The So Called "Charismatic" Movement But in order to understand better how contrary to the t eaching of the Holy Scripture and the Tradition of the Church are the teachings of the "charismatics", we must cite certain concrete passages of God's word, which directly refers to the subject. am referring mainly to those passages which deal with the "fruits"of the Holy Spirit. One ofthese characteristic passages in a simple manner describes how the faithful should generally behave, for the reason precisely that their life may not be found to be in sharp contradiction with the illumination of the Holy Spirit, which they received at their Baptism. Here is what St Paul says: "Walk as children of light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth) testing to see what is pleasing to the Lord" (Ephesians 5, 9). According to these epigrammatic words, the fruit of the Spirit is shown rightly, only when placed within the analogous frame work. And this frame work is given here with three very tangible words: (a) n all goodness (b) in righteousness and (c) in truth. Now, which goodness, and which righteousness and which truth can be permitted by the bl asphemo'tjs claim of the "charismatics", that they alone and their like ones receive the Holy Spirit, and not the entire body of Church? s the lord asking for this discrimination and this pride? s this pride acceptable by God? The Apostle Paul, in relation to the above pasage, says that the faithful should not do what was pleasing to them, but to be very careful, on the one hand "to test and see what is pleasing to the Lord", and on the other hand "to submit to one another in the fear of God". (Ephesious 5, 21). Where is this "test", in reference to the Lord's will, in the case of the followers of the "Charismatic"movement? Where is then "submission" in the fear of God? On the contrary, their whole behaviour and life and mentality bear witness to audacity and pride, which reach the limits of blasphemy. Thus the word of God comes to them as a catalyst: "The Lord opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble ones" (James 4, 6). n another passage of the New Testament we find more analytically a description of how the illumination 4th Sunday After Pentecost - n his Epistles, St Paul tells us that we are "justified by faith in Christ". Today's gospel shows us what sort of faith it is that justifies. A Capernaum, a Roman centurion obtains from Jesus the healing of his servant who is sick. The healing is in answer to his act of faith: "Go your way; and as you have believed, so be it done unto you... " This centurion is not one of the children 'of srael. Yet, it is in the centurion, and not in any of the "faithful" children of srael, that Jesus finds the sort of faith that justifies and leads to salvation. "Verily say unto you, have not lound so great faith, not even in srael". The ce nturion's faith is not identified with one 78 of th e Holy Spirit is authentically manifested in the life of the faithful. Thus we read in the epistle to the Galatians: "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, goodness, kindness, faith, meekness, continence". (Galatians 5, 22). Each of these words which describe here "the fruit of the Spirit" constitues a particular censure against the heresy of the "Charismatics". Because with them blasphemous and uncontrolled individualism one could not have either love" which sustains all things, and is patient for everything... " (1 Corinthians 13, 7); nor joy and ' "which transcends every mind" (Philippeans 4, 7); longsuffering and goodness and kindness, which, even though they speak for the sin prevailing in the Church, yet never dare they regard Baptism as dead nor the particular sinner as lost. Nor again can they have faith and meekness and continence, because all three by definition exclude t extreme and the ridiculous elements displayed by "Charismatics". Such aspects fall within the caltefjlor'l of the American Psychology of marketing of the Gaspe/" in its extreme form. For all the above reasons, the Orthodox "''rn"", should avoid the impiety of the "charismatic mnvpc ment". They n'eed but rember only two basic things: (1) The greater the illumination and enlightenment that the really God-bearing persons had received within the Church, the more loudly they cried out to! God, asking Him: "llumine my darkness, illumine darkness". (2) Whenever the true Saints saw even angels, they considered themselves unworthy for such a vision and they thought that it was Satan transformed into an "angel of light", who came to deceive them. So, full of fear and awe, they asked God to protect them! One can easily understand that'such humility is, exactly the opposite to the pride of the "Charismatics". As for us it remains but to say: May God preserve us from this heresy, and may God show His mercy upon those who are involved in it. fr:-$upokr; MOT9aiou + A. S. articular "religious" group or any set performance of ~tes. First of all, the centurion's faith is based in pro ;ound humility: "Lord, am not worthy that you should come under my roof...", he says. "But speak the word only... "with these words, the centurion desres to hear ihe word of the Lord with great respect and great faith. He believed that the word of the Lord is a great source of power and salvation. So he says to the Lord: "Speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed". The centurion believed that the word of Christ is a living power in life and that it will heal his servant. What sort offaith do we have? s it a living faith! t is based on humility? Do we believe in the power of the word of the Lord? And do we ask for this power in our prayer? The living faith of the centurion in today's gospel is indeed an example for all of us. Fr M. C. Do nat let it suggest your own fancies to you; but rather have it convey the awareness of your reaching out to -Gad. Remember this - the memory has a powerful proclivity for causing detriment to the spirit at the time of prayer." At the time of prayer one needs to gather together all the forces of body, soul and mind, that is to concentrate on the subject of prayer. We know from experience how hard it is to keep our memory concentrated on prayer and how easy it is for our mind to wander away from God into the trivial details of our daily life. Every minute of our prayer, therefore, we should reject thoughts and fancies that prevent us from reaching out to God through prayer. We should remember that it is at the time of prayer that the devil attacks us most. We should master and control our mind when we pray, so that all ev il and vain thoughts will be removed. We should remove pride and hypocricy from our mind and try to worship God in spirit and in truth. t is important to pray with the heart, and not merely with the lips. The Words of St. Paul, in this respect, are appropriate: "f you wilt confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and will believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you will be saved." (Romans, 10: 9). Chapter 45 "When you are at prayer the memory activates fantasies of either past happenings or of fresh Concerns or else of persons you have previously injured". Prayer is the setting aside of all thoughts in order to have only one thought, that of Jesus Christ our Saviour. However, when we pray, our mind is filled with many thoughts of events, past or present, or of persons who we have injured. We should make every effort to remove these thoughts which are detrimental in the spiritual cause of our prayer. The heart that is engaged in daily events, or the heart that is full of hatred and animosity, cannot be united with God in prayer. Only, when we give to God our heart, free from thoughts and events, only then ciln we be united to God. We should admit that this is not an easy thing to achieve. For that reason our effort for conquering our heart should be all the greater, so that we may offer our heart to God as an acceptable sacrifice. Chapter 46 "The devil so passionately envies the man who prays, that he employs every device to frustrate the purpose. Thus he does not cease to stir up thoughts of various affairs by means of the memory. He stirs up all the passions by means of the flesh. n this way he hopes to offer some obstacle to that excellent course pursued in prayer on the journey toward God." Prayer here is defined as the journey toward God. n this spiritual journey the devil sets many obstacles by stirring up all the passions in the heart of the person who prays. The mind of one person is filled Wth pnde and arrogance and starts recollecting a serres of good deeds instead of cultivating humility. ThS happened n the case of the Pharisee and the publican in the act of prayer. The heart of another person is filled with hatred an d animosity against others and seeks vengeance on them, forgetting the aim of prayer which S unron and communion with God. . ~ 1 11~ >1 \~ ~;' ~$ GRACE AND RELGON Divine Grace is the favours, the love, the help and the gifts, which God expresses and offers to us. t is given to us without us needing to ask, so great is the compassion and goodness of God. This grace is supplied freely so that we may come to know the Saviour Christ. t is not a wage, or reward for good deeds, efforts and sacrifices. t is free, given in abundance through the resurrected Christ for the salvation of mankind. Of course, this grace has as its beginning the goodness of God the Father, and emanates from the sacrifice and crucifixion of God the Son. The rebirth which grace brings and the life in Christ are granted by the third person of the Trinity, the Holy Spi iit. Need for Divine Grace Dvine Grace should not be absent from our lives because without this, it is impossible to remain even for one moment as a rejuvenated Christian. t is not possible to find God with our own thoughts, and to pray, to communicate with him by our own efforts alone. With -our human powers we cannot recover from our ethical downfall to stand honestly and cleanly before God. God moves us to repentance and faith. God restores us and holds us firm in our Christian journey and life. God revives us and blesses us. The holy words of our Lord emphasise the absolute necessity of divine grace for the commencement, cultivation, development of faith and our rebirth: "No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw Him" (n 6, 44) and "Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God" (n 3, 5). prayer of the virtuous man are unavailing, he will let up for a time. But again after a while he avenges himself on this man of prayer. For he will either enkindle the man's anger and thus dissipate that excellent state established in him by prayer, or else he chooses to outrage the spirit by provoking it to some unreasonable pleasure". Many are the devices improvised by the devil in his effort to bring obstacles and to frustrate the prayer of a person. He will at stages ease up his efforts for a time, o nly to renew his aggression more persistently, when the person who prays is unprepared. One way of the devils vengeance on him who prays is by enkindling the man 's anger and thus not allowing God's grace to remain in him. Another way is to provoke the person to commit another sin, which againresults in frustrating the aim of prayer. Knowing that the aim of the devil is to prevent our prayer, we should invoke the grace of the Holy Spirit to strengthen us in our struggle again st his machinati ons. Fr M. C. on Freedom With the intervention of the grace of God our freedom is not abolished. Divine grace acts as the first factor of chief contributor in the work of saving us. t does not compel our free will. Divine grace helps, and moves to repentance and to faith the person who is well-disposed. This is the person who wants to be' saved but does not have the ability to search for and discover salvation. n order to want salvation, it means that we must really desire it, that, at least in the depths of our heart there is some small but weak desire. This is the foundation, the beginning, the start of a recognition voluntary accommodation which is described in words: "Behold, stand at the door, and knock: if man hear my voice, and open the door, will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" order to enter. He stands outside, waits and knocks. He asks fof our consent. This involves the combined action or synergy our will with the divine grace and power in the work of our salvation, and its perfection through virtue. Results of Divine Grace Divine grace is the source of a holy life. St writes:... the ' fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, pe,ac,gj longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, m'."<m. ' ~ temperance" (Gal 5, 22-23). The first action of holy grace is that it calls Divine grace awakens us. We are aroused from lethargy and hypnotic effect of sin. t calls us to to God for enlightenment, to be rejuvenated and ~~'JP,m l Repent, believe, be God's friend, his child, in order be.saved. The second action of grace is justification'.' understand this, we should take into account that sinners, so long as they are guilty before God, ~",,,.. n condemned. However, divine grace comes to th who have repented and acknowledge Christ as Saviour and Redeemer. No matter how sinful, no ter how many or how serious their sins, once this has been accepted, the burden of guilt is relieved. are freed from the judgement, saved from the di wrath and justified. Declared as just in the eyes of there comes peace, freedom from the pangs of science and worthiness of the divine kingdom. As the Apostle says: "therefore being justified by faith, we. have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ" (Rom 5, 1). The third action of grace is our revival. With baptism which we received, we are born a second time in a holy, spiritual and heavenly birth. Consequently with our' struggles and with the help of holy grace we are born into a new, divine and holy life. The Lord spoke to Nicodemus about this internal rebirth: "Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God" and "Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God" (n 3, 3, 5). Following this, as a God-given fruit of grace and with inestimable va lue comes sanctificati on. Sanctification is the blessed state of man where no evil thought, guilty sensations or improper words or unworthy, evil, or hideous actions can intrude into the soul and infect life. n contrast, the sanctified person is adorned with every virtue. These are the fruits of divine grace and the stages of man's salvation: the Call, the Justification, the Rebirth, the Sanctification. These are interdependent, one presupposing the other and originating from the other. There remains glory. This is the divine glory which crowns man's redemption. This is the glory and the greatness of virtue. Here, in the present life it is the peace, the joy, the glad and gentle life in Christ. t is chiefly, the glory of the kingdom of God in the future heavenly life and kingdom. Justification The New Testament is full of the words of the God-inspired Apostle who declare that God calls us to salvation, justifies, us, rejuvenates us, through grace, san?tifying our lives and leading us to his glory. This,Justification is a reconciliation and a peace-making with God. The main conditions for justification are our faith in the Saviour Christ and the good deeds of a virtuous and holy life. This faith is not theoretical knowledge of the truths which Christ revealed, but a warm and living faith n the Savour. That is, an unshakeable conviction that He is, that only He is, the Saviour and Redeemer of sinners. This faith is the beginning of a christian life, and love is its finality. The Apostle Paul says "faith which worketh by love" (Gal 5, 6). Love is the living of faith. First love in God in accordance with the first of all the commandments "thou shalt love the Lord thy God wah all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength". And your neighbour as yourself (Mk 12, 30). This love was described as the fulfillment of the law (rom 13, 10). The Orthodox view is that man is not justified by faith alone but bytheworks ~f faith (see James 3,18; 1 Cor 13,1,2; 1 Jn 3,14: 1, 7, 6): Consequently the basic conditions for our justifi Cation are the Faith and the works of this Faith faith love, living faith and active love.
