Much appreciation is extended to luncheon sponsor Costa Nicopoulos. Philoptochos wants all seniors to attend the next luncheon, where they can enjoy a delicious meal and have fun playing bingo. You are invited to become a proud participant in the organization, attend meetings, and join in helping the members help others. Contact President Connie Tiliakos for more details. ANNUAL CUTTING OF THE VASILOPITA This annual event will follow Divine Liturgy next Sunday, January 17. Philoptochos chapters across the Archdiocese host Vasilopita events in honor of Saint Basil the Great to benefit Saint Basil Academy in Garrison, New York. A most inspiring tradition of the Greek Orthodox Church, the observance of Vasilopita in commemoration of Saint Basil's feast day combines the happiness of the New Year with the glory of the birth of Christ and the Epiphany. Known as Vasilopita Observance, the event symbolizes the joy of life everlasting. After the Vasilopita presentation in church, all parishioners are invited to receive a piece of Saint Basil s Bread in the Coffee Room. REGULAR GENERAL ASSEMBLY The first 2016 General Assembly will be held in the Hellenic Cultural Center SUNDAY, JANUARY 24, 2016, immediately following Divine Liturgy. The agenda will include discussion and vote on the Proposed Budget for 2016, as well as regular business items. All members in Good Standing are encouraged to attend. SUNDAY, JANUARY 3 ATTENDANCE 160 ~ CANDLE AND TRAY COLLECTIONS $832

BLESSING OF HOMES To have your home and/or business blessed, fill out the enclosed form and return it to the Cathedral office as soon as possible. Father George would like to bless as many homes as possible and for this reason wishes to adhere to a tight schedule. He kindly asks that you not expect him to stay for a meal and thanks you in advance for understanding. DAUGHTERS MEETING THIS SATURDAY The Daughters of Penelope meeting will be Saturday, January 16, beginning at 1:30 pm in the Coffee Room. District Governor Johanna Pappas from Houston, Texas, will attend. FAMILY GRAS NEXT SUNDAY Please note a schedule change for the Community Wide Family Day Pot Luck Luncheon, originally slated for Sunday, January 24. The New Orleans theme "Family Gras" is now rescheduled for Sunday, January 17, and Chairperson Vicki McCallef asks volunteers to bring New Orleans/Southern Style pot luck dishes to keep with the theme. In conjunction with the luncheon, a HOPE & JOY Valentine craft project will be completed during the event. Also, Vicki is coordinating a shoe box Mardi Gras float centerpiece competition among the community youth groups. Three volunteers will judge the entries and award the participants. To facilitate these numerous plans, there will be NO GREEK SCHOOL that day. Additionally, January 17 is Philoptochos Vasilopita Sunday. With so many fantastic activities slated next Sunday, the ECYM Committee strongly encourages you to pack up your families and come for a delightful outing filled with food, fun, and fellowship. Contact Vicki McCallef at vmmccallef@yaho.com for "Family Gras" details and to bring a dish. HELLENIC DANCE FESTIVAL 2016 The Hellenic Dance Festival (HDF) will be held in sunny Orlando, Florida, on January 15-18, 2016, at Shingle Creek Resort. And, this year the Hellenic Dancers of New Orleans will be among the over thirty-five (35) groups performing traditional dances of Greece and spiritual enrichment activities. The HDF was organized on January 14, 2000, through the sincere desire of His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios of Atlanta to see the cultural heritage of Hellenism promoted and developed through the parishioners of the Metropolis. The purpose of this event is to bring together Orthodox families through dance, music, and fellowship; to perpetuate the Hellenic Orthodox tradition; to develop an awareness and appreciation for Hellenic and Orthodox culture and tradition through dance and music; and to inspire youth and young adults of the Metropolis of Atlanta to enhance their experience and love of the Orthodox Church and the Hellenic Culture. REAL ESTATE COMMITTEE MEETING Real Estate Committee members should note a time change for the meeting scheduled Tuesday, January 19, 2016. It will begin at 6:30 pm instead of 7:00 pm. Message from Father George THE SUNDAY AFTER THEOPHANY Saint Gregory of Nyssa says: Jesus enters the filthy (sinful) waters of the world and when He comes out, brings up (purifies) the entire world with Him. The symbol of purity and salvation through water is seen in many ways in the Orthodox Christian Baptism service, and it is also seen in the Service of the Aghiasmos (Blessing of the Waters), the service in which we pray that God through His All-Holy Spirit might sanctify the waters so that those, who drink it or sprinkle it in their homes, may enjoy God s rich blessings and His healing touch. Through Holy Scripture we see signs that the Forerunner proclaims Jesus is the Son of God, the Messiah. At the Baptism in the Jordan when Jesus comes up out of the waters of the river, the fullness of God in Trinity is revealed. These are signs to the world that Jesus is truly the Messiah, the Son of God. He is God and commissioned by God through the Spirit to begin His earthly ministry. The Holy Spirit is God, present before all ages with God the Father and God the Son as proclaimed in the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed. The Holy Spirit lit upon Jesus in the form of a Dove at the Baptism and essentially commissioned Jesus to begin His Earthly Ministry of preaching, teaching, and healing. Christ s first message to the people of the world in this new ministry is: Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. In response to this the Orthodox Study Bible says: Christ s first word, like that of John the Baptist, is repent because repentance is necessary to enter and continue in His new way of life. Repentance is man s turning from himself to God. The preparation for the people of Israel is repentance. The preparation for us all to enter God s Heavenly Kingdom is repentance. Repentance is complete turnaround, a radical change of one s spirit, mind, and heart. It is a complete reorientation of one s life and being and the necessary first step on the way of the Lord. With this in mind, we should keep this first word of our Lord s first public teaching alive in our hearts and pray about it. We should allow the grace of God to work in us as we consciously strive for repentance. By nature as human beings, we have the tendency to be self-centered. As we strive for repentance, may we grow in our relationship with Jesus so we might change our spirit, mind, and heart to completely re-orient our whole life and being to truly be Christ centered, not self-centered, for this is the beginning of an honest life in Christ. SAVE THE DATE! The Cathedral Family is asked to mark their calendars for April 2 and 3, 2016, when His Grace Bishop Gregory of Nyssa will be in New Orleans as guest speaker for the Spring Family Lenten Retreat on Saturday and a Hierarchal Liturgy on Sunday.

SUNDAY COFFEE HOUR SPONSORS A form requesting monthly coffee hour sponsorships for the New Year is enclosed. The program is a Parish Council effort to encourage greater fellowship among parishioners by asking individuals or groups to provide refreshments after church services. Apolytikion of Epiphany Tone 1 As You were baptized in the Jordan, O Lord, the worship of the Trinity was revealed, for the Father s voice bore witness to You, calling You His Beloved Son; and the Spirit, in the form of a dove, confirmed the security of the word. Christ God, who has appeared to us and gave light to the world, glory to You. Apolytikion of the Holy Trinity Plagal Tone 4 Blessed are You, O Christ our God, who made fishermen all-wise, sending upon them the Holy Spirit and, through them, netting the world. THE EPISTLE Ephesians 4:7-13 Let your mercy, O Lord, be upon us. Verse: Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous. BRETHREN, grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ's gift. Therefore it is said, "When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men." (in saying, "He ascended," what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is he who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.) And his gifts were that some should be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. THE GOSPEL Matthew 4:12-17 At that time, Jesus heard that John had been arrested, He withdrew into Galilee; and leaving Nazareth He went and dwelt in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: "The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, toward the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles, the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned." From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."
