Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Thunder Bay Membership By-law General 1.0 This by-law comes into effect on January 1, 2009 as approved at the Annual General Assembly held on November 9, 2008. 1.1 Membership is one the main sources of income for the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. Your membership maintains the operation of the Church on a weekly basis. You can pay your membership fees by cash or cheque every Sunday following the Divine Liturgy. All membership fees are tax deductible. Definitions 2.0 Member in Good Standing: A member in good standing has in the past 3 years, paid their membership dues for 2 consecutive years. 2.1 New Member in Good Standing: A new member is one who is joining our Parish for the first time. A new member in good standing has paid their membership dues in the current year and preceding year. 2.2 Non-Member Non-members may attend the Annual General Assembly but are not able to participate or vote on any matter. When a non-member requires the use of the Church for a Sacrament, please refer to the appropriate application for financial obligations. Use of the Church Hall is $400 per event and subject to approval by the Board of Directors. Categories 3.0 Regular Member $200 per person Regular members may - attend, participate and vote at the Annual General Assembly - serve as a member on all committees and hold elected office on the Board of Directors. - participate and perform in holy sacraments - reduced rate for hall rental 4.0 Enhanced Member Additional $360 per person includes all the benefits of a Regular Membership PLUS - use of candles - pass on collection tray - various payment plans available - one free use of the community hall per year. Each additional use at regular member rate 5.0 Student Member $75 per person 18 and over and in full time attendance at school Student members may - attend, participate and vote at the Annual General Assembly - serve as a member on all committees and hold elected office on the Board of Directors. - participate and perform in Holy Sacraments. 6.0 Associate Member $100 per person A non-orthodox spouse of a member in good standing. Associate Members may join committees, attend and partake in discussions at the Annual General Meeting but cannot: - hold elected office - vote at the Annual General Meeting - partake in Holy Sacraments. From the Parable of the Talents found in the Gospel according to St. Matthew, you can understand that giving is a spiritual matter and a personal responsibility. Although giving is completely between the believer and the Lord, per principles in Holy Scripture and church tradition, it is suggested that parishioners give 10% of their annual net income. Obviously, charity is placed on a voluntary basis, but we know that God loves a cheerful giver. 3

JANUARY 6: HOLY THEOPHANY OF OUR LORD Theophany is the Feast which reveals the Most Holy Trinity to the world through the Baptism of the Lord (Mt.3:13-17; Mark 1:9-11; Luke 3:21-22). God the Father spoke from Heaven about the Son, the Son was baptized by the St John the Forerunner, and the Holy Spirit descended upon the Son in the form of a dove. From ancient times this Feast was called the Day of Illumination and the Feast of Lights, since God is Light and has appeared to illumine "those who sat in darkness," and "in the region of the shadow of death" (Mt.4:16), and to save the fallen race of mankind by grace. In the ancient Church it was the custom to baptize catechumens at the Vespers of Theophany, so that Baptism also is revealed as the spiritual illumination of mankind. The origin of the Feast of Theophany goes back to Apostolic times, and it is mentioned in The Apostolic Constitutions (Book V:13). From the second century we have the testimony of St Clement of Alexandria concerning the celebration of the Baptism of the Lord, and the night vigil before this Feast. There is a third century dialogue about the services for Theophany between the holy martyr Hippolytus and St Gregory the Wonderworker. In the following centuries, from the fourth to ninth century, all the great Fathers of the Church: Gregory the Theologian, John Chrysostom, Ambrose of Milan, John of Damascus, commented on the Feast of Theophany. The monks Joseph the Studite, Theophanes and Byzantios composed much liturgical music for this Feast, which is sung at Orthodox services even today. St John of Damascus said that the Lord was baptized, not because He Himself had need for cleansing, but "to bury human sin by water," to fulfill the Law, to reveal the mystery of the Holy Trinity, and finally, to sanctify "the nature of water" and to offer us the form and example of Baptism. On the Feast of the Baptism of Christ, the Holy Church proclaims our faith in the most sublime mystery, incomprehensible to human intellect, of one God in three Persons. It teaches us to confess and glorify the Holy Trinity, one in Essence and Indivisible. It exposes and overthrows the errors of ancient teachings, which attempted to explain the Creator of the world by reason, and in human terms. The Church shows the necessity of Baptism for believers in Christ, and it inspires us with a sense of deep gratitude for the illumination and purification of our sinful nature. The Church teaches that our salvation and cleansing from sin is possible only by the power of the grace of the Holy Spirit, therefore it is necessary to preserve worthily these gifts of the grace of holy Baptism, keeping clean this priceless garb, for "As many as have been baptized into Christ, have put on Christ" (Gal 3:27). Ο ίδηνο ν Θεόο καο απνθαιύπηεηαη σο Τξηάδα θαη απηό απνηειεί θνξπθαίν γεγνλόο ενξηήο ζηε δσή καο. Ο Θεόο είλαη Τξηαδηθόο, αιιά θαη κνλαδηθόο. Είλαη ηξία μερσξηζηά πξόζσπα, κε ηηο δηθέο ηνπο ηδηόηεηεο θαη ην δηθό ηνπο όλνκα, αιιά ηαπηόρξνλα είλαη κία νπζία θαη θύζε. Έηζη έθακε θη εκάο ηνπο αλζξώπνπο. Όινη έρνπκε δηαθνξεηηθά ραξαθηεξηζηηθά θαη ηδηόηεηεο, ζσκαηηθέο θαη ςπρηθέο. Καλείο καο δελ είλαη όκνηνο κε ηνλ άιιν. Όινη όκσο αλήθνπκε ζην αλζξώπηλν γέλνο, είκαζηε ηεο απηήο θύζεο θαη νπζίαο. Γελληόκαζηε ίδηα, ηξεθόκαζηε ίδηα, θάκνπκε νηθνγέλεηα ίδηα, πεζαίλνπκε ίδηα. Απηό ζεκαίλεη όηη είκαζηε εηθόλεο ηνπ Θενύ. Όπσο ηα ηξία πξόζσπα ηεο Αγίαο Τξηάδνο πεξηρσξνύληαη ην έλα ζην άιιν, ελ αγάπε θαη ελ ειεπζεξία, ρσξίο λα ράλνπλ ηελ ηδηνπξνζσπία ηνπο, λα παύνπλ λα είλαη δειαδή μερσξηζηά πξόζσπα, έηζη θη εκείο νη άλζξσπνη θαινύκαζηε από ηνλ Επηθαλέληα Θεό λα πεξηρσξνύκαζηε, λα θνηλσλνύκε ν έλαο ηνλ άιιν, ελ ειεπζεξία θαη αγάπε, ρσξίο λα ράλνπκε ηελ ηδηνπξνζσπία καο! Καη ηνύην έρεη κεγάιε ζεκαζία, ηδίσο ζηελ επνρή καο. Ο άλζξσπνο, παξαζπξκέλνο από ηνπο δηάθνξνπο ζεζκνύο θαη ηξόπνπο πνπ ν παγθνζκηνπνηεκέλνο πνιηηηζκόο επηβάιιεη, μερλά όηη είλαη δηαθνξεηηθόο. Γίλεηαη νκνηόκνξθνο θαη ράλεη ηελ πξνζσπηθόηεηά ηνπ. Πνξεύεηαη όρη καδί κε ηνπο άιινπο, αιιά ίδηνο κε ηνπο άιινπο, ρσξίο λα ζέιεη λα δηαθέξεη. Δηαθαηέρεηαη από κία ηάζε ηαύηηζεο κε ηνλ θόζκν, ρσξίο λα ζπλεηδεηνπνηεί όηη είλαη κνλαδηθήο αμίαο εηθόλα Θενύ. Ο Επηθαλείο Τξηαδηθόο Θεόο καο θαιεί λα θαηαλνήζνπκε όηη ρξεηάδεηαη λα πξνζθέξνπκε αγάπε ζηνλ άιιν, αιιά ηαπηόρξνλα λα πνξεπόκαζηε κε ειεπζεξία, αλαδεηώληαο ηα ηδηαίηεξα ραξαθηεξηζηηθά καο πνπ δίλνπλ πξαγκαηηθό λόεκα ζηε δσή καο. Απηό άιισζηε έθεξε ν Φξηζηόο ζηνλ θόζκν. Τνλ ζεβαζκό ζηελ κνλαδηθή πξνζσπηθόηεηα ηνπ θαζελόο, ηελ ζπζία θαη ηελ δσξεάλ ζσηεξία γηα ηνλ θαζέλα πξνζσπηθά. Καη κ' απηό ηνλ ηξόπν πνξεύεηαη ε Εθθιεζία αλά ηνπο αηώλεο. Δηαθξίλνληαο ζηνλ θαζέλα ηα ραξίζκαηά ηνπ, αιιά θαη δεηώληαο ηελ θνηλσλία κε ηνλ άιιν, κέζα από ηελ αγάπε. Απηό απνηειεί θαη ηελ πξαγκαηηθή κίκεζε ηνπ Φξηζηνύ. Όκσο ε Επηθάλεηα ηνπ Θενύ θέξεη θαη έλα άιιν ζηνηρείν, ην Φσο. Ο Τξηαδηθόο Θεόο σο Φσο ιάκπεη ελ ησ θόζκσ θαη θσηίδεη ηνλ θαζέλαλ από καο. Αγηάδεη όιε ηελ θηίζε, ηα ύδαηα, ηνλ πνηακό, ηελ ζάιαζζα, ηα πάληα, δείρλνληαο ηνλ πξαγκαηηθό ζθνπό ηεο Δεκηνπξγίαο, πνπ δελ είλαη άιινο από ηνλ Φσηηζκό θαη ηνλ Αγηαζκό ηεο. Γη' απηό ηεινύκε ηνλ Μέγα Αγηαζκό, ξίρλνληαο ηνλ Σηαπξό ηνπ Κπξίνπ ζηα ύδαηα, γηα λα δείμνπκε ζπκβνιηθά ηελ πίζηε καο ζην Φσο θαη ηελ αμία ηεο θηίζεο θαη ηνπ αλζξώπνπ. Καη είλαη ε θαηάδπζε ηνπ Σηαπξνύ κηα ζησπειή ππόκλεζε ζε όινπο, όηη ν θόζκνο δελ αγηάδεηαη κε ιόγηα, αιιά κε ηελ αγάπε θαη ηελ ζπζία πνπ ν Σηαπξόο ηνπ Κπξίνπ θέξεη. Σήκεξα, πεξηζζόηεξν παξά πνηέ, έρνπκε αλάγθε ην Αιεζηλόλ Φσο πνπ είλαη ν Φξηζηόο. Ζνύκε ζε έλαλ θόζκν εζθνηηζκέλν από ηελ ακαξηία θαη ηελ αδηθία. Εξγαδόκαζηε κε ππεξβνιηθό άγρνο θαη αζηακάηεηα, γηα λα δηαζθεδάδνπκε άκεηξα θαη λα ζπλερίδεηαη ε δσή καο κέζα ζηελ θηιαπηία θαη ηελ θηιεδνλία. Ταπηίδνπκε ηελ επηηπρία κε θάζε κέζν πιηθό θαη αγλννύκε ηελ εζώηεξε αλάγθε καο γηα ιάκςε θαη πλεπκαηηθή αλάηαζε. Τν Φσο είλαη απαξαίηεην γηα ηελ δσή. Θεξκαίλεη, θαξπνγνλεί ζηνλ θόζκν, δίδεη ραξά, βνεζά ζηελ θνηλσλία ησλ αλζξώπσλ. Τν πλεπκαηηθό άθηηζην Φσο πνπ ν Τξηαδηθόο Θεόο ζην πξόζσπν ηνπ Φξηζηνύ πξνζθέξεη ζηνλ θόζκν δίδεη κηαλ άιιε δσή, ηελ εζσηεξηθή, ηελ ραξά ηεο θαξδηάο, ηελ δύλακε ηεο αγάπεο, ηελ αίζζεζε ηεο ειεπζεξίαο από ηα πάζε, αιιά θαη από ό,ηη καο ρσξίδεη από ηνλ Θεό θαη ηνλ ζπλάλζξσπν. Καη ε θαξδηά πνπ είλαη θσηηζκέλε δελ κπνξεί παξά λα είλαη θαη επηπρηζκέλε, αθξηβώο δηόηη κέζα ηεο θαηνηθεί ν Θεόο. Έρνπκε ινηπόλ ζήκεξα ηελ αλάγθε κηαο Επηθάλεηαο ζηε δσή καο. Καη ε Επηθάλεηα ηνπ Θενύ είλαη πξνζσπηθή ζηνλ θαζέλαλ καο. Αξθεί λα αλαδεηνύκε ην Φσο θαη ηνλ Αγηαζκό. Αξθεί λα ζπλεηδεηνπνηνύκε πόζν ζπνπδαίν είλαη ην θσηηζκέλν αλζξώπηλν πξόζσπν θαη πόζν αμίδεη θαλείο λα αγσληζηεί πλεπκαηηθά γηα λα βηώζεη ηνλ Τξηαδηθό Θεό, ελ ειεπζεξία θαη αγάπε, ζην πξόζσπν ησλ ʼιισλ. 12 Things I Wish I d Known First Visit to an Orthodox Church By Frederica Matthewes-Green Orthodox worship is different! Some of these differences are apparent, if perplexing, from the first moment you walk in a church. Others become noticeable only over time. Here is some information that may help you feel more at home in Orthodox worship twelve things I wish I d known before my first visit to an Orthodox church. #8. Music, music, music. About seventy-five percent of the service is congregational singing. Traditionally, Orthodox use no instruments, although some churches will have organs. Usually a small choir leads the people in a cappella harmony, with the level of congregational response varying from parish to parish. The style of music varies as well, from very Orientalsounding solo chant in an Arabic church to more Western-sounding four-part harmony in a Russian church, with lots of variation in between. This constant singing is a little overwhelming at first; it feels like getting on the first step of an escalator and being carried along in a rush until you step off ninety minutes later. It has been fairly said that the liturgy is one continuous song. What keeps this from being exhausting is that it s pretty much the *same* song every week. Relatively little changes from Sunday to Sunday; the same prayers and hymns appear in the same places, and before long you know it by heart. Then you fall into the presence of God in a way you never can when flipping from prayer book to bulletin to hymnal. 8
