2 Maria and Andreas are planning to go to Mount Olympus next Sunday. Mount Olympus is the highest mountain in Greece, the coolest place in the summer and the coldest in the winter. Maria s children who have never been up there have heard a lot about Mount Olympus from their mother. Maria has invited Ellie, a friend from En gland to go with them. She knows Ellie s eldest brother who went to England fifteen years ago. He is married with three children. They have agreed to put on warm clothes because the weather on Olympus will be colder. Πότε θα πάμε στον Όλυμπο Μαρία; When will we go to Olympos Maria? Την επόμενη Κυριακή Next (The following) Sunday Γιατί ρωτάς; Why do you ask? Μην πεις ότι δεν θέλεις να πας, γιατί τα παιδιά μου κάθε μέρα ρωτάνε : «Πότε θα πάμε»; Don t say, that you don t want to go, because the children ask me every day Δεν πήγαν ποτέ στον Όλυμπο και θέλουν να τον δουν. They never went to Olympos and they want to see it Πώς να πάμε; How will we go? (How to go?) Δεν καταλαβαίνω. Με το αυτοκίνητο. I don t understand. With the car Με ποιο αυτοκίνητο; With which car? Το δικό μου δυστυχώς δεν θα είναι έτοιμο την Κυριακή Unfortunately mine will not be ready on Sunday Δεν πειράζει. Θα πάμε με το δικό μας. Είναι πιο καινούριο. It doesn t matter. We will go with ours. It is more new (newer) Ναι, αλλά πρέπει να πάρουμε δύο αυτοκίνητα Yes, but we must take two cars Γιατί; Why? Θα είμαστε μόνο πέντε We will only be five 2

3 Όχι. Θα είμαστε πιο πολλοί. Θέλει να έρθει μαζί μας ο αδερφός μου με τη γυναίκα του και τη κόρη του και ένας άλλος φίλος. No. We will be more. My brother wants to come with us with his wife and his daughter and another friend (M) Να πάμε με το λεωφορείο. Έτσι θα πάει και η φίλη μου η Έλλη. To go with the bus. So my friend Ellie will also go. Ποια είναι η Έλλη; Who is Ellie? Την γνώρισες ένα βράδυ στο σπίτι μου. Είναι από την Αγγλία. You met her (learnt her) one evening at my house. She is from England. Ήρθε εδώ για λίγες μέρες και θα φύγει σε τρις μέρες. Ξέρει τον αδερφό μου στην Αγγλία She came here for a few days and will leave in three days. She knows my brother in England. Ναι! Θυμάμαι τώρα. Έχεις αδελφό στην Αγγλία; Yes! I remember now. You have a brother in England? Είναι πιο μεγάλος ή πιο μικρός από σένα; Is he older or younger than you? Είναι πιο μεγάλος από μένα He is older than me Είναι ο πιο μεγάλος αδελφός He is the eldest brother Πήγε στην Αγγλία πριν δεκαπέντε χρόνια He went to England fifteen years ago Είναι ψηλός και πιο δυνατός από τον άλλο αδελφό μου He is tall and stronger than my other brother Είναι παντρεμένος ο αδελφός σου; Is you brother married? Είναι παντρεμένος. Έχει τρία παιδιά. Το πιο μεγάλο παιδί είναι δέκα χρονό He is married. He has three children. The eldest child is ten years old. Γράφει συχνά; Does he write often? Όχι. Γράφει σπάνια No. He writes rarely Θα του στείλω μερικά πράματα με τη Νίκη I will send him some things with Niki Πως θα ταξιδέψει η φίλη σου; Με πλοίο ή με αεροπλάνο; How will your friend (F) travel? With a boat or aeroplane? Με πλοίο. Θα κάνει πιο πολλές μέρες αλλά θα δει πιο πολλά μέρη With the boat. It will take more days but she will she many more places Το ταξίδι με το πλοίο είναι πιο φτηνό The travel with the boat is cheaper 3

4 Τώρα, το ταξίδι μας στον Όλυμπο Now, Our travel to Olympos Εντάξει. Θα πάμε με το λεωφορείο All right! We will go with the bus Πως είναι ο καιρός εκεί; How is the weather there? Θα είναι πιο κρύος It will be colder (more cold) Πρέπει να βάλουμε πιο ζεστά ρούχα We must put on warmer clothes We had four new words. Andreas wanted to know if Mary s brother is married or single- Παντρεμένος ή ελεύθερος Ελεύθερος literally means free but in contrast to παντρεμένος it means single. The third word is unfortunately (Δυστυχώς) The opposite of this is ευτυχώς «fortunately» The last word is δυνατός (strong) and the opposite, is weak Αδύνατος. Είμαι παντρεμένη I am married (F) Δεν είμαι ελεύθερη I am not free Ο ήλιος το καλοκαίρι είναι πιο δυνατός The sun in the summer is stronger Ευτυχώς ήταν καλή μέρα για την εκδρομή Fortunately it was a good day for the excursion Now look at comparisons. Place the word «πιο» before the adjectives Δυνατός πιο δυνατός Αδύνατος πιο αδύνατος Χαμηλός πιο χαμηλός Strong, Stronger (more strong) Weak, Weaker (more weak) Low, Lower (more low) Ψηλός πιο ψηλός Tall, Taller 4

5 Ο Αντρέας είναι πιο ψηλός από τον Πέτρο Andreas is taller than Petros Ο Πέτρος είναι πιο πλούσιος από τον Σπύρο Petros is richer than Spiros Η Νίκη είναι πιο φτωχή από τη Μαρία Niki is poorer than Maria Είμαι πιο δυνατός από τον Σπύρο I am stronger than Spiros Older and Younger are : πιο μεγάλος πιο μικρός Είναι πιο μεγάλος ή πιο μικρός ο αδελφός σου; Is your brother younger or older? Αυτοί έχουν πιο πολλά λεφτά από μας They have more money than us Ο Αντώνης είναι φτωχός Antonis is poor Ο Πέτρος είναι πιο φτωχός Petros is poorer Ο Αύγουστος είναι ο πιο ζεστός μήνας August is the hottest month Η Άνοιξη είναι η πιο ωραία εποχή Spring is the most beautiful season Η Σοφία είναι πιο όμορφη από την Άννα Sofia is prettier than Anna Η Χλόη είναι η πιο όμορφη Chloe is the prettiest Το δεύτερο είναι πιο καθαρό από το πρώτο, αλλά το τρίτο είναι το πιο καθαρό The second is clearer than the first but the third is the clearest 5
