ΤΑ ΝΕΑ ΤΟΥ IB της Σχολής Μωραΐτη Τεύχος 13 Ιούνιος 2008 ΙB Student News Μαθητικές Διακρίσεις Ο μαθητής του ΙΒ1 Άγγελος Κοζώνης, κατέλαβε την πρώτη θέση στον 4ο Μαθηματικό Διαγωνισμό που διοργανώνει το σχολείο ACS. Επίσης, οι μαθητές του ΙΒ1 Γιώργος Γρυπάρης, Ελένη Θανοπούλου και Μαρία- Νεφέλη Τσετσέρη διακρίθηκαν στους ομαδικούς διαγωνισμούς. Υπεύθυνος καθηγητής της ομάδας ήταν ο καθηγητής των Μαθηματικών του ΙΒ κ. C. Bowen. Under the guidance of the Moraitis School s debate coach, Mr. J. Vlastaras, three ΙΒ1 students Constantinos Capsaskis, Ellie Kouremenou and Constantinos Linos managed to distinguish themselves amongst both high school and university students from around the world. They competed in various debate tournaments hosted in countries ranging from Greece to Ireland, and managed to rank in the highest percentile of both speakers and teams. Their most important accomplishments include: they debated only against University students. They managed to rank 6 th out of 40 teams with both debaters ranking in the top 15 speakers of the tournament (11 th and 13 th respectively). All three of our students were chosen for the preliminary 12 best student debaters in Greece to represent the National debate team in the World Schools debate tournament. The National team will consist of 5 students and the tryouts will take place at the St. Catherine s British Embassy School. Our IB1 students Eleni Ladikou and Maria Zygouropoulou were among the finalists in a competition organized by the Molecular Frontiers Foundation for the most insightful questions in science, for school children aged up to seventeen. They sent their questions to www.moleclues.org and they had to give reasons why they were important questions and how their questions could be investigated further. Judges from the Scientific Advisory Board of Molecular Frontiers, all distinguished scientists, discussed these details at length in Stockholm on 29th May. At the Panhellenic Forensics Debate Tournament, our team ranked 14 th out of 40 teams. At the same tournament Constantinos Linos ranked 16 th, Constantinos Capsaskis 28 th and Ellie Kouremenou 36 th out of 104 speakers. At the Spring Deree College Invitational tournament, the team of Constantinos Linos and Constantinos Capsakis managed to break into the semi-final round where The winners, five girls and five boys, were announced the following day at a multidisciplinary symposium entitled "Energy and Nano: Emerging Molecular Science & Technology", which was held at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm from 30-31 May. Dr. Ε. Ball, IB Biology teacher and UK University counselor, was invited at the symposium as an Educational Advisor. Eminent speakers included Sir Aaron Klug, Nobel laureate from Cambridge Τα Νέα του ΙΒ 1

UK, and Mr. George Whitesides from Harvard University. Our IB1 student Elena Pitoulis has been participating with considerable success in the 2008 World Tour of the Professional Kiteboarding Riders Association (PKRA). In the singles, she came in 7 th in Mexico, 8 th in France and 5 th in Venezuela. She is currently in the Dominican Republic for the fourth stop of the World Tour. Επίσης πέτυχε σημαντική νίκη επί του Ούγγρου γκραν μετρ Σανγκ Τσάο στα πλαίσια του Πρωταθλήματος Ευρώπης 2008. Γιορτή Αντώνη Μωραΐτη Στις 2 Φεβρουαρίου, πραγματοποιήθηκε η ετήσια εκδήλωση στη μνήμη του ιδρυτή του Σχολείου μας Αντώνη Μωραΐτη. Υ- πεύθυνοι για την παρουσίαση της εκδήλωσης ήταν οι μαθητές μας Αργύρης Χοϊμές (ΙΒ2) και Μαρία-Νεφέλη Τσετσέρη (ΙΒ1). IB German Group Our IB1 student Gregy Marinakis is one of the four Greek riders who were chosen to participate in the junior category of the European championship to be held on the 17 th of July in the Czech Republic. The European championship of the juniors and young riders category is one of the most important championships internationally, not only for the height of the fences and the necessary skills to have a clear round but also for its level as only the best four riders of each European country participate in this event. German language IB1 students published the first issue of Obst und Gemüse, a German newspaper for the IB students with the assistance of their teacher Mr. J. Brengelmann. University Scholarship Continuing our excellent cooperation with the International University of Luigi Bocconi, our IB1 student Maria- Nefeli Tsetseri has been awarded a summer scholarship. She will be attending college-level courses in the fields of Law, Economics, Management and Mathematics between June 23-27 during the Discover your talent week. The program will include lectures, group activities as well as independent presentations. Σχολικές Εκδρομές Από 11/3 μέχρι 15/3 πραγματοποιήθηκε η πενθήμερη σχολική εκδρομή των μαθητών του ΙΒ2. Athens Model United Nations On 28-30 March, our IB1 students Vasilis Hatziaslanis, Eleni Intzidi, Ilias Katsoufis, Dimitris Kentistos, Dionisis Orkoulas, Panos Tzanetakis took part at the annual Athens Model United Nations hosted by the Alice Marangopoulos Foundation for Human Rights and acted as UN delegates for North Korea and Costa Rica. Faculty News H καθηγήτρια Visual Arts του IB κ. Μ. Κόντη συμμετείχε στην έκθεση που πραγματοποιήθηκε στο Εθνικό Θέατρο REX τον Απρίλιο. Η έκθεση είχε τίτλο Common View και επιμελήτριες τις Ελένη Κούκο και Gilen Dantan. Πρόκειται για ένα νέο πρόγραμμα που εγκαινίασε το Εθνικό Θέατρο ως μια πλατφόρμα με σύγχρονους Έλληνες αλλά και ξένους εικαστικούς που «τρέχει» παράλληλα με το πρόγραμμα του θεάτρου. Η κα. Κόντη παρουσίασε το έργο Maiden and Rex. Η εγκατάσταση αποτελείται από εννέα σχέδια (70χ100εκ), μια μακέτα βιβλιοθήκη/κήπο (180χ110εκ) καθώς και κείμενο σε 300 αριθμημένα αντίτυπα. Our IB Music teacher Dr. M. Biondi has recently produced a CD of his music. Five of his compositions are featured on Stasis/Antistasis, which will be released by Chalmyra Records in September. He has also been privileged to have his textbook, Widening Our Horizons, considered for publication. Horizons is a study of new educational techniques in music, and features essays on the evolution of the Viennese school of music, techniques of linear analysis, and theory of knowledge in music. In February, our IB German teacher Mr. J. Brengelmann participated in a special seminar for examiners at the Goethe-Institute of Athens. In April, he also participated in a special conference for teachers of the German language ( Aufbau sprachlicher Handlungsfähig- Τα Νέα του ΙΒ 3

keit ) held at the German School of Athens. Mr V. Kyrtatas, one of our Math and TOK teachers will be workshop leader for TOK at the IBO Diploma Program Workshops for teachers and coordinators new to the IB program. The workshop will take place between 4/7 and 9/7 at The Kessaris School facilities at Vari. Πολιτιστικές Δραστηριότητες Επίσκεψη του Πρέσβη της Γαλλίας Την Τετάρτη 26 Μαρτίου επισκέφθηκε το σχολείο μας ο Γάλλος Πρέσβης στην Ελλάδα Christophe Farnaud. Ο κύριος Πρέσβης και η υπεύθυνη για τα Γαλλικά Πανεπιστήμια mme P. Savary, μίλησαν στους μαθητές της Α και Β Λυκείου, ΙΒ1 και ΙΒ2 για τις σπουδές στη Γαλλία καθώς και τις επαγγελματικές προοπτικές που προκύπτουν στο πλαίσιο της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης. New IB Staff Member Since April 2008, Ms E. Kosma has joined our Administrative Staff replacing Ms P. Sakellaridou. Ms Kosma holds a degree in French Literature from the University of Athens. IB Interviews Όπως κάθε χρόνο, έτσι και φέτος έγιναν από 31/3 έως 10/4 οι συνεντεύξεις των υποψηφίων μαθητών της σχολικής περιόδου 2008-2010. Μαθητές του ΙΒ1 στα πλαίσια του CAS υποδέχθηκαν τα παιδιά και τους γονείς τους διευκολύνοντας με αυτό τον τρόπο την όλη διαδικασία. IB Theatre News As part of their new syllabus in Theatre, first year students, under the guidance of their teacher Dr. A. Stevens, took part in two different performances for fellow students and staff. The first, The False Turk by Barry Grantham, is a play in the style of seventeenth century Commedia dell Arte, involving some of the principal Commedia characters: Pantalone, Arlecchino, Pedrolino (substituted for this performance by Pulcinella), Franceschina and, of course, the Innamorata and Innamorato. Authentic Commedia masks were used, requiring the performers to develop an appropriately physical acting style, both dynamic and precise. It was also a great opportunity to experiment with the lazzi (comic routines) that were the hallmark of Commedia and the source of its great influence on much comedy today. The second performance was very different, not a play at all, but an experiment in audience participation and an exploration of some the relationship that exists between theatre and psychology (which, this year, all Theatre students also study). The Theatre students first demonstrated how they could each in turn use the other actors to create a stage picture of their own personality, with its different aspects (or selves ) and the relations between them. They then asked audience members to do the same, using the actors in the same way. The rest of the audience then interpreted and commented on what they saw. Unlike a rehearsed performance, the event was spontaneous and to some extent unpredictable. Τα Νέα του ΙΒ 4

Both performances were very successful and were thoroughly enjoyed by the audiences as well as helping the performers to gain more insight into that manysided thing called Theatre. IB Music News To showcase the talent of its IB2 students is always the privilege of the IB Music Department, and this past year was no exception. The department had the pleasure of hosting its seventh annual student recital in March. IB2 students Stella Kavala and Alexander Nathan were featured in an hour-length concert. Stella performed arias of Mozart and Puccini, as well as jazz and popular Greek songs. Alexander performed the Polonaise No 1 by Chopin as well as piano music of Bach and Mozart. Παζάρι του σχολείου μας κατάφερε να συγκεντρώσει χρήματα για την ενίσχυση του έργου του προγράμματος. Το πολύ σημαντικό πρόγραμμα ανακύκλωσης χαρτιού του σχολείου μας, συνεχίζεται με επιτυχία στους χώρους του ΙΒ. Οι μαθητές του ΙΒ1 Γιώργος Γρυπάρης. και Νικόλας Νεόφυτος έχουν αναλάβει με συνέπεια την ευθύνη της συλλογής του χαρτιού σε σχεδόν εβδομαδιαία βάση. Στις αρχές Μαρτίου, μια μικρή ομάδα μαθητών και μαθητριών από το ΙΒ1 και ΙΒ2 συμμετείχε σε απελευθέρωση πουλιών στην Πάρνηθα που οργανώθηκε από τους εθελοντές του ΕΚΠΑΖ (Κέντρο Προστασίας Άγριων Ζώων). Εθελοντικές Δραστηριότητες Στα πλαίσια του εθελοντικού προγράμματος του IB, το πρώτο εξάμηνο του 2008, οι μαθητές και οι μαθήτριές μας συμμετείχαν σε μια σειρά από πολύ ενδιαφέρουσες δράσεις. Η μαθήτρια του IB1 Μιράντα Βελιώτη ανέλαβε μια πολύ σημαντική πρωτοβουλία οικονομικής ενίσχυσης της κοινότητας Stellenbosch στη Νότια Αφρική. Το Αναπτυξιακό Πρόγραμμα της Κοινότητας Stellenbosch είναι μια μη κερδοσκοπική οργάνωση που προσφέρει υποστήριξη, στέγη, τροφή και εκπαίδευση στα φτωχά παιδιά της κοινότητας και παράλληλα οργανώνει καμπάνιες ενημέρωσης/πρόληψης σχετικά με τον HIV/AIDS και την φυματίωση στον πληθυσμό της περιοχής. Η Μιράντα συμμετέχοντας στο Χριστουγεννιάτικο Μέσα Μαρτίου, μαθήτριες του ΙΒ1 συμμετείχαν στην παραγωγή οπτικοακουστικού υλικού στα πλαίσια της προετοιμασίας του προγράμματος κοινωνικής δράσης για παιδιά και εφήβους αφιερωμένο στον κύκλο της ζωής της οργάνωσης «Μέριμνα». Το υλικό για το πρόγραμμα με τον τίτλο «Πράσινη κλωστή δεμένη σ ένα δέντρο τυλιγμένη» θέλει να δώσει την ευκαιρία στα παιδιά των σχολείων της χώρας να ευαισθητοποιηθούν σχετικά με την ποιότητα της ζωής μας και την αξία προστασίας της φύσης. Οι μεγάλες καταστροφικές πυρκαγιές του περασμένου Αυγούστου αποτέλεσαν αφορμή για αυτή τη δραστηριότητα. Στις 12 και 13 Απριλίου, ομάδα μαθητών και μαθητριών ενίσχυσε τη δημοπρασία των έργων της έκθεσης Hearts in Athens που διοργάνωσε η ένωση «Μαζί για το Παιδί». Τα Νέα του ΙΒ 5

Τέλος, για το κλείσιμο της χρονιάς, μαθήτριες και μαθητές μας θα απασχοληθούν εθελοντικά στο πολύ σημαντικό διεθνές φεστιβάλ Ντοκιμαντέρ και Αναπηρία που διοργανώνει για δεύτερη χρονιά η Γενική Γραμματεία Ενημέρωσης και Επικοινωνίας μαζί με το Κέντρο Ελληνικού Κινηματογράφου. Το φεστιβάλ γίνεται στους χώρους του Μουσείου Μπενάκη στις 21-23 Ιουνίου. UK University Representatives Since the beginning of the year, representatives from the following UK Universities visited the school and talked to our counselors and students: Imperial College, UCL, King's College, LSE, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, Bristol University and Royal Holloway University. IB Art News Art Exhibition On April 16 th the final examination for the IB2 students took place at Gazi, Technopolis where thirty IB2 Visual Arts students exhibited their work which included a large range of two dimensional and three dimensional art. Large scale paintings, photographs, videos, as well as a rather sizeable collection of dresses made from various media and unusual materials were on display. A hand-made embellished armchair was considered one of the most original and attractive displays. US Universities Update It has been a successful year for American College and University acceptances. Sixteen students applied to various institutions and the results were very pleasing. Students will be attending Bentley, Boston University, Brown University, University of Chicago, Duke, Georgetown, Hamilton, MICA (the Maryland Institute College of Art), Parsons-The New School for Design, the Pratt Institute, Vassar, Wheaton and Yale. Acceptances also included institutions such as Cornell, Johns Hopkins, Northwestern and Tufts. (Alexandra Kostaki, IB2) IB Alumni Corner In this issue we are glad to present two more of our IB graduates: Stefanos Geroulanos ( 97) and Charles Papageorgiou ( 97). We asked them to brief us on their academic and professional achievements and to comment on a few topics. Stefanos Geroulanos 97 Stefanos belongs to the extremely small group in the world of IB graduates who managed to collect 45 out of 45 possible points for their diploma. After completing the IB at our school, he went on to earn his BA from Princeton in 2001 and then moved to Baltimore to do a Ph.D. Τα Νέα του ΙΒ 6

in comparative literature at the Humanities Center of The Johns Hopkins University. He finished his Ph.D in 2007 and he is now taking up the position of Assistant Professor of Modern European Intellectual History at New York University. He is presently turning his dissertation into a book as well as completing a few other publications, including a translation and two edited volumes. Before joining NYU, he also taught at Johns Hopkins University and the Maryland Institute College of Art, mostly on modern European philosophy, cinema and film theory, and conceptual history. We asked Stefanos to comment on a few topics. Here is what he was kind enough to say: Advice to current students that could help them in their academic and professional decisions: The main thing is that you should not go to university with an exact plan of study. Avoid getting pinned down into a specific program for as long as possible, or if at all possible choose an interdisciplinary program. In other words, unless you are directing your studies solely on the basis of what exact job you want once you graduate, it is senseless to try and draft exact parameters for your studies. You can end up disappointed rather easily, and it may well be your fault, because it may well be the case that you have closed yourself off from the more interesting stuff. Also, your current impressions of what you are most interested in will probably not last three months once you're in college, and that's a good thing. So keep an open mind toward new subjects and methodologies. Plus one thing you will take from the IB is an ability to adapt to a new environment and learn as if from the beginning. I changed majors 4 times during my first two-and-a-half years at Princeton, and then again twice in my first couple of years in grad school. I learnt a lot and enjoyed myself much more and I think my work benefited from this frequent change of perspectives. Using your experience could you evaluate the IB program as a pre-academic school environment? The IB is justly recognized as a remarkable pre-college program. Both the number of courses and the time spent in between courses (e.g. in library work) allow you to begin adjusting to crucial principles and expectations of coursework at university, and seem to facilitate a great balance of breadth and depth studied, of expectations and learning. A lot of the international students I met as an undergrad had gone through IB programs and did very well; while it's not clear to me why this is the case, I certainly felt that not all other programs at once demanded of their students in the everyday sense what the IB did of us. Nor were other programs as relaxed and challenging a fine, strange balance as the IB was. I could also be biased I had a fantastic time at the IB and came out of it having benefited a lot! Charles Papageorgiou 97 Charles earned in 2000 his Master s in Chemistry (MChem) graduating in the top five of his class with First Class Honours from the University of Bath. In 2004 he earned his Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge (Darwin College). He is currently working as a research scientist at Amgen, a leading human therapeutics company in the biotechnology industry. We asked Charles to comment on a few topics. Here is what he was kind enough to say: Advice to students that could help them in their academic and professional decisions: Not to get too dogged down on getting into the best university but to focus on Τα Νέα του ΙΒ 7

learning as much as possible. If you are serious, responsible and do your homework you will find your path to success. Once at University find a mentor you trust and try and make the most out of every opportunity that comes your way. For success, academic excellence goes hand in hand with networking so keep an eye out for events from day one. You will be surprised to see how small your professional world will be, the same people keep popping up no matter which continent of the world you move to. undergraduate studies. I remember my first year at Bath University, I was amazed at how well I had been prepared. The majority of the students were struggling with concepts that we had covered in the IB. While the curriculum is demanding, the teachers do a good job in keeping it real building confidence in their students (but at the same time not over pampering them) easing the transition from home/school to the outside world and the University. An evaluation of the IB preparation as a first contact with an academic environment: I would say that the IB program and in particular the way it is approached by The Moraitis School is exceptional.
