Sydney s Greek Australian community will celebrate Greek Independence Day on Sunday, 25 March, with a wreath-laying ceremony at the ANZAC War Memorial at Martin Place. This will be followed by a procession to the Domain, including the Greek Orthodox Colleges and the Greek Afternoon Schools. In the presence of His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos and other leaders of the community, the celebration will culminate in a special program of traditional Greek dancing and speeches. St Euphemia High School Newsletter March 2014 Year 7 Parent / Teacher Night Parents and caregivers of Year 7 students are invited to attend the Parent/Teacher Evening interviews that will be held on Wednesday, 12 March 2014 between 3 30 and 6 30 pm. This is an excellent opportunity for parents and caregivers of Year 7 to meet their children s teachers and discuss their progress. Students will receive a booking sheet and are required to book appointments with their teachers. Year 12 Half Yearly Examinations On Monday, 10 March 2014, Year 12 students will begin their Half Yearly Examinations. All students should have begun studying for these examinations and we wish them good luck. Church Attendance Years 9 & 10: Sunday, 9 March at 9. 30am SWSSA Swimming Carnival All first, second and third finalists from the St. Euphemia College swimming carnival will participate in the regional SWISSA Carnival to be held on Friday, 8 March. We wish all competitors good luck! 25 th March There will be no school on Tuesday, 25 March as we celebrate the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary and Greek Independence Day. Absences & early Leavers When students are absent from school, parents should ring the school or send an email to ehantes@steuphemia.nsw.edu.au Upon their return to school, students must submit a note signed by the parent/caregiver explaining their absence. When students are late to school they should also bring a note with an explanation of the reason. Also, students are not allowed to sign themselves out early. They can only be signed out by a parent/caregiver. Pg. 03
Independence Day March St. Euphemia College welcomes all parents, caregivers and friends to join in the Greek National Independence Day Celebrations on Sunday, 23 March. It is expected that Years 1 to 12 students will attend the celebrations, wearing their summer uniform, including their hat and blazer. No jumpers are to be worn. The uniform shop will be open every Tuesday and Thursday between 2 00pm 4 00pm. Students who have paid to go on the buses provided by the School need to be at school by 11 45am. All students are to remain with the school till the end of the celebrations, which will conclude at approximately 4 30pm. The ceremony will begin at Martin Place, followed by a procession along King Street and concluding with celebrations at the Domain. Furthermore, this day is of religious significance as we celebrate the Annunciation of the Theotokos. We look forward to seeing all the families of St. Euphemia College at Church on Sunday morning to commemorate this important day. Any student who is unable to attend the march must ask for approved leave from the Principal. Further details will be given to students closer to the day. Pg. 04
Year 7 Peer Support Camp On 3 February, we departed for our peer support camp to Tea Gardens. We boarded the bus in anticipation as some of us were thrilled to have three days free of our parents while others wondered what was this so called peer support camp. After three and a half hours on the bus, we spotted an enormous rock that looked like Ayres Rock. Friendly staff welcomed us with enormous smiles. We happily went with our groups and peer support leaders. With help and encouragement from our peer support leaders, we flew in mid air on the Giant Swing, jumped off logs at the Leap of Faith, abseiled off a wall and capsized our canoes! We conquered new and exciting challenges! In the evenings, we participated in activities where we learnt about trust and working as a team. Our peer support leaders also gave us advice about High School. Every Year 7 and 11 student enjoyed a positive and rewarding experience! On behalf of Year 7, we would like to thank Ms Omeros, Mr Papadimatos, Ms Papastamatis, Mr Spanos and our peer support leaders for taking us on this worthwhile experience. APRIL 2014 Religious services will be conducted every evening throughout Holy Week at St. Euphemia church. All the families of the College are encouraged to attend these services to celebrate Easter, the Feast of the Resurrection, which is the most important religious feast of the Christian liturgical calendar. Church Attendance Years 7 & 8: Sunday, 6 April at 9. 30am Holy Communion On Wednesday, 9 April, all students will attend church in the morning, where they will have the opportunity to receive Holy Communion. Students are encouraged to be adequately prepared. End of Term 1 Term 1 ends on Friday, 11 April. We wish all students and their families a Happy Easter and a good holiday! Work Experience An integral part of the Year 10 curriculum is Work Experience. This valuable scheme affords students the opportunity to experience first-hand a career that interests them and assists them in making an accurate decision for their future vocation. Many students return every year and enthusiastically confirm that they eagerly anticipate becoming a preschool teacher, a journalist or engineer. Also, others return and proclaim that the career they had aspired to was not to their liking or expectations and thus choose another career option. We hope Year 10 gains valuable knowledge and insights into their future career when they attend their work experience placements between Monday, 7 April and Friday, 11 April. TERM TWO Students return to school on Tuesday 29 April. They are to begin wearing their winter uniform. During the school holidays students tend to forget school rules regarding hair colouring and upon their return to school become upset when they are told to change back to a natural hair colour. In order to avoid added expenses to families, students should be mindful of school rules regarding no streaks. Pg. 07
ΝΕΑ ΤΟΥ ΓΥΜΝΑΣΙΟΥ Η Επέτειος της Εθνικής μας Ανεξαρτησίας και ο Ευαγγελισμός της Θεοτόκου Η Ελληνοαυστραλιανή κοινότητα θα γιορτάσει την επέτειο της Ανεξαρτησίας την Κυριακή 23 Μαρτίου με κατάθεση στεφάνων στο ΑΝΖΑC War Memorial στο Martin Place. Θα ακολουθήσει παρέλαση προς το Domain από τα Ελληνορθόδοξα Κολλέγια και τα απογευματινά σχολεία. Η γιορτή θα συμπεριλαμβάνει παραδοσιακούς ελληνικούς χορούς και ομιλίες και θα γίνει παρουσία του Σεβασμιωτάτου Αρχιεπισκόπου κ. κ. Στυλιανού και άλλων επισήμων. Συνέντευξη Καθηγητών και Γονέων/Κηδεμόνων Οι γονείς/κηδεμόνες των μαθητών της Α Γυμνασίου παρακαλούνται να παρευρεθούν στην βραδιά συνεντεύξεων Καθηγητών και Γονέων/Κηδεμόνων που θα λάβει χώρα την Τετάρτη, 12 Μαρτίου 2014. Αυτή είναι μία εξαιρετική ευκαιρία για να γνωριστούν οι γονείς/κηδεμόνες της Α Γυμνασίου με τους καθηγητές των μαθητών και να συζητήσουν την πρόοδο των παιδιών τους. Οι μαθητές πρέπει να κλείσουν ραντεβού με τους καθηγητές εκ των προτέρων. Κολυμβητικοί Αγώνες (SWISSA) Οι μαθητές που έλαβαν 1 η, 2 η και 3 η θέση στους σχολικούς αγώνες κολύμβησης, θα πάρουν μέρος στους κολυμβητικούς Αγώνες SWISSA που θα διεξαχθούν την Παρασκευή, 7 Μαρτίου 2014. Ευχόμαστε σε όλους τους συμμετέχοντες καλή επιτυχία! Εξετάσεις Γ Λυκείου Τη Δευτέρα 10 Μαρτίου 2014, οι μαθητές της Γ Λυκείου θα καθίσουν για τις εξετάσεις του Α εξαμήνου. Οι μαθητές θα έπρεπε ήδη να έχουν αρχίσει να προετοιμάζονται γι αυτές τις εξετάσεις. Ευχόμαστε σε όλους τους μαθητές μας Καλή Επιτυχία! Απουσίες και μαθητές που αποχωρούν νωρίς Όταν θα απουσιάσουν μαθητές μας από το σχολείο, οι γονείς είναι υποχρεωμένοι να τηλεφωνήσουν στο σχολείο ή να στείλουν ηλεκτρονικό μήνυμα (email) στην διεύθυνση ehantes@steuphemia.nsw.edu.au Μόλις επιστρέψουν στο σχολείο, οι μαθητές πρέπει να φέρνουν δικαιολογητικό υπογραμμένο από τους γονείς/κηδεμόνες. Όσοι μαθητές φτάνουν στο σχολείο αργοπορημένοι πρέπει επίσης να φέρνουν δικαιολογητικό, που θα εξηγά τους λόγους. Επίσης, οι μαθητές δεν έχουν από μόνοι τους το δικαίωμα να φεύγουν νωρίς από το σχολείο. Για να φύγουν νωρίς πρέπει να έχουν την γραπτή έγκριση των γονέων/κηδεμόνων. Επέτειος 25 ης Μαρτίου Το Κολλέγιο της Αγίας Ευφημίας προσκαλεί όλους τους γονείς/κηδεμόνες και φίλους στον εορτασμό της Εθνικής μας Παλιγγενεσίας, την Κυριακή 23 Μαρτίου. Όλοι οι μαθητές Α Δημοτικού Γ Λυκείου του Κολλεγίου υποχρεούνται να παρευρεθούν, φορώντας την καλοκαιρινή στολή με το σακάκι και το καπέλο. Τα πουλόβερ δεν επιτρέπονται. Το κατάστημα που πουλάει σχολικά είδη (uniform shop) θα είναι ανοιχτό κάθε Τρίτη και Πέμπτη από τις 2.00μ.μ. 4.00μ.μ. Οι μαθητές που έχουν πληρώσει για να πάνε στο Martin Place με λεωφορείο πρέπει να βρίσκονται στο σχολείο το αργότερο μέχρι τις 11.45π.μ. Όλοι οι μαθητές πρέπει να παραμείνουν στην εκδήλωση μέχρι το τέλος της γιορτής, που αναμένεται να τελειώσει κατά τις 4.30μ.μ. Οι εκδηλώσεις θα αρχίσουν στο Martin Place και θα συνεχιστούν με παρέλαση προς το Domain. Επίσης, αυτή την ημέρα εορτάζουμε τον Ευαγγελισμό της Θεοτόκου. Αδημονούμε να δούμε όλες τις οικογένειες του Κολλεγίου της Αγίας Ευφημίας την Κυριακή στην Εκκλησία για να εορτάσουμε αυτή την σπουδαία ημέρα. Οι μαθητές που αδυνατούν να παρευρεθούν πρέπει να έχουν την συγκατάθεση του διευθυντή, του κυρίου Χειράκη. Μέρες Αργίας Λόγω της Εθνικής μας Επετείου και του Ευαγγελισμού της Θεοτόκου, το σχολείο δεν θα λειτουργήσει την Τρίτη, 25 Μαρτίου. Εκκλησιασμός Η ημέρα εκκλησιασμού για τον Απρίλιο είναι ως εξής: Α - Β Γυμνασίου Κυριακή, 6 Απριλίου ώρα 9.30π.μ. Επαγγελματικός Προσανατολισμός της Α Λυκείου (Work Experience) Οι μαθητές της Α Λυκείου θα έχουν την ευκαιρία να συμμετάσχουν σε διάφορα επαγγέλματα επιλογής τους την τελευταία εβδομάδα του Α Τριμήνου, από τη Δευτέρα 7 Απριλίου έως την Παρασκευή 11 Απριλίου. Το πρόγραμμα βοηθάει τους μαθητές να δούνε αν πραγματικά τους ενδιαφέρει να εξασκήσουν ή όχι κάποιο επάγγελμα στο μέλλον. Θεία Κοινωνία Την Τετάρτη 9 Απριλίου, όλοι οι μαθητές θα εκκλησιαστούν, οπότε θα έχουν την ευκαιρία να μεταλάβουν αν έχουν προετοιμαστεί κατάλληλα. Τέλος Τριμήνου Το πρώτο τρίμηνο θα τελειώσει την Παρασκευή 11 Απριλίου. Ευχόμαστε σε όλους τους μαθητές και στις οικογένειές τους Καλό Πάσχα και ευχάριστες διακοπές. Δεύτερο Τρίμηνο Οι μαθητές θα επιστρέψουν για το δεύτερο τρίμηνο την Τρίτη 29 Απριλίου. Υπενθυμίζουμε επίσης τους μαθητές να επιστρέψουν με τη χειμερινή τους στολή. Επίσης, υπενθυμίζουμε τους μαθητές μας να μην ξεχνάνε τους σχολικούς κανονισμούς σχετικά με τη βαφή των μαλλιών που απαγορεύεται. Γι αυτό καλύτερα να την αποφεύγουν. Χ. Χειράκης Διευθυντής Pg. 09
