Deception Detection and Emotion Recognition Abilities of Therapists INFORMATION SHEET My name is Alexa Curtis and I am a student at Massey University. I am conducting this research project as a requirement for the completion of the Doctoral Programme in Clinical Psychology. My supervisor for this project is Associate Professor John Podd. Project Description and Invitation This project aims to explore the emotion recognition abilities of Clinical Psychologists and whether they are able to detect deception. The study will also investigate whether these skills can be enhanced by training. The first part of the study involves creating video images of people responding deceptively to emotionally evocative images. These videos will be shown to the psychologists in the second part of the study. You are invited to participate in this research. Who can participate? Participants will be recruited through advertisements on campus. People who are interested can contact the researcher via email or text message. Men and women aged between 18 and 45 years will be eligible to participate. People who have had facial Botox treatment are ineligible to participate. Project Procedures Participants will be shown a range of emotionally evocative slides whilst being video-recorded. Segments of the video will be shown to participants in part 2 of the study. The video images for each participant will be edited and approximately 20 seconds of video per person will be used for part 2 of the study. Participants will be recorded individually in a session lasting between 15-30 minutes. Information Sheet Deception Detection and Emotion Recognition Abilities of Therapists Page 1 of 2
