In accordance with the guidelines and objectives set forth in the Investment Policy of the St. Vasilios Church Endowment Fund solicitations are now being accepted for potential members to fill two openings on the Investment Committee. The responsibility of the Committee is to administer the Investment Policy objectives and constraints of the entire St. Vasilios Church Endowment Fund. Kostas Antoniou Treasurer St Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church FRESH AIR FUND In 1877 The Fresh Air Fund an independent not-for-profit organization was created with one simple mission to allow children living in low-income communities to get away from hot noisy city streets and enjoy free summer experiences in the country. Deborah Stephanides is the Fresh Air Fund Chairperson for the North of Boston area and is looking for volunteer host families to open their homes and hearts to a New York City youngster from July 11 until July 22 this summer. Children in the Fresh Air Fund program are between the ages of six and twelve and are matched to your families needs and interests. Transportation is provided and the Fresh Air Fund provides for any medical expenses for children without insurance. The Fund also provides liability insurance for hosts. There are no financial requirements for hosting a child. Please consider opening your home and heart to an inner city child this summer. The Reading is from St. Paul s Second Letter to the Corinthians 4:6-45 Brethren it is the God who said "Let light shine out of darkness" who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way but not crushed; perplexed but not driven to despair; persecuted but not forsaken; struck down but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. For while we live we are always being given up to death for Jesus' sake so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us but life in you. Since we have the same spirit of faith as he had who wrote "I believed and so I spoke" we too believed and so we speak knowing that He who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into His presence. Sunday of the Publican and Pharise:Triodion Begins Today The Gospel of Luke 18:10-47 The Lord said this parable "Two men went up into the temple to pray one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself 'God I thank you that I am not like other men extortioners unjust adulterers or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week I give tithes of all that I get.' But the tax collector standing far off would not even lift up his eyes to heaven but beat his breast saying 'God be merciful to me a sinner!' I tell you this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled but he who humbles himself will be exalted." CEMETERY VISITS: Due to the number of sacraments 40 day blessings and memorials on Sundays it is difficult to make unscheduled cemetery visits on Sundays after liturgy. If you would like a Trisagion at the graveside you are kindly asked to WELCOME TO OUR VISITORS! Everyone is welcome in the Orthodox Church and may receive the blessed bread (antidoron) at the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy. Sadly the divisions in the church prompt us all to work towards reunited Christianity. The culmination of this reunion will be the ability of all Christians to receive the Eucharist together. Until that blessed day arrives Orthodox Christians who are in good sacramental order are only permitted to receive Holy Communion in the Orthodox Church. If you have any questions or concerns please speak with Father Chris. HOSPITAL VISITS Salem Hospital is making a change in order to be in compliance with new privacy laws. This change will mean that we will no longer receive the list of Orthodox patients in the hospital. So if you or a loved one will be in the hospital please call the church office so that we can pay you a pastoral visit. This change will also affect Beverly Hospital as well. Also families of people in nursing home please call the church office so that their names will be included on the list of residents. Trays $ 145 Candles $ 190 "From our Choir: With the start of Lent we encourage you to participate even more in singing our liturgy. Especially our young singers should come upstairs and join the already growing number of young voices. Our practices are on Tuesday nights at 6:30. In addition to learning our music we also learn how to read music and how to achieve better choral sound. Even if you cannot come to the practices we still encourage you to join us on Sundays. Jr. GOYA Event: We will be going snow tubing at Amesbury Sports Park on Sunday February 24th. We plan to meet at 3:00 PM outside of the Educational Center and will return by 6:30 PM.
