Konstantakos V., Kosmatopoulos K., Nikolaidis S., Laopoulos Th., Measurement of power consumption in digital systems, IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement 55 (5), pp. 1662-1670, 2006 A study on different measurement configurations for the estimation of power consumption of processing systems is presented. The problem addressed is to measure the energy consumed by a digital system during a number of clock cycles and to assign this consumption to a specific group of instructions. This kind of energy measurement provides the information needed for determining the energy consumption of specific software routines that run on digital processing systems. The proposed configuration is expected to provide clear information about the power behavior of single-chip processing systems as it may monitor the energy consumption during different tasks of operation. Furthermore, it may be integrated in the same chip as a peripheral unit that may be turned on periodically as the front-end circuit of an accurate built-in self-test configuration. A2. The software tasks that run on the embedded system are profiled, and their characteristics are analyzed. The type of executed assembly instructions, as well as the number of accesses to the memory and the analog-to-digital converter, is the required information for the derivation of the proposed model. Both master and slave phase-locked loop topologies are implemented by well-known commercial PLLs, directly coupled to one another. The chaotic phenomenon appears in the limit of the operating range of a widely known and used configuration of two PLLs, resulting in a loss of synchronization between the two output frequencies. This intermittent behavior is induced by a crisis, between two attractors in the corresponding phase-space. A4. In order to be used for neutron dosimetry, a thin film of lithium fluoride was deposited on the surface of the gate of the device. The characteristics of the dosemeter, such as the dependence of its response to neutron dose and dose rate, were investigated. The studied dosemeter was very sensitive to gamma rays compared to other dosemeters proposed in the literature. Its response in thermal neutrons was found to be much higher than in fast neutrons and gamma rays. Β. The approach is based on a current monitoring circuit which records the changes in the power supply current of the system without practically interfering with the operation of the system and sums it within a specific time period. The comparison of the resulting power consumption measurement for hardware modules while executing certain tasks (defined in time by the software) with already known values may indicate the good operating condition of the system. In such systems, which are often used in remote operating situations, a self-evaluation procedure is very useful. This procedure may provide vital information about the operating conditions of different sub-systems and modules, including both electronic systems and sensing instruments. These systems usually measure specific parameters, like temperature, pressure etc., by using a combination of sensors, A/D and D/A converters, memory modules, small processors and other miscellaneous modules. Energy measurements performed over a specific time period of several clock cycles determine the overall energy consumption parameters during specific execution of tasks or related to specific groups of instructions.
The proposed configuration can be integrated in the system as a peripheral unit for the evaluation of the core and the system s peripherals, offering built-in self-test ability to a low power system. Moreover, the information provided may prove useful in energy optimization procedures. B8. Konstantakos V., Laopoulos Th., Automated Evaluation of Operation of Electrochemical Sensors for Environmental Monitoring, 1st IMEKO TC 19 International Symposium, 2007 The present paper describes a novel application of a well-known Build-In-Self-Test (BIST) method in order to evaluate the operational condition of a certain type of sensors which are widely used in environmental monitoring instruments (especially in water quality monitoring). It is actually an automated evaluation procedure of the operating conditions of electrochemical sensors (mainly dissolve oxygen and ph sensors for on-line monitoring of water). Such self-validation procedures increase the operating life and the reliability of a sensor, and extend the time-between calibrations or replacements of chemical consumables (electrolyte). The proposed technique is mostly suitable for stand-alone monitoring systems (such as data-loggers or remote stations) which operate continuously in the field of environmental monitoring of water ecosystems (on-line monitoring). This work uses a microcontroller measuring scheme in order to implement the above functionalities and proposes a measuring circuit (that is also described) which is needed to implement such intelligent features. B9. Konstantakos V., Laopoulos Th., A power measuring technique for built-in testing of electrochemical sensors for environmental monitoring, The 2nd International Design and Test Workshop (IDT), pp. 82-87, 2007 A built-in configuration for monitoring the good operating condition in real-time of an instrumentation system that includes electrochemical sensors is presented in this work. These sensors (mainly dissolve oxygen and ph sensors for online monitoring of water) are widely used in environmental monitoring instruments. The approach is based on a current monitoring circuit which records the changes in the power supply current of such a sensor without practically interfering with its operation and sums this current within a specific time period. The comparison of the resulting power consumption measurement with already known values may indicate the good operating condition of these sensors. The proposed technique is mostly suitable for stand-alone monitoring systems (such as data-loggers or remote stations) which operate continuously in the field of environmental monitoring of water ecosystems (online monitoring). This work uses a microcontroller measuring scheme for implementing the above functionalities. B10. Borovyi A., Konstantakos V., Kochan V., Turchenko V., Sachenko A., Laopoulos Th., Using neural network for the evaluation of power consumption of instructions execution, IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference, pp. 676-681, 2008 In this work a method is being proposed for estimating the power consumption of digital processing systems by the use of neural networks. The case study is an ARM7TDMI processor. Real hardware data are already known for this processor and provided for neural network training. Many different attempts for training have been made, by combining different sets of training vectors to the neural network and initial results have been extracted. Results indicate that the proposed approach is good for power consumption estimation, and with a proper selection of training vectors, the neural network can provide results with increased accuracy. Tsakiropoulou Ev., Konstantakos V., Leiacker R., Rettinger G., Lindemann J., Temperature and Humidity Measurements in Nasal Cavity, IEEE International Workshop on Medical Measurements and Applications, pp 69-72, 2009 This work presents a method for making temperature and humidity measurements within the nasal cavity. First, the need for obtaining such measurements and the necessity of implementing such a practical set up is pointed out. Then, a measuring scheme is presented with focused characteristics like accuracy, and fast response to the quantities being monitored. B12. Konstantakos V., Laopoulos Th., Built-in energy measurements in zigbee systems, IEEE International Workshop on Intelligent Data Acquisition and Advanced Computing Systems: Technology and Applications (IDAACS), pp 53-58, 2009 The problem addressed in this work is the development of a technique for evaluating the energy consumption of ZigBee systems during normal operation. For this purpose, a simple ZigBee system consisting of a transmitter and a receiver is being measured with the help of an energy measuring scheme. The measurements are being held while these systems operate (either while communicating or while standing idle) and the resulting waveforms provide indications of the operations being held. Besides the energy exploration of such devices, this approach proves to be a way of understanding
the running conditions of such a system only by monitoring its energy consumption. Also, it can be used for verifying the good operating condition of it. B13. The setup was implemented in National Instrument s LabView environment and it was structured in such a way that it is not dependent of the signal-registering devices used. The circuit evaluation is achieved by registering only one signal. An experimental intermittency example confirms the system s effectiveness. B14. The dosemeters were manufactured at LAAS-CNRS Laboratory in Toulouse, France. They consist of two identical MOSFETs, fabricated on the same silicon chip and showed excellent linearity for wide dose ranges. In order to be used as neutron dosemeters, a thin film of lithium fluoride was deposited on the surface of the MOS gate above the Cr layer. Their sensitivity to thermal neutrons, up to 1eV, is much higher than that of intermediate-fast neutrons.
