7 T H E D I F F E R E N C E A F E W M I L E S M A K E Because of the prosperity that most of us enjoy, it is difficult to truly understand the basic and fundamental challenges that exist just beyond our borders. Only minutes south of one of California s favorite vacation destinations, you will find Tijuana, Mexico, a city not only of considerable size and history, but of significant human poverty and hardship as well. With a population of over 1.3 million residents, it is sobering to appreciate that nearly half of them live on less than $200 (USD) per month. Even more troubling is the difficulty that families face when finding a permanent home. The cost of land in Mexico can be very expensive ranging from $15,000 to $25,000 (USD) for a meter parcel of land. Once families have saved enough money to pay for the mortgage on their land, they have very little left to construct a secure home. As you drive through the impoverished communities around Tijuana, you will see homes made of old garage doors, wooden pallets, tarps, tires or other materials that were, ironically enough, likely discarded from homes within the United States. Finding the right families to build for is not an easy task. For this reason, we work closely with Mexican Social Services and other local resources to identify potential candidate families. Once selected as a candidate, the family will be carefully interviewed to determine their need based on annual income, family size, overall quality of life, employment and the potential benefit that a home will have on them. After meeting with all of the candidate families, their applications are then compiled and presented to the selection committee. Our goal is to serve those with the greatest need at the time of our evaluation. Since 1988, Project Mexico & St. Innocent Orphanage has been building secure, safe and weather -tight homes for some of the most impoverished families in northern Mexico. Built strictly by volunteer labor, these homes provide families economic security and hope for a brighter future. While serving these families, the volunteers discover that they have been transformed. Through their service to others, they realize that they have received much more than they had given. To date, we have hosted well over 11,000 volunteers on our 16 acre ranch as we continue to humbly bear the burdens of others in the name of Christ.

8 Unity in Harmony and Peace, from the 43rd Biennial Clergy Laity Congress in Nashville You are the voice of Christ in a changing world NASHVILLE, Tenn. The 43rd Biennial Clergy Laity Congress of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America concluded Thursday, July 7, 2016, with the plenary session and the traditional Grand Banquet at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center. A total of 1,197 registered participants were in attendance including 396 delegates to the National Philoptochos Convention. The work of the Congress culminated with Thursday s daylong plenary session, the presentation of the reports and the approval of the budgets for the next two years. The following ministries, departments and committees presented their reports: Stewardship- Outreach and Evangelism, Religious Education, Greek Education, Administration, Finance, Center for Family Care, Office of Inter-Orthodox, Ecumenical & Interfaith Relations, Leadership 100, Youth and Young Adults Ministries, Communications, Hellenic College Holy Cross, Chaplaincy and National Philoptochos. Within the scope of the Administration Committee, three amendments to the Regulations of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America were presented and following extensive discussion were approved. The amendments are on Conflicts Disclosure Policy, Whistle-blower policy and Youth protection. Additionally a Financial Disclosure Amendment to the Uniform Parish Regulations was approved. Several resolutions were adapted by the Congress and included: a resolution proposed by the Order of St. Andrew Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate on Religious Freedom, a resolution regarding Hagia Sophia, that deplores the use of Hagia Sophia for conducting Muslim services, opposes any plans to convert it into a Mosque and calls for it to remain as a museum. Also a resolution on terrorism was adapted which deplores the innocent killing of civilians by terrorists affiliated with radical terrorist groups and condemns those who kill others in the name of religion. In a separate resolution the 43rd Clergy Laity Congress applauds the presence and functioning of the Assembly of Bishops of the United States; calls upon all Orthodox Christians to support the Assembly of Bishops to foster greater unity and coordination of Orthodox Christianity in America; and calls upon all Orthodox Churches in America to work together on the ministries of the Church and serve as a common witness in the secular society of today. Finally, a resolution of thanks was adapted expressing gratitude to His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and all those who contributed to the success of the Congress.

9 43rd NATIONAL CLERGY LAITY CONGRESS Sunday, July 3, 2016 â NASHVILLE, Tenn. Almost a thousand people attended the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy this morning that began the 43rd Biennial Clergy-Laity Congress of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. The Orthros service and Hierarchical Concelebration of the Divine Liturgy were held in the Grand Ole Opry House. His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios Geron of America presided over the Divine Liturgy concelebrating with all the Metropolitans of the Holy Eparchial Synod of the Archdiocese. Taking part in the Liturgy were His Eminence Metropolitan Iakovos of Chicago, His Eminence Metropolitan Methodios of Boston, His Eminence Metropolitan Isaiah of Denver, His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios of Atlanta, His Eminence Metropolitan Nicholas of Detroit (the host Metropolitan of this yearâ s Congress), His Eminence Metropolitan Savas of Pittsburgh, His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos of San Francisco, and His Eminence Metropolitan Evangelos of New Jersey.
