Mobile innovations expected next 3 years: Functions related to the passenger experience include: Location based services: Services that provide location sensitive advertisements promoting airport or local merchants as well as local information guides (e.g. airport, gates, baggage carousels, etc). Advanced push notifications: Such as providing the passenger with more information about their flight or baggage and selling ancillary services to monetize the mobile channel. Movement tracking: Automatically identifying a passenger s location in the airport for management, operations or customer services improvements. Advanced disruption management : This includes the pushing of alternate flights and the offer of personalized compensation and electronic vouchers for hotels when a flight is cancelled. Social media: Monitoring social media comments and targeting the passenger s physical location to prioritize assistance based on the nature of the issue. Also being considered is the integration of peer reviews during the mobile ticket purchasing process. Mobile is transforming the air travel industry, both from an airline and airport perspective as well as from a passenger perspective. Clearly many more opportunities and new innovations will emerge as this transformation evolves which will both enhance passenger experiences and increase revenues to the industry. Passenger Flow Monitoring As data analytics become more sophisticated the BI trend will increasingly move towards passenger flow monitoring and asset tracking to help drive business outcomes. with some metrics showing that an extra 10 minutes in security lines reduces an average passengers retails spend by 30%. Clearly the trend towards mobile use is probably unstoppable at this point with many airports using apps as alternative payment means (as example paying for parking) and in the medium term as additional revenue generating methods via retail promotions. Mobility solutions to: Mobility Solutions for Air Transportation Improve passenger experience with: Baggage Reconciliation Mobile App: Provide real-time alerts to track their baggage advising passengers when their bag has been loaded on the airplane, and when and from what carousel the bag will be available to be collected upon arrival. Improve productivity of workforce with: Airport Operations Mobile App: Allow mobile workforce to check status and receive proactive alerts while on-duty on the airside. Mobilizing security inspection: Offer security staff ability to conduct the inspection process on a tablet and locate and dispatch the team closest to an incident after it happens. Inventory management app: Allow maintenance staff to scan a bar or QR code for a spare part and check its availability in the inventory and follow the ticket request for that missing part. Mobility: More Strategic, Less Tactical Transforming the Passenger Experience Mobile technology is at the forefront of redefining the future travel experience. Along with passport and driver s license, the mobile phone is the standard accessory for passenger travel. With 70% of passengers carrying a smartphone, it s the ideal medium to engage and process passengers to provide them with information at the right time and location to reduce the stress of travel, and to increase ancillary and non-aeronautical food, beverage and retail - revenues. 88% Airports plan to provide applications for passenger information through mobile by 2015 71% Airlines believe that smart phones will be one of two dominant channels for passenger processing Redefining Airport Operations and Costs Mobility is also set to become an integral part of workforce management and airports operations from check-in to baggage handling to cargo inspection. Mobile workforce solutions can help eliminate paper-based processes and voice-based communications, reduce time to identify a crew closest to an incident, and replace costly technology such as bar code scanners, thereby reducing cost of operations, improving workforce productivity and eliminating operational inefficiencies. The always-connected traveler: How mobile will transform the future of air travel This study classifies advanced functionality into two major categories: 1. Functions related to the passenger experience and 2. Capabilities that take advantage of advanced mobile device or software features. Functions related to the passenger experience include: Location based services-these are services that provide location sensitive advertisements promoting airport or local merchants as well as local information guides (e.g. airport, gates, baggage carousels, etc). Advanced disruption management-this includes the pushing of alternate flights and the offer of personalized compensation and electronic vouchers for hotels when a flight is cancelled. Social media - Monitoring social media comments and targeting the passenger's physical location to prioritize assistance based on the nature of the issue. Also being considered is the integration of peer reviews during the mobile ticket purchasing process. Movement tracking-depending on local cultural and legal restrictions, automatically identifying a passenger's location in the airport. Advanced push notifications-this has two main purposes, providing the passenger with more information about their flight or baggage and selling ancillary services to monetize the mobile channel. Mobile devices are increasingly becoming electronic wallets and sensors to the world around us. Two important advanced mobile device capabilities that will enable new services for airlines are: Mobile payments -The adoption of universal mobile payment systems will allow the passenger to use their phone to pay for goods and services. NFC-The integration of near field communication (NFC) technology into the handset. NFC involves two pieces of hardware. One is an NFC chip in a mobile phone and the other is an NFC reader at a merchant or transportation facility. NFC will allow the passenger to speed through the airport check-in and boarding process. Airport operational use of mobile Mobile technology is also having an impact on airline airport operations. The main areas of impact are the ticket counter and ground and flight operations. At the ticket counters roaming agents using tablet technology will help lessen queue waits. Ground handlers and airport operations staff will continue to improve internal ground and flight operations for baggage processing and pre-flight preparations. Copyright Unisystems 2015
