DECEMBER 25:THE NATIVITY OF OUR LORD GOD AND SAVIOUR JESUS CHRIST Great anticipation is building as we come closer to Christmas Day. The old remember the happy times in their youth when families gathered to celebrate, and the young ones have hopes for the presents and blessings that will be exchanged. This is the one time of the year that many give gifts of charity to those who are financially disadvantaged, remembering God's manifold blessings. Others surrender their burdens and sorrows for the joy that comes with the knowledge that "a Child is born" to the world, a Child Who brings light, solace and peace into the farthest corners of the earth. In this time of the year, as we rush from store to store searching for the perfect gift for our love ones, let us remember that this is the season when the Church hymns out tidings of great joy announcing that Christ is born! "Christ is born; glorify Him! Christ comes from heaven; go to meet Him! Christ is on earth; be exalted! Sing to the Lord, all the earth! And praise Him in gladness, O people, for He has been glorified!" This hymn describes how Orthodox Christians joyfully give thanks to the gift of Christ's miraculous Incarnation. The hymn calls us to act in a very conscious and decisive manner. As Christians we live our Faith and witness it to the world through our gladness and joy; like the single light burning brightly in the darkness. This time of the year is also a time of humility, which today's society has forgotten with the commercialization of this Christ-mass day. The Theotokos responded in humility when she consented to bear the Christ-child. Christ chose a humble cave in which to be born and become Man. The shepherds bowed in reverence and humility to the newborn King. The three wise kings traveled vast distances to pay homage to a baby in a cave used to shelter farm animals. O, what great and moving images these thoughts build! We, like the foreign kings and pure hearted Theotokos, must respond to our Christian Faith in simple humility at all times, and especially now during the Advent Season. Christ's birthplace also reminds us that He depends upon each of us to welcome Him in our very homes, and to make Him part of our lives and families. Rejoice over the message of humility, life, love, and the hope that Christ's life offers us. Do not let your hearts be cold and stomachs sated with the lifeless material things gathered and food eaten. 25 ΔΕΚΕΜΒΡΙΟΥ: Η ΓΕΝΝΗΣΙΣ ΤΟΥ ΚΥΡΙΟΥ ΚΑΙ ΘΕΟΥ ΚΑΙ ΣΩΤΗΡΟΣ ΗΜΩΝ ΙΗΣΟΥ ΧΡΙΣΤΟΥ Ο Μέγας Βασίλειος θαυμάζοντας το γεγονός της Γεννήσεως του Χριστού, θέτει στο στόμα της Παναγίας τα ακόλουθα λόγια: «Πως να Σε ονομάσω εγώ, θαυμαστό μου βρέφος; Τι θνητό όνομα να δώσω στον καρπό του Αγίου Πνεύματος; Να Σου προσφέρω θυμίαμα ή γάλα; Έχεις ανάγκη από τις μητρικές μου φροντίδες, ή να πέσω στα πόδια Σου και να Σε λατρεύω; Τι ανεξήγητη αντίθεση; 0 ουρανός είναι ο θρόνος Σου κι εγώ σε τοποθέτησα στα γόνατα μου. Σε βλέπω στην γη κι όμως δεν άφησες τον ουρανό. 0 ουρανός είναι εκεί, όπου ευρίσκεσαι Εσύ». Την απορία και την έκπληξη της Παναγίας συμμερίζεται και άγιος Βασίλειος. Και προσπαθώντας να βρει το μυστικό που πέτυχε την ένωση τόσο αντιθέτων πραγμάτων, καταλήγει ότι είναι Η ΤΑΠΕΙΝΩΣΗ! Από ταπείνωση ο Θεός έγινε άνθρωπος! Από την ταπείνωση Του η γη έγινε ουρανός! Δεν ανέβηκε ο άνθρωπος στον ουρανό. Κατέβηκε ο Θεός στην γη. Και έτσι μας έμαθε έμπρακτα, πως μπορεί η γη, από τόπος εξορίας να γίνει παράδεισος. Από ζούγκλα, να γίνει Βασιλεία του Θεού. Γι' αυτό και οι πρώτοι, που αξιώθηκαν να Τον προσκυνήσουν, ήταν οι ταπεινοί ποιμένες. Και οι γεμάτοι ταπεινό και ειλικρινές φρόνημα αναζήτησης της αλήθειας, «μάγοι εξ ανατολών». Αυτή η αρετή της Ταπείνωσης είναι το μεγάλο μήνυμα της εορτής των Χριστουγέννων. Μόνο ο άνθρωπος που καλλιεργεί και αγαπάει αυτή την αρετή, μπορεί κάπως να νιώσει, τι έγινε εκείνη την παγωμένη νύχτα του Δεκέμβρη στην Βηθλεέμ της Ιουδαίας. Και μόνο με αυτή την αρετή, μπορεί να αξιωθεί να δεχθεί στην καρδιά του τον Νεογέννητο Βασιλέα και Σωτήρα Χριστό. Αγίου Εφραίμ του Σύρου FOOD DRIVE! Εσύ ετοίμασες την Φάτνη σου; Αναρωτηθήκαμε ποτέ, γιατί άραγε ο Χριστός διάλεξε να γεννηθεί μέσα στο σπήλαιο και να γείρει, μετά την ενανθρώπησή Του, μέσα στην φάτνη; Γιατί δεν γεννήθηκε μέσα σε κάποιο σπίτι, φτωχικό και ταπεινό έστω; Ο Θεός ως άνθρωπος στο πρόσωπο του Χριστού ήλθε και έζησε στην γη ταπεινά κι απαρατήρητα. Ποια όμως ανάγκη εξυπηρέτησε ο συγκεκριμένος τρόπος της Γέννησής Του; Διότι, αν γεννιόταν σε κάποιο σπίτι, πάλι απαρατήρητος θα περνούσε και πάλι ταπεινός θα ήταν. Χειρότερο μέρος από το σπήλαιο και την φάτνη δεν υπήρχε, για να δει το φως της ημέρας, ή μάλλον το λαμπύρισμα των άστρων, ο νεογέννητος Μεσσίας! Για τον κάθε κοινό θνητό θα ήταν ντροπή να γεννηθεί σε στάβλο, πόσο μάλλον για τον ίδιο τον Θεό. Αυτό ακριβώς ήθελε όμως να τονίσει ευθύς εξ αρχής ο Κύριος: ότι παρόλο που είναι Θεός, ταπεινώθηκε και έλαβε ανθρώπινη υπόσταση, και αυτή η Θεία ταπείνωση είναι πολύ μεγαλύτερη από το να γεννηθεί κάποιος απλός άνθρωπος μέσα σ έναν κρύο στάβλο. Διάλεξε να γεννηθεί μέσα στο σπήλαιο και όχι σε κανονικό στάβλο, για να μας δείξει ότι ο Θεός δεν κατοικεί μέσα σε χειροποίητους ναούς, αλλά μέσα στις καρδιές όσων αναγνωρίζουν στον εαυτό τους την αναξιότητα να Τον δεχθούν και ζουν ταπεινά, χωρίς κομπασμούς και αυτοπροβολές. Διάλεξε να ανακλιθεί στην φάτνη των αλόγων, για να μας δείξει ότι ήλθε και κατοίκησε μέσα στην α-λογία του κόσμου, ενός κόσμου που κυριαρχούνταν (και μέχρι σήμερα, δυστυχώς, κυριαρχείται) από την αμαρτία, που είναι μωρία στα μάτια του Θεού. Μέσα στην βαβούρα της απογραφής δεν βρέθηκε κατάλυμα για τον νεογέννητο Χριστό, παρά μόνο μια αχυρένια αγκάλη στην φάτνη των αλόγων. Και μέσα στην παραζάλη της αμαρτίας και της υποκρισίας δεν τον αποδέχθηκε ο περιούσιος λαός Του, εκτός από μερικές ταπεινές και συντριμμένες καρδιές απλών ψαράδων, τελωνών και πορνών, που διέθεταν το άχυρο της ταπείνωσης και τον ενστερνίστηκαν ως Διδάσκαλο και σωτήρα. Επέλεξε να γίνουν όλα έτσι, ώστε με την επίσκεψη των Μάγων να γίνει φανερό ποιος είναι ο Βασιλεύς. Οι μακρινοί επισκέπτες παρακάμπτουν στο πρόσωπο του Ηρώδη κάθε επίγεια δόξα και αξίωμα και έρχονται, οι σοφοί του κόσμου, να προσφέρουν τα δώρα τους σ Αυτόν που Του αξίζει κάθε δόξα, τιμή και προσκύνηση, στο άσημο Βρέφος, στον προ αιώνων Θεό. Μέσα στην σύγχρονη βαβούρα, μέσα στην ζάλη της ετοιμασίας των φαγητών και των γλυκισμάτων, μέσα στην α-λογία των κοσμικών εκδηλώσεων, θα μείνει και πάλι έξω από τις δραστηριότητες των ανθρώπων. Θα ψάξει ξανά για κάποιο σκοτεινό σπήλαιο αυτογνωσίας, που να διαθέτει μια φάτνη ταπείνωσης με λίγο άχυρο γνήσιας αγάπης, κι εκεί θα αναπαυθεί, στις καρδιές κάποιων ανθρώπων που θα ζήσουν και φέτος αυτό το μέγα Μυστήριο της Θείας Ενανθρωπήσεως και θα ψελλίσουν μυστικά, μαζί με τους Αγγέλους, το «Δόξα εν Υψίστοις Θεώ». Επί δύο χιλιάδες χρόνια κάνει ακριβώς το ίδιο, κάθε ημέρα και κάθε ώρα: Ψάχνει για Φάτνη! Όταν την εντοπίσει, εκεί μένει, και λυπάται όταν δει πως αυτή απουσιάζει. Εδώ και αρκετά χρόνια, αυτή είναι η αγωνία μου, αν δηλαδή διαθέτω την απαιτούμενη φάτνη της ταπείνωσης μέσα στο σπήλαιο της καρδιάς μου και αν την έχω κοσμήσει αρκετά με το άχυρο της αληθινής αγάπης Αλήθεια, εσύ ετοίμασες την Φάτνη σου; --- Πηγή: Απλά και Ορθόδοξα: http://xerouveim.blogspot.ca/2009/12/blog-post_18.html 7

Have You Prepared Your Manger? By Fr. Cherubim Veletza Have you ever wondered, why did Christ choose to be born in a cave and be placed, after His incarnation, in a manger? Why wasn't He born in a house, even if it was poor and humble? God as man in the person of Christ came and lived on earth humbly and undetected. But what need did His particular mode of birth serve? For, if He was born in a house, He would still be undetected and still humble. There was no place worse than a cave and a manger, for the newborn Messiah to see the light of day, or the shimmer of the stars. For any common man it would be a shame to be born in a stable, let alone God Himself. Yet this is exactly what the Lord wanted to emphasize from the beginning: that although He was God, He humbled Himself and took on a human hypostasis, and this divine humbling is much greater than simply a man being born inside a cold stable. He chose to be born in a cave and not a normal stable, to show that God does not dwell in temples made with hands, but in the hearts of those who recognize their unworthiness to receive Him and live humbly, without boasting and selfpromotion. He chose to be placed in a manger of irrational animals, to show us that He came to dwell in this irrational world, a world that was dominated (and unfortunately still dominated) by sin and unbelief, which is foolishness in God's eyes. Amid the hubbub of the census, accommodation for the newborn Christ could not be found, except in the embrace of the straw manger of irrational animals. And in the maelstrom of sin and hypocrisy He was not accepted by His chosen people, except for the few humbled and crushed hearts of simple fishermen, tax collectors and prostitutes, who had the straw of humility and embraced Him as Master and Savior. He chose for all these things to take place in this way, so that with the visit from the Magi it would not be obvious who the King was. These distant visitors bypassed the person of Herod and every earthly glory and dignity and, these wise men according to the world, came to offer their gifts to Him Who deserves all glory and honor and worship, the obscure infant, the pre-eternal God. In the modern hubbub, in the dizziness of the preparation of various dishes and sweets, in the irrationality of worldly events, He will again remain outside of human activities. He will look again for some dark cave of self-knowledge, which has a manger of humility with a little straw of genuine love, and there He will rest in the hearts of certain people who will live once again this year in the great Mystery of the Divine Incarnation, and they will secretly chant, along with the Angels, the "Glory to God in the Highest...". For two thousand years He is doing exactly the same thing, every day and every hour: He is looking for a Manger! When He locates it, He will remain there, and He is saddened when He sees that He is absent. For several years, this is my anxiety, that is, if I have the required humility for a manger in the cave of my heart, and if I have adorned it enough with the straw of true humility. Really, have you prepared your Manger? 8
