Dimon Proistamenos 2187 West 14th Street, Cleveland, OH Sunday, September 23, st Sunday of Luke Falling Asleep of St. John the Theologian Feast Day: September 26 John was the son of Zebedee the fisherman and Salome the daughter of Joseph, the betrothed of the Holy Theotokos. Called by the Lord Jesus, John immediately left his father and his fishermen s nets and, with his brother James, followed Christ. From then on, he was not separated from his Lord until the end. With Peter and James, he was present at the raising of Jairus s daughter and the Transfiguration of the Lord. At the Last Supper, he inclined his head on Jesus breast. When all the other apostles had abandoned the crucified Lord, John and the Holy Mother of God remained beneath the Cross. In obedience to the Lord, he was as a son to the Holy Virgin Mary, and carefully served and watched over her until her Dormition. After her Dormition, John took his disciple Prochorus to preach the Gospel in Asia Minor. He lived and labored mostly in Ephesus. By his inspired preaching and miracles he converted many to Christianity and shook paganism to its foundation. The embittered pagans bound him and sent him to Rome, to face Emperor Dometian. Dometian had him tortured and flogged, but neither the bitterest poison he was given to drink, nor the boiling oil into which he was thrown, did him any harm. This terrified the emperor and, thinking him immortal, Dometian sent him into exile to the island of Patmos. There St. John converted many to Christianity by words and miracles, and confirmed well the Church of God. He also wrote his Gospel and Revelation on Patmos. In the time of Emperor Nero, who granted freedom to all prisoners, John returned to Ephesus, where he lived for some time, confirming the work he had begun earlier. He was over one hundred years old when he went to the Lord. When his disciples later opened his grave, they did not find his body. On May 8 of every year, a fine dust, fragrant and healing, rose from his grave. After a long, laborious and fruitful life on earth, this beloved disciple of Christ, a true pillar of the Church, took up his habitation in the joy of His Lord. He was called Theologian because he loftily expounded in his Gospel the theology of the inexpressible and eternal birth of the Son and Word of God the Father. It is for this cause that an eagle-a symbol of the Holy Spirit, as Saint Irenaeus says-is depicted in his icon, for this was one of the four symbolic living creatures that the Prophet Ezekiel saw (Ezek. 1:10). Psalm 63.11,1 The righteous shall rejoice in the Lord. Verse: Oh God, hear my cry. The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 4:22-27 Προκείμενον. Ήχος βαρύς. ΨΑΛΜΟΙ 63.11,1 Εὐφρανθήσεται δίκαιος ἐν Κυρίῳ. Στίχ. Εἰσάκουσον, ὁ Θεός, τῆς φωνῆς μου. Πρὸς Γαλάτας 4:22-27 τὸ ἀνάγνωσμα είναι απο Brethren, Abraham had two sons, one by a slave and one by a free woman. But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh, the son of the free woman through promise. Now this is an allegory: these women are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery; she is Hagar. Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia; she corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother. For it is written, "Rejoice, O barren one who does not bear; break forth and shout, you who are not in travail; for the children of the desolate one are many more than the children of her that is married." 3 Gospel 1st Sunday of Luke The Gospel According to Luke 5:1-11 At that time, as Jesus was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, he saw two boats by the lake; but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon's, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. And when he had ceased speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch." And Simon answered, "Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets." And when they had done this, they enclosed a great shoal of fish; and as their nets were breaking, they beckoned to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord." For he was astonished, and all who were with him, at the catch of fish which they had taken; and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid; henceforth you will be catching men." And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him. Διό καί ἡμεῖς σύν αὐτῷ, τῇ Θεοτόκῳ βοήσωμεν Χαῖρε Κεχαριτωμένη, ὁ Κύριος μετά σοῦ. To-day is the crown of our Salvation and the manifestation of the Eternal Mystery. The Son of God becometh the son of the Virgin, and Gabriel announceth the good tidings of grace. Wherefore let us also with him cry to the Mother of God: Hail! O protection of the unashamable, mediation to the Creator immovable, despise not, the pleading voices of those in sin, but hasten O good one, to the help of all of us, who in faith cry out to you: speed up your intercession, and press on your supplication, O Theotokos who always protect, all those who honor you. 4

8 Thank you, God Thank you, God, that I can see. There are thousands who cannot see. For them, there is no sunrise or sunset; no autumn colors, no rainbow-tinted flowers, no movies, no delights of the eye. Thank you, God, that I can hear. There are thousands who cannot hear the voice of their own mother, nor the singing of the birds, nor the radio, nor the laughter of children. Thank you, God, that I can walk. How brave are those who live life without the use of their legs and are confined to a wheelchair, or even paralyzed from the waist down. Thank you, God, that I can work. Look at the many who can do nothing with brain or brawn or hands. There are so many who have been laid off due to the economy and the fear of uncertain times. Thank you, God, that I have something to eat. Millions as good as I, maybe even better, have little or nothing to eat. Thousands are dying of hunger, while I never miss a meal and enjoy the comforts of my home and family. Thank you, God, for my Orthodox Faith, which teaches me to be thankful and to see Your will in all that I do each day. Thank you, God, for the freedom to worship You as You wish to be worshipped. Thank you, God, for our beautiful Church and our comfortable home. Thank you, God, for the privilege of attending the Divine Liturgy every Sunday and on special Feast Days. Thank you, God, for permitting me to confess my sins and receive Your Divine Gifts, the body and Blood of Your only Begotten Son and our Lord Jesus Christ. Dear Parents, Serving in God s Altar is indeed an honor. The Altar is called the Holy of Holies so this is a very sacred place. As Altar boys they will be assisting Fr. Dean, Metropolitan Savas, and any visiting Clergy during Divine Services. The participation of your young boys is invaluable and very important to the smooth practice of the Holy services. Not only do they have a wonderful opportunity to serve the Church, but they are also presented with a unique experience to see the services from a different perspective. This is a very serious commitment and your boys should enter the Altar with faith and the upmost respect. Scripture Readings concerning the Altar. Only fear the Lord, and serve Him in truth with all your heart, for you know what great things He has done for you. 1 Samuel 12:24 If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. 13 It is the practice of our Church to give the name of a Saint to the new born child. By assuming the name of a Saint, we not only honor and express our gratitude to a Holy Person for his exceptional contribution to the Orthodox Faith, but provide the new Christian with an example worthy of emulation. The Saint then becomes the Patron of the child protecting it from all danger. Through his prayers, God will grant the child the necessary illumination to become a zealous member of the Church and an ardent follower of Christ.
