Dialogue with White On beholding the works in this meeting in Mykonos, one realizes that the dialogue is in fact dual. The sculptor Praxitelis Tzanoulinos and the painter Thrasos Avaritsiotis are invited to converse with the white of the Cycladic landscape. But the conversation in this encounter will only take place when their works first come together. Starting point for Tzanoulinos s sculptural seashells is nature but they explore their form within their very substance, conversing with Avaritsiotis s expressionistic compositions that struggle to fill the painterly void, relying only on the basic material of their medium colour. The gestural style of Avaritsiotis s trees annuls the barely-shaped image and converses with the incisions on Tzanoulinos s totemic complexes. Tzanoulinos s silent female torsos seem to take shape as they emerge from their amorphous raw material and find their correspondence in Avaritsiotis s anthropomorphic beehives that project through painterly seas. In Tzanoulinos s biomorphic trees the fixation with the texture of metal claims pride of place, in parity with their form, and is reflected in those of Avaritsiotis s works in which the lines erode the surface like roots, just as the veinous lines of prehistoric painting draw figures through chance fissures of a rock. In the works of both Tzanoulinos and Avaritsiotis the love of fragments that give away Sculpture converses with the love of bold gesture that comes close to the heart of Painting. The two artists concern for rendering the world of their own forms, without ever forgetting the nature of their medium, leads to Abstraction. To the same abstraction attained by the impact of the resolute Greek light on the white of Mykonos, which thus becomes a spiritual topos, the white of Art.
