U N D E R G R A D U A T E C O U R S E S (Spring Semester 2015-2016) Section of Ancient and Medieval History Byzantine History (VIS) VIS 506 Demetrios Kyritses The Byzantine Empire, 1000-1200: two centuries of change (Lecture course) 5 ECTS Until a few decades ago, the eleventh and twelfth centuries were thought to be a phase of steady decline, bridging the supposed apogee under the Macedonian emperors with the fall of Constantinople to the Fourth Crusade in 1204. More profound investigations into the economy and cultural production of the era have radically altered that perception. Today we consider these two centuries to be a period of marked economic growth as well as social transformation, during which Byzantine art and literature explore new paths. This is an introductory course, that uses selected sources of various kinds in order to illustrate the period. VIS 366 Demetrios Kyritses Byzantine Constantinople. History of a city (Seminar) 10 ECTS The seminar s subject is Constantinople, from its foundation in the fourth century until the fall to the Ottoman Turks in 1453. The course does not focus on monuments, but on broader historical issues, such as urban settlement and population, economic and social life, the organization of urban space and its various functions, economic, political and imaginary. 2
Section of Modern and Contemporary History Modern and Contemporary History (INCH) INCH180 Efi Avdela The postwar world (Lecture course) 5 ECTS This course will consider how the world was shaped during the first decades after WW2, the deadliest in history, primarily from the view point of Europe. We will examine issues such as: the human and material cost of the war, relief for the survivors, the question of retributions, the efforts for reconstruction, the geographical displacement of power, the mounting polarization and division of the world, the emergence of new international hegemonies in the context of the Cold War, the social continuities and ruptures in the West and in the East, the process of decolonization and its consequences, the new cultural controversies etc. INCH395 Efi Avdela Sources and methods in history (Seminar) 10 ECTS The seminar aims at familiarising the students with the fundamentals of historical research. In respect to documentation and sources the issues which will be examined include: archives and the politics of their constitution and maintenance; non archival records (press, oral testimonies, visual sources, internet etc.). Also, how to make a bibliography, how to draft a research proposal, how to combine different kinds of sources, etc. 3
Section of Archaeology and History of Art Classical Archaeology (KAR) KAR 180 Dimitris Bosnakis The archaeology of daily life in ancient Greece (Lecture course) 5 ECTS Course summary Family, Education, Calendar, Festivals and Entertainment, Personal Appearance, Food and Drink, Slaves, Death and Afterlife are some of the main topics of the lecture. The study of private aspects of Greek culture and its various facets of daily life, from domestic architecture to magical practices and superstition, offer a more comprehensive view of the ancient society and the different ways of life, as they existed between men and women, freemen and slaves. Students will learn to distinguish the styles of local productions centres, and their relations with one another, but also to use the workable chronology system, in the light of the present evidence. The lectures will focus on the movements of Orphism, the Bauhaus school, De Stijl, Cubo-Futurism, and Suprematism and, specifiacaly on the stylistic and aesthetic inroads which informed their formation. Laboratory courses EM001 Alexandros Maridakis Basic Computing Skills (Introduction to ICT) Laboratory course for groups of first-year undergraduate students (up to 30 people). The course consists of 4 lessons/classes which will be repeated 3 times during each semester, so that all first-year students will be able to attend it (approximately 90 students per semester). EM002 Ariadne Gazi Internet & Humanities: Historical background- Website Categories - Assessment methods - Online research tools Laboratory course for groups of undergraduate students (up to 30 people). The course consists of 4 lessons/classes which will be repeated 3 times during each semester, so that a greater number of students will be able to attend it. Each 3-hour lesson is offered once a week and consists of two parts, a theoretical and a practical one (for the latter the Computer-Lab of the Faculty of Letters will be used). 8
