The guest speaker will be Father John Oliver of St. Elizabeth Orthodox Christian Church in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and his theme is Anxiety, Despondency, Despair: Helping Orthodox Women Cope. All are invited to attend, and registration forms are available in the Cathedral office. Presvytera Harriet will be attending the retreat. If you are interested in carpooling, contact her at DAUGHTERS OF PENELOPE - GREEK PASTRY SALE Orders for the Daughters of Penelope Holiday Greek Pastry Sale are due next Monday, November 12, Pastries pick up will be on Sunday, December 2, 2018, between 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm. Join the Daughters for daytime Pastry Workshops on November 6, 7, 27, 28, and 29 from 10:00 am to 2:30 pm at the Hellenic Cultural Center. Also, there will be Tuesday evening workshops on November 6 and 27 from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm. HOLY TRINITY YOUTH SOCCER The HTC Youth Soccer program meets each Friday at 6:00 pm with the last fall session scheduled for Friday, November 16. PHILOPTOCHOS PHILOPTOCHOS SUNDAY Today, Philoptochos is sponsoring an artoclasia in honor of its patron saints, Cosmas and Damianos. A special tray will be passed to benefit the Patriarchate projects. Following church services members will host a reception for the community in the Coffee Room. Special thanks to Presvytera Harriet Wilson for chairing the reception, Debbie Funti for the floral arrangement, Connie Tiliakos for preparing the arto, and all that contributed to the table. Everyone is invited to join Philoptochos in the Coffee Room for refreshments. PHILOPTOCHOS THANKSGIVING PROJECT Please visit the table in the Coffee Room that is set up for donations, which will provide Thanksgiving gifts to needy families identified by Father George. Philoptochos members are collecting monetary donations, as well as grocery gift cards. All donations are appreciated. These will make the Thanksgiving holiday a happier one for these families. Message from Father George RICH MAN & LAZARUS Today s Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus reminds us that Lazarus suffered greatly in his lifetime, yet the promise was given to him and to us all that even though we are facing adversity, whether it be poverty, uncertainty, sickness, loneliness, attacks on our reputation, abandonment, or whatever, God is there for us. The Grace of God is our Salvation. Our Faith in Jesus Christ as our Savior moves us to put our Faith to work in offering ourselves and our talents. To enjoy the Salvation of the Kingdom of God we are not called to be like the poor, sick, and hungry Lazarus, though he displayed great endurance and patience through his suffering. Rather, we are called NOT to be like the rich man. Salvation is the goal of every Christian. We may attain that goal by enduring the narrow path, not by constantly sliding through life on the easy, wide path. The examples set forth by our Lord in the form of parables are illustrations to teach how to live a life in Christ and how to live in righteousness. These are little reminders of what to do and what not to do. As in our Spiritual journey, it is our choice to accept God s rules of life or to reject them as we have been blessed with the ability to follow our own free will. Will we choose to do the blessed work of the Lord or not? Will we endeavor to live a life in Christ or a life of selfishness? The Gospel account ends when the rich man pleads to Abraham to allow him to return to his family to warn them to change their ways, to live for God and their fellow human beings. But, this request was not honored. Abraham said to him, "If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead." Gospel lessons are lessons of life, love, and hope. By living our life for Jesus as we follow His teachings and His commandments, we will be reaching out to the people like Lazarus, who are still created in the image of God. In our daily lives do we see Lazarus? Is he near your office? Is he at your school? Is he in the next pew right now? Our free will determines how we respond. STEWARDSHIP 2018 The year is quickly coming to an end, and Stewardship Chairperson Nicholas Bouzon reminds everyone that there are still a number of people who have not made their 2018 pledge to Holy Trinity Cathedral. If you are among this number, please do not wait to the last minute or worse yet, not make a pledge for the current year. Your Church needs your support! THE EPISTLE Ephesians 2:4-10 O Lord, save Your people, and bless Your inheritance. To You, O Lord, I cry; O my God. Brethren, God who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with him, and made us sit with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God: not because of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. THE GOSPEL Luke 16:19-31 The Lord said, "There was a rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazaros, full of sores, who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man's table; moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died and was buried; and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes, and saw Abraham far off and Lazaros in his bosom. And he called out, 'Father Abraham, have mercy upon me, and send Lazaros to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in anguish in this flame.' But Abraham said, 'Son, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazaros in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.' And he said, 'Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father's house, for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.' But Abraham said, 'They have Moses, and the prophets; let them hear them.' And he said, 'No, father Abraham; but if some one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.' He said to them, 'If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced if some one should rise from the dead.'"
