Ευαγγελισμός της Θεοτόκου Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church Reverend Father Dean J. Dimon Proistamenos 2187 West 14th Street, Cleveland, OH 44113 216-861-0116 Sunday, September 2, 2018 14th Sunday of Matthew FATHER DEAN S MESSAGE Commit your way to the Lord Trust in Him, and He will act Psalm 37.5 Dearly Beloved in the Lord: The month of September is the month in which our Christian Orthodox Church celebrates the beginning of the New Ecclesiastical Year. In the same spirit in which I send this letter, I extend my prayer to God that the year will be filled with good health, renewed spiritual strength, along with dedicated and inspirational Stewardship. The truths and values of our Faith are our responsibility. These are principles we should continue to cultivate and understand so that we may apply them to ourselves and to our children. Let us never forget that our children look upon us as the example regarding their learning and direction in life. We must view our Church, not simply as a community but as THE EUCHARISTIC COMMUNITY. Jesus Christ, our Divine Teacher, teaches that the holy Eucharist is continuous. Jesus offers His Holy Body and Precious Blood so that He may always be with us and that we may always be with Him. For this reason He said: He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in Him (John 6:56). Parish Council Members Emmanuel Ermidis President Konstantinos Almiroudis Vice President Jim Ganotis Treasurer Panagiota Petratos Secretary Eleni Karadaglis Michael Manak It is imperative that we walk hand in hand in one unity on the road of Christian Orthodoxy and to live with goodness, righteousness, and truth, enlightened by the Holy Spirit. The beginning of the Ecclesiastical Year is a time to begin this new effort. The effort must be directed toward the spiritual development of ourselves and our children. No one should remain outside of the life of our Parish. We must do something different for ourselves during the New Ecclesiastical Year. We must learn to bring into sharp focus and to have a strong awareness of our Christian conscience, our history, and our sacred Tradition, and our Church. May the Blessing of God always be with you, +Fr. Dean Dimon Irene Scordos Christopher Sheely.Athanasios Anagnostos Sam Zizis

Epistle Ἀπόστολος 14th Sunday of Matthew St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 1:21-24; 2:1-4 Prokeimenon. Mode Plagal 1. Psalm 11.7,1 You, O Lord, shall keep us and preserve us. Verse: Save me, O Lord, for the godly man has failed. The reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 1:21-24; 2:1-4 Brethren, it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has commissioned us; he has put his seal upon us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee. But I call God to witness against me - it was to spare you that I refrained from coming to Corinth. Not that we lord it over your faith; we work with you for your joy, for you stand firm in your faith. For I made up my mind not to make you another painful visit. For if I cause you pain, who is there to make me glad but the one whom I have pained? And I wrote as I did, so that when I came I might not suffer pain from those who should have made me rejoice, for I felt sure of all of you, that my joy would be the joy of you all. For I wrote you out of much affliction and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to cause you pain but to let you know the abundant love that I have for you. Gospel 14th Sunday of Matthew The Gospel According to Matthew 22:2-14 The Lord said this parable, "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a marriage feast for his son, and sent his servants to call those who were invited to the marriage feast; but they would not come. Again he sent other servants, saying, 'Tell those who are invited, Behold, I have made ready my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves are killed, and everything is ready; come to the marriage feast.' But they made light of it and went off, one to his farm, another to his business, while the rest seized his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them. The king was angry, and he sent his troops and destroyed those murderers and burned their city. Then he said to his servants, 'The wedding is ready, but those invited were not worthy. Go therefore to the thoroughfares, and invite to the marriage feast as many as you find.' And those servants went out into the streets and gathered all whom they found, both bad and good; so the wedding hall was filled with guests. But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment; and he said to him, 'Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?' And he was speechless. Then the king said to the attendants, 'Bind him hand and foot, and cast him into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth.' For many are called, but few are chosen."

The Word who with the Father and Spirit is cobeginningless, the one born from a Virgin for our salvation, let us praise and worship we the faithfull; for he was pleased to ascend in the flesh upon the Cross, and death for us to endure, and raise all the departed, in his Resurrection glorious. Your loyal martyr, Lord, while contending for you, the crown of incorruption they earned for themselves, from you the God of all of us; for armed with your might, they defeated the tyrants, and crushed all the demons and their powerless presumtion. Through their intercessions, O Christ our God, we pray to you to save our souls. Apolytikion of the Church To-day is the crown of our Salvation and the manifestation of the Eternal Mystery. The Son of God becometh the son of the Virgin, and Gabriel announceth the good tidings of grace. Wherefore let us also with him cry to the Mother of God: Hail! Thou that art full of grace; the Lord is with thee. By your holy nativity O most undefiled one, Joachim and Anna were freed from the scorn of childlessness, and Adam and Eve from death corruption. This is the feast now observed by your people, who from the guilt of their errors, were delivered as they cry out to you: the barren one bears the Theotokos, and our life's sustainer. 4

Dear Parents, Serving in God s Altar is indeed an honor. The Altar is called the Holy of Holies so this is a very sacred place. As Altar boys they will be assisting Fr. Dean, Metropolitan Savas, and any visiting Clergy during Divine Services. The participation of your young boys is invaluable and very important to the smooth practice of the Holy services. Not only do they have a wonderful opportunity to serve the Church, but they are also presented with a unique experience to see the services from a different perspective. This is a very serious commitment and your boys should enter the Altar with faith and the upmost respect. Scripture Readings concerning the Altar. Only fear the Lord, and serve Him in truth with all your heart, for you know what great things He has done for you. 1 Samuel 12:24 If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor. John 12:26 Prayer for an Altar Boy O King of Glory, for to serve Thee is a great and awesome thing, even to the Heavenly Powers. 7

It is the practice of our Church to give the name of a Saint to the new born child. By assuming the name of a Saint, we not only honor and express our gratitude to a Holy Person for his exceptional contribution to the Orthodox Faith, but provide the new Christian with an example worthy of emulation. The Saint then becomes the Patron of the child protecting it from all danger. Through his prayers, God will grant the child the necessary illumination to become a zealous member of the Church and an ardent follower of Christ. SEPTEMBER 1 IS THE BEGINNING OF THE NEW ECCLESIASTICAL YEAR. Each month we will be acknowledging those celebrating their nameday in our monthly bulletin. If by chance we accidentally miss someone's nameday, we ask that you please contact the Church Office so that we may correct our records. We extend our prayers to all those celebrating September Namedays and beseech our heavenly Father to grant them many years. September 1 Sts.
