις ανησυχίες σας. Να θυμάστε ότι, με τις ευλογίες του που μας έχει δώσει, μας έχει δώσει και ένα μεγάλο πνευματικό ιατρικό εργαλείο για να ξαναφέρει στους εαυτούς μας την ειρήνη και να αισθανθούμε την αγάπη του. Είναι το εργαλείο της Θείας Εξομολογήσεως! Είναι ο συριγμός που μπορούμε να επικοινωνήσουμε με το Θεό για να γίνουμε πάλι καλά. Η εξομολόγησης, εντούτοις, δεν είναι να στέκεται κάποιος μπροστά από μια εικόνα ή στο σπίτι και να ζητά να επικοινωνήσει με τον Θεό. Είναι ένα μυστήριο που πραγματοποιείται στην εκκλησία (εκτός ανάγκης) παρουσία του ιερέα. Είναι ένα φάρμακο για τη θεραπεία της ψυχής και του σώματος. Πλένει όλες τις αμαρτίες μας με τον ίδιο τρόπο που ξεπλύνει το Μυστήριο του Βαπτίσματος. Το μόνο που χρειάζεται για τη εξομολόγηση είναι μια «συντετριμμένη καρδιά» με θάρρος που έχει να αναγνωρίσει τα λάθη της ζωής και ζητά τη συγχώρεση του Θεού. Είναι τόσο εύκολο και απλό, αλλά φαίνεται τόσο δύσκολο για τη πραγματοποίηση του. Αγαπητοί μοι, καθώς ζούμε στις στιγμές της Σαρακοστής ας μην αφήσουμε τίποτα εμπόδιο να σταθεί μεταξύ εμάς και του Θεού. Σας προσκαλώ ν ανοίξετε επικοινωνία μέσω του μυστηρίου της Θείας Εξομολόγησης με μια «συντετριμμένη καρδιά», και έτσι θα γιορτάσετε όλοι την ένδοξο του Ανάσταση, κράζοντας το «Ωσαννά εν τοις Υψίστοις!» Είθε με τις ικεσίες της Αγίας Μαρκέλλας, η ευλογία του Κυρίου να επισκιάζει εσάς και τη οικογένεια σας με ειρήνη, ψυχική πρώτα και σωματική, όπως τη θεραπεία που έλαβε ο Παράλυτος του Αγίου Ευαγγελίου. Once again under the direction of Joanna Georgatos, we will do storytime in both Greek and English, circle time, arts and crafts to enhance fine motor skills through cutting pasting and drawing, field trips, and park adventures. Mommy and Me is open to all preschool age children ranging from 18 months to 5 years old, and everyone, including grandparents, are welcome to attend. Ευχαριστω, Πρόεδρος του PTA Dear Parents, Page 14 Sunday School News The teachers of St. Markella s Sunday School Program would like to thank all of the parents, children and Godparents, for attending our annual Godparent Sunday Brunch, which was held on Cheesefare Sunday. We would also like to thank all of the parents and families who donated food for the brunch. It was due to your support, generosity and presence that our brunch to honor Godparents and their Godchildren was such a success! We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for sharing this special day with us! On the Sunday of Orthodoxy, we continued the tradition of having our children move in a procession around the church, along with Father Sarantis, the cantors and the altar boys. We know you shared our pride in watching the children, including our littlest ones, (some only 3-4 years old!) as they held an icon and joined the procession, reminding us all of how important the saints and the icons are in our Greek Orthodox religion. Kudos to all of the children for a job well done! In the Sunday School classrooms, we continue to work on a different lesson each Sunday, including various activities, prayers, songs and games. We also try to send home a letter to you, the parents, each week, to inform you of the lesson taught and to encourage you to have conversations at home about the lessons. Please set aside some time to review these lessons and concepts with your child. This can help your child further develop his/her understanding of the concepts we are introducing each Sunday. Each lesson helps him/her move closer to understanding his/her faith and therefore, closer to God. Lastly, as we move on our Journey through Lent, the children will be thinking and writing about their Lenten promises. They will each make a promise to God about some aspect of their life, in which they can improve in some way. We will be discussing the importance of showing God and Jesus our appreciation for the sacrifices they made for us. It is our goal to help them understand that Easter is not supposed to be a commercial holiday, but rather an extremely important religious holiday, on which we remember that God sacrificed His only son for us, and Jesus, His life. Όποιος επιθυμεί να γίνει χορηγός της αίθουσας και επιθυμεί να έχει περισσότερες λεπτομέρειες μπορεί να επικοινωνήσει μαζί μου ή με τον πατέρα Σαράντη. Η δεξίωσης της αίθουσας κατά πάσαν περίπτωση, ήταν θαυμάσια, υπήρχε ένα μεγάλο συναίσθημα, ένα όνειρο πραγματοποιούταν. Αν και, το Εκκλησιαστικό Συμβούλιο και εγώ ελπίζαμε για περισσότερους παρόντες, εντούτοις, ήταν ένα ιστορικό γεγονός για την ενορία μας. Είμαι ευγνώμων σε όλους σας για την παρουσία και για την υποστήριξη σας. Προσδοκώ πολύ και τα «Θυρανοίξια» της εκκλησίας μας, τα οποία με το Κυρίου θέλοντας θα είναι γρήγορα κοντά μας. Επιθυμώ να συγχαρώ το ολόκληρο Ελληνικό σχολείο για το έξοχο πρόγραμμα που παρουσίασαν σε μας για την εθνική εορτή της 25ης Μαρτίου, της ανεξαρτησίας της ημετέρας πατρίδας Ελλάδας. Ζήτω η 25η Μαρτίου! Σύντομα, το Πάσχα θα είναι κοντά μας και πολλοί θα έρθουν να επισκεφτούν την εκκλησία μας. Λόγω των πρόσθετων επισκεπτών που θα έχουμε παρακαλώ να θυμάστε την οργάνωση στάθμευση αυτοκίνητων για την ασφάλεια όλων. Παρακαλώ να σταθμεύετε με τέτοιο τρόπο ώστε ότι το όχημά σας να μην εμποδίζει τα άλλα αυτοκίνητα, και περισσότερο να υπάρχει ευρύχωρος για τα οχήματα έκτακτης ανάγκης να περάσουν χωρίς δυσκολία, πρέπει να υπάρχει διέξοδος κυκλοφορία. Παρακαλώ σας υπενθυμίζω ότι η αστυνομία θα ελέγχει το χώρο της στάθμευσής. Ξέρω ότι θα βασιστώ σε σας ότι δεν θα έχουμε αρνητικά γεγονότα. Σας ευχαριστούμε εκ των προτέρων. Τέλος, επιθυμώ να σας υπενθυμίσω ότι προετοιμαζόμαστε για το φεστιβάλ μας που θα λάβει χώραν τη Πέμπτη, 23η Μαΐου έως τη Δευτέρα, 26η Μαΐου. Page 13 It is with most respect that I am communicating with you through this bulletin, so I may convey to all of you my sincere best wishes, as we continue to live the period of Lent. As president of our Parish, it is always my responsibility not only to see that all things go well and with progress in our community, but also to convey to you the progress of our church of St. Markella. Recently, on March 9, 2013, we celebrated the Grand Opening of our social hall, for witch the Parish Council is receptive to the idea of an individual or a family sponsoring the social hall, such as The (sponsor s name) Social Hall. Anyone who wishes to become a sponsor and wishes to have more informative details may communicate with me or with Fr. Sarantis. In any event, it was a splendid time, a great feeling, a dream come true. Although, the Parish Council and I were hoping for more of you to be present, nevertheless, it was a historic event, to see that part of our project is finally done. I am grateful to all of you for the presence and for your commitment. I intensely anticipate to the Grand Opening of our church, which with God as the overseer will be upon us in no time. I wish to congratulate the entire Greek School for the super program they presented to us for the March 25th, Greek Independence Day celebration. Soon, Easter will be upon us, and many will come to visit our church. Due to the extra visitors that we will have, I kindly request that you remember the Parking Rules setup for the safety of all. Please remember to park in a way that your vehicle will not block other cars or making impossible for emergency vehicles to pass though as a two way traffic. 9 THE AGIASMA APRIL-MAY 2013 VOL. 13, ISSUE 03 THE AGIASMA APRIL-MAY 2013 VOL. 13, ISSUE 03 ΕΘΙΜΑ ΛΑΖΑΡΟΣΑΒΒΑΤΟΥ-ΚΥΡΙΑΚΗΣ ΒΑΪΩΝ Ενδιαφέρον παρουσιάζουν και τα έθιμα του Λαζαροσάββατου καθώς και της Κυριακής των Βαΐων στους Προμάχους και τη Σωσάνδρα, μια και οι μέρες αυτές αποτελούν προανάκρουσμα της Λαμπρής. Το Σάββατο του Λαζάρου είναι ένα «νεκρολατρευτικό πανηγύρι» για τον ελληνικό λαό, καθώς και για όλους τους Χριστιανούς, γιατί φέρνει στη μνήμη τους την Ανάσταση του Λαζάρου, του φίλου του Χριστού. Χαρακτηριστικά είναι τα κάλαντα που τραγουδούσαν για το Λάζαρο οι χωρικοί, ανήμποροι να συμφιλιωθούν με την ιδέα του θανάτου: «Σήκω Λάζαρε και μην κοιμάσαι». Την ημέρα αυτή ήταν έντονη η ανάμνηση των «οικείων νεκρών» στον κάθε χριστιανό, μια ανάμνηση που δικαιολογούσε την επίσκεψη στα νεκροταφεία. Το πρωί της Κυριακής των Βαΐων, ημέρα λήξης της Σαρακοστής, οι κάτοικοι των Προμάχων πήγαιναν στην εκκλησία με κλαδιά ελιάς ή δάφνης, τα οποία ευλογούσε ο παπάς και στη συνέχεια τα μοίραζε στους πιστούς. Το έθιμο, που ευτυχώς επιβιώνει μέχρι τις μέρες μας, θυμίζει την υποδοχή του Χριστού με κλαδιά βάγιας, από το λαό των Ιεροσολύμων. Στη Σωσάνδρα το Σάββατο του Λαζάρου οι γυναίκες πήγαιναν στην εκκλησία με λουλούδια. Αυτά τα μοίραζε ο παπάς την Κυριακή των Βαΐων στους παραβρισκόμενους. Τα κορίτσια καλοντυμένα και κρατώντας καλάθια γυρνούσαν στα σπίτια και επειδή η Εκκλησία τη μέρα αυτή επιτρέπει το ψάρι, τραγουδούσαν τα παρακάτω κάλαντα: «Βάγια, βάγια των βαγιών, τρώνε ψάρι και κολιό, και την άλλη Κυριακή τρώνε το ψημένο αρνί». Στη Σωσάνδρα τα κορίτσια μάζευαν στα καλάθια αλεύρι, ψάρια και κρεμμύδια, τα οποία πήγαιναν σε μια χήρα να τα μαγειρέψει. Επειδή το σπίτι της χήρας ήταν καθαρό, της έψελναν ευχές. Γύριζαν μετά το χωριό και μάζευαν, τώρα πια, αυγά για το Πάσχα. Στο μεταξύ η χήρα ζύμωνε το ψωμί και τηγάνιζε τα ψάρια που θα έτρωγαν το μεσημέρι οι κοπέλες. Page 12 ΕΘΙΜΑ ΜΕΓΑΛΗΣ ΕΒΔΟΜΑΔΑΣ-ΠΑΣΧΑ Από τη Σωσάνδρα, στους Προμάχους και από παντού! Ημέρες πένθους για τα πάθη του Χριστού είναι για τους Χριστιανούς οι ημέρες της μεγάλης Εβδομάδας, της «Εβδομάδας των Παθών». Παλαιότερα μάλιστα ακόμη και από τις καθημερινές εκδηλώσεις των Προμαχιωτών και των κατοίκων της Σωσάνδρας απουσίαζε κάθε νότα χαράς. Οι άνθρωποι νήστευαν και απέφευγαν να κάνουν πολλές δουλειές. Το ασβέστωμα του σπιτιού φρόντιζαν να γίνεται πριν τη Μεγάλη Εβδομάδα. Το βράδυ της Μεγάλης Δευτέρας εκκλησιάζονταν με ευλάβεια οι πιστοί, ενώ το βράδυ της Μεγάλης Τρίτης, που ψέλνονταν ο «Νυμφίος», ακούγονταν και το συγκινητικό τροπάριο της Κασσιανής, ένα από τα δημοφιλέστερα και από τα μεταγλωττισμένα στις περισσότερες γλώσσες τροπάρια της Βυζαντινής Υμνογραφίας. Το πρωί της Μεγάλης Τετάρτης πολλοί μεταλάμβαναν. Μέχρι το βράδυ πιστοί και από τα δύο χωριά νήστευαν ακόμη και από ψωμί και από νερό. Μόνο όταν άκουγαν την καμπάνα έτρωγαν κάτι και πήγαιναν στην Εκκλησία. Στους Προμάχους οι περισσότερες νοικοκυρές -τουλάχιστον πιο παλιά- έβαφαν τα αυγά τη Μεγάλη Τετάρτη, οπότε έψηναν και τα τσουρέκια. Το τσουρέκι καθιερώθηκε σαν εξέλιξη του πασχαλινού ψωμιού που έφτιαχναν παλιότερα. Κάποιες άφηναν αυτές τις δουλειές για το πρωί της Μεγάλης Παρασκευής ενώ στη Σωσάνδρα έβαφαν και βάφουν τα αυγά το πρωί της Μεγάλης Πέμπτης. Αξιοσημείωτο είναι ότι το αυγό και στα χριστιανικά χρόνια συμβολίζει την «ανανέωση της ζωής», ενώ το κόκκινο χρώμα τους, χαρούμενο και ξορκιστικό συγχρόνως, οφείλεται στο αίμα του «εβραϊκού προβάτου» ή στο αίμα του Χριστού. Οι οικογένειες που πενθούσαν δεν έβαφαν αυγά, ενώ κάποιοι τα έβαφαν με φλούδες από κρεμμύδι. Τα «Δώδεκα Ευαγγέλια» άκουγαν ευλαβικά το βράδυ της Μεγάλης Πέμπτης οι χωρικοί. Στη συνέχεια διανυκτέρευαν στην εκκλησία κάποιες μαυροφορεμένες γυναίκες. Αυτές έλεγαν μοιρολόγια για το Χριστό και άφηναν κάποιο ρούχο ή κόσμημα κοντά σε μια εικόνα, για να «αγιαστεί». Το πρωί το φορούσαν πάλι. Αυτό συνηθίζεται και σήμερα σε διάφορα μέρη της Ελλάδας. Το πρωί της Μεγάλης Παρασκευής οι γυναίκες στόλιζαν τον Επιτάφιο. Οι πιστοί μέχρι το απόγευμα Τον προσκυνούσαν και τοποθετούσε ο καθένας πάνω του «ό,τι είχε ευχαρίστηση», ένα κόκκινο αυγό, ένα ζευγάρι κάλτσες ή χρήματα. Επειδή πρόκειται για την πιο ιερή μέρα της εβδομάδας αυτής, σταματούσε κάθε δουλειά μέσα στο σπίτι, όπως το πλύσιμο, το ράψιμο, το κέντημα. Μια και το πένθος της ημέρας ήταν βαρύ οι γυναίκες δε μαγείρευαν αυτό το μεσημέρι. Σαν αναπαράσταση της κηδείας του Χριστού, γινόταν το βράδυ η περιφορά του Επιταφίου στους δρόμους του κάθε χωριού. Η πένθιμη ατμόσφαιρα της ημέρας δικαιολογούσε και τη θύμηση των νεκρών καθώς και την επίσκεψη στα νεκροταφεία. Το εγκώμιο της Παναγίας προς το Χριστό «ώ γλυκύ μου έαρ...», που ακουγόταν το βράδυ αυτό, συγκινούσε βαθύτατα, καθώς παραπέμπει στο μοιρολόι κάθε χαροκαμένης μάνας. Μαυροφορεμένες κοπέλες, που θυμίζουν τις «Μυροφόρες» του Χριστού, «έραιναν» τον επιτάφιο με ροδοπέταλα από το ψάθινο καλάθι τους. Όσοι επέστρεφαν από την εκκλησία έπαιρναν κάποιο λουλούδι, αφού περνούσαν κάτω από τον επιτάφιο. Οι νοικοκυρές ετοίμαζαν τη μαγειρίτσα το πρωί του Μεγάλου Σαββάτου και οι άνδρες έσφαζαν το αρνί που θα σούβλιζαν την Κυριακή. Λίγο πριν τα μεσάνυχτα πήγαιναν οι άνθρωποι στην Εκκλησία. Το «ιερό φως» έπαιρνε καθένας από τη λαμπάδα αυτού που νόμιζε ότι θα του φέρει τύχη. Ήταν η νύχτα της Ανάστασης του Χριστού. «Χριστός Ανέστη», έψελνε ο ιερέας και αυτό το χαρμόσυνο μήνυμα έφερνε χαρά, αγάπη και συμφιλίωση. Οι άνθρωποι αντάλλαζαν ευχές και φιλιά και τσούγκριζαν αυγά. Το αυγό του τυχερού έμενε στο εικονοστάσι μέχρι το επόμενο Πάσχα. Κάθε οικογένεια φρόντιζε να «σταυρώσει» με το άγιο φως μιας λαμπάδας την εξώπορτα του σπιτιού της τρεις φορές και να ανάψει το καντήλι. Έπειτα έτρωγε όλη η οικογένεια τη μαγειρίτσα μετά τη νηστεία που είχε προηγηθεί. Το πρωί της Κυριακής εκκλησιάζονταν οι Χριστιανοί και κάποιοι μεταλάμβαναν. Το αρνί το σούβλιζαν σε ατμόσφαιρα έντονης χαράς. «Λαμπρή εορτή και πανήγυρις» λέγονταν από το λαό η ημέρα του Πάσχα και γι' αυτό έχει καθιερωθεί να λέγεται «Λαμπρή». Ακολουθούσε το πλούσιο γεύμα, που συνοδεύονταν από κρασί ή τσίπουρο. Κάποιες γιαγιάδες Προμαχιώτισσες θυμούνται ότι πολλοί παντρεμένοι φορούσαν τα ρούχα του γάμου τους και οι ελεύθεροι ρούχα με κυρίαρχο το άσπρο χρώμα, επειδή όλα ήταν γιορτινά. Το βράδυ χόρευαν στην πλατεία των χωριών. Ανανεωμένοι από τις γιορτές του Πάσχα, οι χωρικοί επιδίδονταν με περισσότερη δύναμη και μεράκι στη βιοπάλη. Παρήγορο είναι ότι τα περισσότερα πασχαλινά έθιμα εξακολουθούν να τηρούνται τόσο στη Σωσάνδρα όσο και στους Προμάχους. Page 9
