3 Dearly Beloved, Pastor s Message In his beautiful and rich homily on the Feast of the Nativity of the Lord, Saint Gregory the Theologian advises us: Run after the star, and bring gifts with magi, gold, and frankincense and myrrh, as to a king and a God.... With the shepherds give glory, with the angels sing hymns, with the archangels dance. Let there be a common celebration of the heavenly and earthly powers. (Oration 18). In this one statement we can find guidance from the past that is still meaningful for our celebration of the Birth of Christ today. In this season, amid all the preparations, we run after many things, searching for the right decorations, searching for that perfect gift in store after store. The perfect gift has already been delivered: Jesus Christ, Son of God and Son of the Virgin Mary. The catalogs promise happiness in things but ultimately the things we will open will be put away and eventually be replaced by newer things in our lives. The gifts that bring happiness are the gifts of faith and family. The advertisements urge us to consume as a means to show our joy. The Church urges us to askesis, through fasting and abstaining from superfluous past-times and things, as the way to prepare ourselves to receive that perfect gift Christ in the season and in the Holy Eucharist. This is a time for joy, filled with light and celebrations, but search for the proper measure in all these. Let us be like the Magi, who ran after the star and found the King, the Messiah, the Savior of us all. The shepherds, at the urging and hymns of angels, found a child and worshiped Him, lying in a manger. In our celebrations of the Feast, we must dedicate time for prayer and worship by participating in the liturgical and sacramental life of the Church, but also in our daily lives. Sing the hymns of the Church, the hymns of the angels and the hymns of the season. When you attend the Divine Services of this season, lift your voices with the angels and praise God, for to us there has been born, a little child, God before all ages. (Kontakion of Christmas, Saint Romanos the Melodist) This praise is offered most fully in the congregations, in the shared celebration of the Body of Christ which is the Church. Be sure this year to join with others in your celebration, as the Church, as a family, and as a community. Welcome all to your celebrations; in this season there can be no strangers. There must always be room at the inn. In this Nativity season, reach out to the lonely and outcast, and in this act of brotherhood, you will see Christ Himself. As Saint Paul wrote about Jesus He emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. (Philippians 2:7) For the Feast of the Nativity of our Lord is more than a celebration, more than a festival. It is a profound statement of our faith in the Most High God Who was and continues to be at work in our world. In the Christmas Gospels, we hear how Christ is to be called Emmanuel meaning God with us (Matthew 1:23). In all times and places, in all eras of history, the Good News of the Incarnation is to hear that God is with us, that He has not abandoned us, especially today, and that He continually loves and cares for us all. For all these reasons, my beloved, we must be like the Magi and Shepherds who sought out the newborn Christ, and offer our gifts and glory to God in the highest. 4 Philoptochos Vasilopita Cutting January 12, 2014 Bring in your Vasilopita to Church on Sunday, January 12, 2014 and participate in our tradition of cutting the Vasilopita with everyone at our Parish! Donations received that day will be sent to Saint Basil Academy in Garrison, New York. Saint Basil Academy is the only Greek Orthodox licensed residential child-care institution for Orthodox children in America. 5 Greek Column by Voula Michail Η ΙΣΤΟΡΙΑ ΤΗΣ ΒΑΣΙΛΟΠΙΤΑΣ ΤΗΣ ΠΡΩΤΟΧΡΟΝΙΑΣ Ή ΓΙΑΤΙ ΦΤΙΑΧΝΟΥΜΕ ΒΑΣΙΛΟΠΙΤΕΣ ΤΗΝ ΠΡΩΤΟΧΡΟΝΙΑ Μια ιστορία που συνέβηκε πριν από εκατοντάδες χρόνια, πριν από 1500 χρόνια περίπου, στην πόλη Καισάρεια της Καππαδοκίας, στη Μικρά Ασία. Ο Μέγας Βασίλειος ήταν δεσπότης της Καισάρειας και ζούσε αρμονικά με τους συνανθρώπους του, με αγάπη, κατανόηση και αλληλοβοήθεια. Κάποια μέρα όμως, ένας αχόρταγος στρατηγός - τύραννος της περιοχής, ζήτησε να του δοθούν όλοι οι θησαυροί της πόλης της Καισάρειας, αλλιώς θα πολιορκούσε την πόλη για να την κατακτήσει και να την λεηλατήσει. Ο Μέγας Βασίλειος ολόκληρη τη νύχτα προσευχόταν να σώσει ο Θεός την πόλη. Ξημέρωσε η νέα μέρα και ο στρατηγός αποφασισμένος με το στρατό του περικύκλωσε αμέσως την Καισάρεια. Μπήκε με την ακολουθία του και ζήτησε να δει το Δεσπότη, ο οποίος βρισκόταν στο ναό και προσευχόταν. Με θράσος και θυμό ο αδίστακτος στρατηγός απαίτησε το χρυσάφι της πόλης καθώς και ότι άλλο πολύτιμο υπήρχε στην πόλη. Ο Μέγας Βασίλειος απάντησε ότι οι άθρωποι της πόλης του δεν είχαν τίποτε άλλο πέρα από πείνα και φτώχια, δεν είχαν να δώσουν τίποτε αξιόλογο στον άρπαγα στρατηγό. Ο στρατηγός με το που άκουσε αυτά τα λόγια θύμωσε ακόμα περισσότερο και άρχισε να απειλεί τον Μέγα Βασίλειο ότι θα τον εξορίσει πολύ μακρυά από την πατρίδα του ή κι ακόμη μπορεί να τον σκοτώσει. Οι χριστιανοί της Καισάρειας αγαπούσαν πολύ το Δεσπότη τους και θέλησαν να τον βοηθήσουν. Μάζεψαν λοιπόν από τα σπίτια τους ότι χρυσαφικά είχαν και του τα πρόσφεραν, ώστε δίνοντάς τα στο σκληρό στρατηγό να σωθούν. Στο μεταξύ ο ανυπόμονος στρατηγός κόντευε να σκάσει από το κακό του. Διέταξε αμέσως το στρατό του να επιτεθεί στο φτωχό λαό της πόλης. Ο Δεσπότης, ο Μέγας Βασίλειος, που ήθελε να προστατέψει την πόλη του προσευχήθηκε και μετά παρουσίασε στο στρατηγό ότι χρυσαφικά είχε μαζέψει μέσα σε ένα σεντούκι. Τη στιγμή όμως που ο στρατηγός πήγε να ανοίξει το σεντούκι και να αρπάξει τους θησαυρούς, με το που ακούμπησε τα χέρια του πάνω στα χρυσαφικά, έγινε το θαύμα! Όλοι οι συγκεντρωμένοι είδαν μια λάμψη και αμέσως μετά έναν λαμπρό καβαλάρη να ορμάει με το στρατό του επάνω στον σκληρό στρατηγό και τους δικούς του. Σε ελάχιστο χρόνο ο κακός στρατηγός και οι δικοί του αφανίστηκαν.ο λαμπρός καβαλάρης ήταν ο Άγιος Μερκούριος και στρατιώτες του οι άγγελοι. Έτσι σώθηκε η πόλη της Καισάρειας. Τότε όμως, ο δεσπότης της, ο Μέγας Βασίλειος, βρέθηκε σε δύσκολη θέση! Θα έπρεπε να μοιράσει τα χρυσαφικά στους κατοίκους της πόλης και η μοιρασιά να είναι δίκαιη, δηλαδή να πάρει ο καθένας ό,τι ήταν δικό του. Αυτό ήταν πολύ δύσκολο.προσευχήθηκε λοιπόν ο Μέγας Βασίλειος και ο Θεός τον φώτισε τι να κάνει. Κάλεσε τους διακόνους και τους βοηθούς του και τους είπε να ζυμώσουν ψωμάκια, όπου μέσα στο καθένα ψωμάκι θα έβαζαν και λίγα χρυσαφικά. Όταν αυτά ετοιμάστηκαν, τα μοίρασε σαν ευλογία στους κατοίκους της πόλης της Καισάρειας. Στην αρχή όλοι παραξενεύτηκαν, μα η έκπληξή τους ήταν ακόμη μεγαλύτερη όταν κάθε οικογένεια έκοβε το ψωμάκι αυτό κι έβρισκε μέσα τα χρυσαφικά της. Ήταν λοιπόν ένα ξεχωριστό ψωμάκι, η βασιλόπιτα. Έφερνε στους ανθρώπους χαρά κι ευλογία μαζί. Από τότε φτιάχνουμε κι εμείς τη βασιλόπιτα με το φλουρί μέσα, την πρώτη μέρα του χρόνου, τη μέρα του Αγίου Βασιλείου. Η βασιλόπιτα, αγιοβασιλιάτικο έθιμο πολλών αιώνων, μεταφέρεται από γενιά σε γενιά, για να μας θυμίζει την αγάπη και την καλοσύνη αυτού του 'Αγιου ανθρώπου. Page 5

8 Greek Dance & Cultural Arts School AGDCAS had a very successful "Ringing in of the New Year" Celebration. Parents and Grandparents admired the dance groups with much pride. During the Epiphany Lunch our Mikra Asteria will be performing for Bishop Gerasimos and all in attendance. Countdown to FDF has begun. Please go to for more detailed information. Kali Hronia Dina Lioulias, President Greek School Happy New Year, I hope everyone had a nice holiday. Greek School is back in full swing. This year our annual Greek Independence Day celebration will be held on Sunday, March 23, A lent luncheon will be served and all students will be reciting poems. Please come and join us for this very important day. There will be no Greek school on Wednesday, February 12, 2014 since most of our students will be participating in the dance competitions at FDF. In April, there will be no classes on Wednesday the 16th. All students must attend church for Holy Wednesday services. Last day of Greek school and graduation will be held on Wednesday, June 4th, Please look in your Panagia every month for any changes. Have a great year.
