Pilot project on cardoon cultivation for biomass production Gregory Mavridis - Civil Engineer Member of the rural development section of West Macedonia Development Company
Research project Evaluation of burning the lignite in combination with biomass, regarding the biomass provision from the local area The necessary biomass quantities : 5-6 tn of dry biomass were used in autumn 2009 during the beginning of the pilot stage of burning in laboratories in Germany 50 tn of dry biomass were used in autumn 2009 during the pilot stage of burning by PPC 5.500 6.000 tn of dry biomass were used in autumn 2010 during the final pilot stage of burning by PPC.
Aims of the combination burning Evaluation of heaters function Specification of the amount of the mixed fuels used during the project Specification of the necessary biomass quantities Specification of the final biomass form (e.g. in balls or as processed product or other various forms)
Organizations REGION OF WEST MACEDONIA PREFECTURE OF KOZANI WEST MACEDONIA DEVELOPMENT COMPANY (ANKO) PUBLIC POWER CORPORATION S.A. (PPC) INSTITUTE FOR SOLID FUELS TECHNOLOGY & APPLICATIONS (ISFTA) LOCAL FARMERS
Have decided the completion of the project: Development of alternative activities using biomass In order that PPC achieve its goals regarding the reinforcement of the use of Renewable Energy Sources
Purpose of the project Contribution to the employment of local citizens Maintenance of the population in the rural areas Promoting the variation in the agricultural process, which will work as an answer to the C.A.P. (Common Agriculture Policy)
The type of the plant Wild artichoke called cynara cardunculus, known as Cardoon.
Advantages Survival in cold climates Perennial plant Continuous harvest lasting from 10 12 years. Minimum cultivation care (2-3 watering Spring - Summer) Minimum needs and costs for irrigation, fertilization and pesticides Great performance (1.700-2.500 kilos in irrigated fields)
Benefits Reduction of the use of fossil fuels Possible to grow even in wastelands and rocky grounds Protection against soil erosion Contribution to the increase of the soil fertility enrichment with organic substances
Contribution to the denitrification of the soils and waters The burning of the biomass involves no emission of carbon dioxide. As a result it contributes to the decrease of the greenhouse effect Due to the fact that biomass includes no sulfur, it vitally contributes to the decrease of sulfur dioxide emission, which is responsible for acid rain
Calorific Value The final product consists of two raw materials: Biomass from the hole plant Biodiesel from the seeds Cardoon Pellets 16-18 18 MJ / kg calorific value, i.e. 2 kilos of pellets equal 1 lt of petrol Cardoon : 3.714-5.000 kcal/kg including seeds Lignite: 1.200-1.400 kcal/kg ή 5-6 MJ / kg
Development cycle of cardoon Autumn Winter June - July September (rebirth) August (Harvest) June - July 6/19
April
Seeding Season : Spring or Autumn Density : 75 cm horizontally 15-18 18 cm vertically Quantity : 350-400 gr / 0,1 Hectare Cost : 50 / kg => 20 / 0,1 Hectare

Beginning of the project Publicity of the project - March 09 Applications Submission Evaluation of applications Contract signing Seed delivery Beginning of the cultivation Monitoring the cultivation April 09
Contract Signing 80 contracts were signed between ANKO and local farmers from the areas of Ptolemaida and Kozani and the total cultivation area was 395 hectares
Implementation Process Contract signing between ANKO and farmers Seed delivery to the farmers Planting all 100% of the fields Measuring and estimation done by ANKO, to confirm the area claimed by the farmers by means of the GIS system. Technical support and advice Observation during the planting and growing procedure Funding the project

Project Budget 1 Year (2009) a) Seeding cost-cost of other cultivating affairs during the 1 year:140,00 /0,1 ha x 400 ha = 560.000,00 2 Year (2010) b) Cultivation of the 2nd year : 60 / 0,1 ha x 400 ha =240.000,00 1 and 2 Year c) Technical support = 40.000,00 c.1) Soil analysis c.2) Scientific support c.3) Biomass analysis d) Coordination and management of the project = 110.000,00 Total Budget = 950.000,00
Funding Sources a)special Developmental Funding Program 2007-2011 2011 Project budget (2009-2010) 2010) = 950.000,00 b)ppc S.A. for the completion of the pilot stages of the project, during autumn 2009-2010 2010 51,00 /tn x 6.000 tn = 306.000,00
Conclusion Through this pilot project, we set the basis for a more systematic cultivation of the energy plants, for biomass production in the area and the reconstruction of the cultivation methods in order to succeed in more effective, productive and environment-friendly cultivations
Thank you very much!!
