Archangel Michael Church Η Εκκλησία του Αρχαγγέλου Μιχαήλ 100 Fairway Drive, Port Washington, NY 11050 Phone: (516) 944-3180 Web Site: www.archangelmichaelchurch.org Clergy: Fr. John Lardas, Fr. Joshua Pappas, Fr. Dennis Strouzas March 5, 2017 Sunday of Orthodoxy 4 th Mode 4 th Morning Gospel Orthodoxy grants icons an important position in the life of the Church. God has blessed their use. We know this blessing firsthand when we pray before icons and experience the Presence. We know this blessing also from observable miracles; our Tradition abounds with weeping icons, healing icons, and icons that appeared or were salvaged supernaturally. But the glory of icons wasn t always so apparent. Iconoclasm began in the 8 th century at the hands of a Byzantine emperor. The 7 th Ecumenical Council in 787 put an end to iconoclasm, but it resurfaced again initiated by an emperor in the 9 th century. A Byzantine empress, St. Theodora, pushed icons to their final restoration in 843. Though iconoclasm was stirred by political motivations, theological arguments developed as well. Many fought back in support of icons and true faith, but St. John of Damascus soared above the rest. His Three Treatises on the Divine Images is the standard, classic defense of iconography. In this work, he explains that Christ s Incarnation transfigures our understanding of God, humankind, and creation: Of old, God the immaterial and formless was never depicted, but now that God has been seen in the flesh and has associated with humankind, I depict what I ve seen of God. I don t venerate the matter; I venerate the creator of matter, who became matter for my sake and accepted to dwell in matter and through it worked my salvation. This good news was at the heart of iconography s triumph in 843. Immediately a celebratory procession took place, in which icons were restored in the great cathedral of Byzantium, Hagia Sophia. The celebration coincided with the first Sunday of Lent, and a new tradition was born. What were they celebrating? Not just beautiful, spiritual, pious art. They were celebrating the gift of salvation accomplished through the Incarnation. God becomes flesh in order to redeem the entire created world; what is united with God is also being saved, says St. Gregory the Theologian. Christ empowers us receive His life, to become little gods full of humility and self-emptying love. By deification the saints are gods the undeserved gift of grace makes this possible. With this gift comes tremendous responsibility. It carries implications for large, farreaching questions as well as the decisions and actions of daily life how should we approach ourselves, one another, and whatever lies in front of us? As icons of God, we should continually ask such questions. The first Sunday of Lent when we remember the final restoration of icons gradually developed into the Sunday of Orthodoxy, when we celebrate the victory of True Faith over any opposition that threatens the integrity of the Gospel.

Saints and Feasts On this day, the first Sunday of Lent, we commemorate the restoration of the holy and venerable icons enacted by the ever-memorable Emperors of Constantinople, Michael and his mother Theodora; the holy monastic martyr Conon of Isauria; the holy Martyr Conon the gardener; our devout father Mark the Monk. holy Martyr Evlogios of Palestine; the holy Martyr Evlampios; the holy Martyr Archelaos and the 142 Martyrs with him died by the sword. Hymn of the Feast (2 nd Mode) We venerate Your immaculate icon, O good Lord, and entreat You to forgive our offences, O Christ our God. By Your own choice you were pleased to ascend the Cross in the flesh, to deliver us, whom You created, from our slavery to the foe. Therefore we cry to You with gratitude: You have filled all things with joy, O our Savior, by coming to save the world. Resurrectional Hymn (4 th Mode) The joyful news of Your resurrection was proclaimed by the angel to the women disciples having thrown off the curse that fell on Adam. They ran elatedly to tell the apostles: death has been vanquished. Christ our God is risen from the dead granting all the world His great mercy. Hymn of the Archangels Supreme Commanders of * the hosts of the Heavens * we, the unworthy, importune and beseech you * that by your supplications you encircle us * in the shelter of the wings * of your heavenly glory * guarding us who now fall down * and cry to you with fervor. * Deliver us from dangers of all kinds * as the great marshals of the heavenly hosts on high. Kontakion of the Feast (Pl. 4 th Mode) O Champion General, I your City now ascribe to you * triumphant anthems as the tokens of my gratitude, * being rescued from the terrors, O Theotokos. * Inasmuch as you have power unassailable, * from all kinds of perils free me so that unto you * I may cry aloud: * Rejoice, O unwedded Bride.

Today s Scripture Readings St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 11:24-26, 32-40 Brethren, by faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, choosing rather to share ill-treatment with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. And what more shall I say? For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets -- who through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, received promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of the sword, won strength out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign enemies to flight. Women received their dead by resurrection. Some were tortured, refusing to accept release, that they might rise again to a better life. Others suffered mocking and scourging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were killed with the sword; they went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, ill-treated -- of whom the world was not worthy -- wandering over deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth. And all these, though well attested by their faith, did not receive what was promised, since God had foreseen something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect. THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO JOHN 1:43-51 At that time, Jesus decided to go to Galilee. And he found Philip and said to him, "Follow me." Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael, and he said to him, "We have found him of whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph." Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see." Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and said of him, "Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!" Nathanael said to him, "How do you know me?" Jesus answered him, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you." Nathanael answered him, "Rabbi, you are the son of God! You are the King of Israel!" Jesus answered him, "Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You shall see greater things than these." And he said to him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man."

Synodikon of the Seventh Ecumenical Council As the prophets beheld, as the apostles have taught, as the Church has received, as the teachers have declared, as the world has agreed, as grace has shown forth, as truth has been revealed, as falsehood has been dispelled, as wisdom has become manifest, as Christ awarded; Thus we declare; thus we affirm; thus we proclaim Christ our true God, and honor His saints in words, writings, thoughts, sacrifices, churches, and holy icons; On the one hand, worshiping and reverencing Christ as God and Lord, and on the other, honoring the saints as true servants of the same Lord of all, and offering them proper veneration. This is the faith of the apostles. This is the faith of the fathers. This is the faith of the Orthodox. This is the faith on which the world is established. Therefore, with fraternal and filial love we praise the heralds of the faith, those who with glory and honor have struggled for the faith, and we say: to the champions of Orthodoxy, 'faithful emperors, most-holy patriarchs, hierarchs, teachers, martyrs, and confessors: May your memory be eternal. (Eternal be their memory x3). Let us beseech God that we may be instructed and strengthened by the trials and struggles of these saints, which they endured for the faith even unto death, and by their teachings, entreating that we may to the end imitate their godly life. May we be deemed worthy of obtaining our requests through the mercy and grace of the Great and First Hierarch, Christ our God, through the intercessions of our glorious Lady, the Theotokos and evervirgin Mary, the divine angels and all the Saints. Prokeimenon: Who is so great a God as our God? You alone are the God who does wonders.
