PASTORAL MESSAGE Dear Parishioners, The Greek Cultural Festival is behind us and finally, we are rested. Soon we will be preparing for an action packed Autumn with many events: the Metropolis Christmas Open-House, a visit from Basile, the comedian and the Golf Tournament and many other fellowship events. As we reflect on the Festival and prepare to discuss its merits and areas of improvement in the upcoming meeting on July 15th, I encourage each and every one of us to remember that we are here to serve the Church and that we are called at all times to approach in obedience and humility. We are to be a family, one body the Body of Christ. Let us not allow our egos to cause unnecessary separation and animosity. St. Maximus the Confessor states, the root of all evil is self-love. Ponder on this!!! When we miss the mark, it is always because we place our desires first - before the will of the Lord. Let us put ourselves aside and place Christ in the forefront of our lives. As we chant during the Divine Liturgy, Let us set aside all worldly cares that we may receive the King of all. In Christ s Love, Rev. Father Jon Boukis Proistamenos
HOW OLD IS THE ORTHODOX FAITH? By Rev. Dr. Miltiades Efthimiou If you are a Lutheran, your religion was founded by Martin Luther, an exmonk of the Catholic Church, in the year 1517. If you belong to the church of England, your religion was founded by King Henry VIII in the year 1534 because the Pope would not grant him a divorce with the right to re-marry. If you are Presbyterian, your religion was founded by John Knox in Scotland in the year 1560. If you are a Congregationalist, your religion was originated by Robert Brown in Holland in 1582. If you are a Protestant Episcopalian, your religion was an offshoot of the Church of England, founded by Samuel Senbury in the American Colonies in the 17th century. If you are Baptist, you owe the tenets of your religion to John Smyth, who launched it in Amsterdam in 1606. If you are of the Dutch Reform Church, you recognize Michelis Jones as founder because he originated your religion in New York in 1628. If you are Methodist, your religion was founded by John and Charles Wesley in England in 1774. If you are Mormon (Latter Day Saints), Joseph Smith started your religion in Palmyra, New York in 1829. If you worship with the Salvation Army, your sect began with William Booth in London in 1865. If you are Christian Scientist, you look to 1879 as the year which your religion was born and to Mary Baker Eddy as the founder. If you belong to one of the religious organizations known as Church of the Nazarene, Pentecostal Gospel, Holiness Church or Jehovah s Witnesses, your religion is one of hundreds of new sects founded by men within the past hundred years. If you are Roman Catholic, your church shared the same rich apostolic and doctrinal heritage as the Orthodox Church for the first thousand years of its history since during the first millennium they were one and the same Church. Lamentably, in 1054, the Pope of Rome broke away from the other four Apostolic Patriarchates (which included Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch and Jerusalem), by tampering with the Original Creed of the Church, and considering himself to be infallible. Thus your church is 1,000 years old. If you are Orthodox Christian, your religion was founded in the year 33 by Jesus Christ the Son of God. It has not changed since that time. Our church is now almost 2,000 years old. And it is for this reason, that Orthodoxy, the Church of the Apostles and the Fathers if considered the true one Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. This is the greatest legacy that we can pass on to the young people of the new millennium!

SAINT PARASKEVI Celebrated July 26th Saint Paraskevi was born on a Friday (in Greek, Paraskevi), and was given this name, w h i c h m eans " p r e p a r a t i o n " o r "preparedness" (see Matt. 27:62, Mark 15:42, Luke 23:54, and John 19:31, where 'Friday' is called "the day of the preparation"). From childhood she was instructed in the sacred letters and devoted herself to the study of the divine Scriptures, while leading a monastic life and guiding many to the Faith of Christ. During the reign of the Emperor Antoninus Pius, she was apprehended because she was a Christian and was urged to worship the idols, but she answered with the words of Jeremias: "Let the gods that have not made heaven and the earth perish from off the earth" (Jer. 10:11). Because of this she endured exceedingly painful torments, and was beheaded in the year 140. The faithful pray to her for the healing of eye ailments. DORMITION OF ST. ANNA The Mother of the Theotokos July 25 According to tradition, Anna, the ancestor of God, lived for sixtynine years, and her spouse Joachim, for eighty; according to one account, Saint Joachim died two years before Saint Anna. The Theotokos had been orphaned of both her parents already when she was eleven years of age, when she was living in the Temple. Saint Anna is invoked for conceiving children, and for help in difficult childbirth.
