The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 6:11-18 Brethren, see with what large letters I am writing to you with my own hand. It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh that would compel you to be circumcised, and only in order that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. For even those who receive circumcision do not themselves keep the law, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may glory in your flesh. But far be it from me to glory except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died and was buried; and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes, and saw Abraham far off and Lazaros in his bosom. And he called out, 'Father Abraham, have mercy upon me, and send Lazaros to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in anguish in this flame.' But Abraham said, 'Son, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazaros in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. A primary goal of Stewardship is to promote spiritual growth and strengthen faith. 6 Of the gifts of God, treasure is mostly talked about in the bible than of time and talent. It is likely to be the most misused. Like the others we must first understand that like time and talent, it is a gift from God and should be used appropriately. If misused, it can cause many problems for us. Seems like so many of us are trying to get more and more of it for selfish reasons. Perhaps we think that if we had lots of money, we would be happy because we would not worry about it anymore. Not realizing having a lot of treasure brings different kinds of problems. We see people with riches and see how happy they are; are they really all that happy inside? I bet many are very unhappy; some of which came to money lost all their friends. Jesus warns us specifically about love of money. He instructs us to share what we have with others in order to avoid letting the accumulation of it consume us. In a way, maybe the reason we do not have so many treasures on earth is because God is protecting us from it. In other words, we should be happy with the gifts we are given and happy to give to others in need as well. Let us also recall the most painful lesson of greed. Judas had betrayed Jesus over greed. He loved money over Christ that led him to torment and death. Christ tried to save him but it was by his own choice he decided which master he was to serve. We can never forget that God comes first in our lives over all else. God has always asked we give him the first fruits of our labor, which is the best of the reward for our hard work. We must get into this mindset. God should get this before we pay our other debtors or even ourselves. It s a difficult task because we have the government and even our bills get automatically taken out of our paychecks and we spend what we have left over. Can we grow in our discipline to give to God first out of our budgets again? 6

9 It is truly our most precious commodity. Even more that money; once it is spent it is gone and cannot be given back. Yet, everyone spends it differently. Some people waste it, some cannot get enough of it, and others wonder what happened to it. We don t know when our time is going to run out. We only know for sure is the moment we have right now. Because our time is precious, we need to make sure we use it wisely. Once wasted, that time is gone forever. We should reflect on our time and make sure we are using properly or for the glorification of God. We should be removing time wasters from our lives. For example, are we spending too much time on entertainment and not enough with our families or our community? Maybe we put off things for another time. Is there a project you put off because it is going to be difficult? Broken relationships have a terrible effect. Instead of fixing broken relationships have we put them off for another time or put the responsibility on someone else instead of taking that moment to mend the relationship. This also includes our relationship with God. Maybe we put of reconciling because we didn t want to own up to our own mistakes. Every moment we take not doing fruitful things including mending relationships is wasted time. Time spend not developing our own talents is wasting time. Time spent not fixing our own lives is wasting time. What are we waiting for? The right moment? For others to act? Other things to materialize? By putting it off for another day and yet another only guarantees it may never get done. What we do today matters. Did we help others in need? Did we reach out to family and friends? Did we visit the sick or elderly? Did we mend our relationships with others? Did we work on fixing our own problems? We need to do them now, not tomorrow, not next week, or next month or next year even. Now while we still have time.
