General Marking Guidance All candidates must receive the same treatment. Examiners must mark the first candidate in exactly the same way as they mark the last. Mark schemes should be applied positively. Candidates must be rewarded for what they have shown they can do rather than penalised for omissions. Examiners should mark according to the mark scheme not according to their perception of where the grade boundaries may lie. There is no ceiling on achievement. All marks on the mark scheme should be used appropriately. All the marks on the mark scheme are designed to be awarded. Examiners should always award full marks if deserved, i.e. if the answer matches the mark scheme. Examiners should also be prepared to award zero marks if the candidate s response is not worthy of credit according to the mark scheme. Where some judgement is required, mark schemes will provide the principles by which marks will be awarded and exemplification may be limited. When examiners are in doubt regarding the application of the mark scheme to a candidate s response, the team leader must be consulted. Crossed out work should be marked UNLESS the candidate has replaced it with an alternative response.

Mark (20)
Question Number 2(a) Answer Mark Many guests and quite a few tourists also, who happened to be there by chance, gathered to watch the weddings of 100 couples from Israel and Russia, which took place in our city yesterday. The happy couples accompanied by relatives and friends arrived by boat at the port of Larnaca in the morning. The ceremony took place at three in the afternoon on the beach. Even though the brides and grooms came from other countries, after the ceremony, the newlyweds ate the traditional pastitsio and danced Cypriot dances. A resident of the city told us: Other than the fact that a wedding is certainly something beautiful, the whole event is particularly important because it links Larnaca with happy memories. It shows that Larnaca is a hospitable city which has a lot to offer to tourists. (20)
Question Number 2(b) Answer An excursion to the mountain is always something pleasant, especially during the summer months when the heat is often unbearable. To be honest though, how many times do we visit this wonderful mountain, Troodos, and fail to pay proper attention to the nature around us? We hear the birds and we don t know what they are. We are at the heart of nature s beauty and we spend our time shut up in a restaurant. So, if we decide to step out for a stroll and enjoy nature, let us not forget some basic things with regard to the protection of the environment. We pick up all our rubbish before we leave. We do not throw it on the ground! We keep it until we find a bin. We do not pick flowers! We buy them from a florist s. We do not disturb plants! Many of them are rare. If we wish, we can take a photo of the plants and leave them in peace. Mark (20)
