Ευαγγελισμός της Θεοτόκου Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church Reverend Father Dean J. Dimon Proistamenos 2187 West 14th Street, Cleveland, OH 44113 216-861-0116 Sunday, August 26, 2019-13th Sunday of Matthew THE BEHEADING OF ST. JOHN THE FORERUNNER AUGUST 29 For some people it is very difficult to tell the truth. There are times when the truth can even cost a person his life. What is more valuable: one s life on earth or the truth? If we call to mind that the truth is none other than Jesus Christ (see John 14:6), then there is no doubt that the truth is more precious than our very life! It is the highest responsibility for any person, and especially for the Christian, to be courageous no matter what the consequences may be. It is imperative that our attitude (frovnhma = attitude/behavior) be consistent and that we always speak the truth. This was the understanding in which St. John the Forerunner lived. He never swayed from the truth; he never flattered anyone; he never hid behind excuses or had second thoughts. He was a sincere man and pure in heart dealing directly with all people and situations St. John lived during the reign of King Herod Agrippa, the son of Herod the Great who had slaughtered all the boys in Bethlehem under the age of two years old leaving their mothers to grieve and lament their innocent deaths. Herod Agrippa had divorced his wife to live unlawfully with Herodias, the wife of his brother Phillip. The scandal had gone too far. Everyone had become obsessed with this adulterous affair. Behind the king s back the people murmured about his sinful behavior and no one had the courage to tell him the truth. Day and night the people, desiring to stay on the king s good side, flattered him and ignored the fact that the people were scandalized by this affair. One person, however, did come forward to tell the truth the Forerunner! Without fear he ascended the marble stairway of the king s palace and right before the eyes of the king accused him of the adulterous affair and said: It is not lawful for you to have her (Matt. 14:4). The truth was revealed in a thunderous and enlightening manner but, what was the result? At one time, when the Prophet Nathan accused King David of his adulterous affair that included having the husband killed there was a miraculous result. King David repented before the prophet and to this day we have an eternal example of sincere repentance and return to the ways of God (see 2 Kings 12). The accusation of the Forerunner, however, fell on deaf ears. King Herod s heart had become so hardened by his sinful ways that he could not bring himself to repentance. The Forerunners words were like a knife that, instead of severing the unlawful relationship, served as the reason for his beheading! The scene had been set. In celebration of his birthday, Herod planned a party that got out of control. All of the wealthiest and popular people of Jerusalem had been invited: food, drinks, and dancing for everyone. The devil, however, waited for his moment and ambushed the celebration in order to bring about the demise of the Forerunner whose words had turned many people from their evil ways. The daughter of Herodias stood and danced for Herod. The king was so pleased with her performance that he told her he would grant anything she desired. This daughter, of an adulterous mother, however, asked for something that had not been imagined: I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter. Herod, drunk and not wanting to go back on his promise before all of the influential people of his kingdom, ordered the head of the Forerunner be brought to him! The truth cost our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ His life and the truth brought about the end of the Forerunner s life too. Now you see what the truth costs, but the truth must be heard, even when it means the ultimate sacrifice. Epistle Ἀπόστολος 13th Sunday of Matthew St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 16:13-24 Prokeimenon. Mode 4. Psalm 103.24,1 O Lord, how manifold are your works. You have made all things in wisdom. Verse: Bless the Lord, O my soul. Brethren, be watchful, stand firm in your faith, be courageous, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love. Now, brethren, you know that the household of Stephanas were the first converts in Achaia, and they have devoted themselves to the service of the saints; I urge you to be subject to such men and to every fellow worker and laborer. I rejoice at the coming of Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicos, because they have made up for your absence; for they refreshed my spirit as well as yours. Give recognition to such men. The churches of Asia send greetings. Aquila and Prisca, together with the church in their house, send you hearty greetings in the Lord. All the brethren send greetings. Greet one another with a holy kiss. I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand. If any one has no love for the Lord, let him be accursed. Our Lord, come! The grace of the Lord Jesus be with you. My love be with you all in Christ Jesus. Amen. 40 Day Memorial Προκείμενον. Gospel 13th Sunday of Matthew The Gospel According to Matthew 21:33-42 The Lord said this parable, "There was a householder who planted a vineyard, and set a hedge around it, and dug a wine press in it, and built a tower, and let it out to tenants, and went into another country. When the season of fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants, to get his fruit; and the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another, and stoned another. Again he sent other servants, more than the first; and they did the same to them. Afterward he sent his son to them, saying 'They will respect my son.' But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, 'This is the heir; come, let us kill him and have his inheritance.' And they took him and cast him out of the vineyard and killed him. When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?" They said to him, "He will put those wretches to a miserable death, and let out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruits in their seasons." Jesus said to them, "Have you never read in the scriptures: 'The very stone which the builders rejected has become the head of the corner; this was the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes?'" λέγει αὐτοῖς ὁ Ιησοῦς οὐδέποτε ἀνέγνωτε ἐν ταῖς γραφαῖς, λίθον ὃν ἀπεδοκίμασαν οἱ οἰκοδομοῦντες, οὗτος ἐγενήθη εἰς κεφαλὴν γωνίας παρὰ Κυρίου ἐγένετο αὕτη, καὶ ἔστι θαυμαστὴ ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς ἡμῶν; Today, Following the Divine Liturgy coffee and refreshments are provided by the Valsamidis family in loving memory of Chris, in the lower level social hall of the church. Having heard the joyous resurrection message, from the lips of the Angel, the Lord's women Disciples, and with the ancestral sentence removed from them, to the Apostoles with pride they related: Death has been despolled now, Christ our God has risen indeed, granting to all the world his great mercy. Apolytikion of Martyrs Adrianos and Natalia Thou didst deem that Faith which hath salvation to be riches never lost or plundered. Thou forsookest thy fathers' impiety, and thou didst follow thy Master, becoming rich in His divine gifts, O glorious Adrian. With the godlyminded Natalie, who emboldened thee, entreat Christ God, O Martyr, that our souls be saved. Apolytikion of the Church To-day is the crown of our Salvation and the manifestation of the Eternal Mystery. The Son of God becometh the son of the Virgin, and Gabriel announceth the good tidings of grace. Wherefore let us also with him cry to the Mother of God: Hail! Thou that art full of grace; the Lord is with thee. By your holy nativity O most undefiled one, Joachim and Anna were freed from the scorn of childlessness, and Adam and Eve from death corruption. This is the feast now observed by your people, who from the guilt of their errors, were delivered as they cry out to you: the barren one bears the Theotokos, and our life's sustainer. 4

Life on earth is a gift. The work we do is also a gift if we see it as an opportunity to serve God and others. St. Paul instructs us, Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men (Colossians 3:23). When we see our work in this way, we are able to become Christian Stewards of our Work. It is the practice of our Church to give the name of a Saint to the newborn child. By assuming the name of a Saint, we not only honor and express our gratitude to a Holy Person for his exceptional contribution to the Orthodox Faith, but provide the new Christian with an example worthy of emulation. The Saint then becomes the Patron of the child protecting it from all danger. Through his prayer, God will grant the child necessary illumination to become a zealous member of the Church and an ardent follower of Christ. Each month we will be acknowledging those celebrating their nameday in our monthly bulletin. If by chance we accidentally miss someone s nameday, we ask that you please contact the Church Office so that we may correct our records. We extend our prayers to all those celebrating their August Namedays and beseech out heavenly Father to grant them many years.
