METEROA-GREECE Calendar Production: The Meteroa - Greece Monasticism is a style of Christian life on a very high level of spirituality. Monks and Nuns aim to imitate Christ through absolute obedience to His commandments, virginity, poverty, fervent prayers, fasting, studying their inner-self and cultivation of virtues. They give a good example of life to all Christians who live into the temptations of a secular society. Monasteries are Monastic communities where Monks or Nuns live like brothers or sisters in Christ, like the first Christians according to the Acts of the Apostles. They safeguard and illumine the entire cosmos through their pure prayer and spiritual struggle. Monasteries are also institutions providing hospitality, philanthropy and alms to those in need. On the other hand, as they have rich libraries and cultivate fine arts (iconography, ecclesiastical music, calligraphy etc.), they are very often distinguished centers of culture and civilization. A very well known complex of Monasteries is that of Meteora in Greece. Nearby the city of Kalambaka there is a forest of rocks (meteorites). On the top of these rocks several ascetics established their hermitages before the 10 th Century AD. Over their they were anchored to God, living in purity, fast, heartfelt prayers and peace of mind and soul, glorifying the Name of God, mourning for the sins of the entire humankind and seeking the mercy of God for the whole creation. Later on (14 th Century AD) Saints Athanasios and Joasaph established the Great Meteoron (Monastery of Metamorphosis) on the top of one of these rocks and so the establishment of the Meteora-Monasteries complex began. Now we can see and visit the Monasteries of Roussanou, Anapafsa, Saint Stephan s, Varlaam etc. Meteora are always a place of prayer, worship and spiritual struggles; a holy and sacred place indeed. Meteoritan Monks and Nuns, surrounded by the blessings of the Saints who have pleased God on the same rocks in previous times, cultivate the Christian virtues and provide themselves as a good example of how the Gospel is translated in every-day practice in our secular times. On the other hand Meteora is a living thesaurus of excellent ecclesiastical art; wall-paintings, icons, liturgic manuscripts, sacerdotal vestments, music etc. which is a significant part of the Greek-Orthodox identity. Last but non least, it has to be underlined that the Monasteries are NOT Museums but living religious communities and so the visitors of Meteora have to behave themselves as pilgrims rather than tourists. Therefore they must enter the Monasteries with deep respect, silent and properly dressed; avoiding whatever could be offensive for these holy places and their sacred inhabitants. Dr Joseph Harkiolakis, Metropolitan of New Zealand GOYANZ Formed in 1966, the Greek Orthodox Youth Association of New Zealand is the official youth arm of the local Wellington Greek community. Set up to foster and develop cultural and ethnic affairs for young Greeks, GOYANZ has grown into a 400 member organisation involved in various community activities including running the local Greek football and netball club, Wellington Olympic AFC. GOYANZ also produces a bimonthly magazine Ta Matia tou Kosmou, has a regular Sunday radio programme as well as running a popular website www.goyanz.org.nz. Other activities include the GOYANZ picnic, Miss GOYANZ annual ball, Greek youth social events and the GOYANZ children s Christmas party.
