Message from Father George We welcome our Spiritual Father, His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios, to Holy Trinity Cathedral. We are most grateful for his love and support of our Community and pray that our Good and Loving God grant him many years: ΕΙΣ ΠΟΛΛΑ ΕΤΙ ΔΕΣΠΟΤΑ! My Beloved Ones, As you know, we are approaching the end of the Advent Fast. Fasting periods are very important for all Orthodox Christians in order to prepare ourselves for a major feast, in this case the Nativity of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. This week we should go out of our way to prepare our souls. Of course, we have spent a lot of time shopping during this season so we can demonstrate our love for friends and family. But now, this last week should be dedicated to ourselves. Love for others is the Christian way, but at the same time, we should not forget our spiritual selves. We must think about the Nativity and the precious gift that God has given to us. As St. Paul states, our Father gave His Only Begotten Son out of the love and compassion He had for humankind so that we might reconcile ourselves to Him. For our forefathers, Adam and Eve, had broken away from God through disobedience, and the only way we could reconcile ourselves was through Jesus Christ: the New Adam. He has opened the doors of Paradise to each one of us; and, it is, therefore, up to us to determine how we are going to reconcile ourselves to Him. The doors began to open for us on the day of our baptism, and now that we are given a foretaste of the Kingdom of God, we must work to remain there to maintain that connection to our Lord Jesus Christ. We can accomplish this not only by indicating our love for each other, but also love for our spiritual selves. We must go to confession and must also consider how we are using our time, talent, and treasure as God s children. Of course, we must always remain optimistic for God is our Father, Who loves us and waits with open arms to receive us. But, it is upon each one of us to understand our sinfulness and to ask forgiveness. This is the path on which we will celebrate Christmas in a truly Christian way, and I hope and pray that all of you in the Metropolis of Atlanta and throughout the world will find the way to return to our Lord Jesus Christ as He is coming to the earth for you, for me, and for all of us. +ALEXIOS Metropolitan of Atlanta (from the Atlanta Metropolis website: atlmetropolis.org) ANGEL TREE Once again, the Philoptochos Society is accepting donations for the Angel Tree Project. With input from Holy Trinity PTA, HOPE & JOY, and GOYA, the project helps special families within the Cathedral Community. Major grocery store and Wal-Mart gift cards of any value will be collected in the Coffee Room today, December 18, which is your last chance to contribute. Please see Diana Peterson with any questions on this endeavor. BOARD OF TRUSTEES ELECTION RESULTS Pending ratification by His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios, the following candidates were elected to the 2017 Board of Trustees: Maria Anastasiou; Nektarios (Aki) Christakis; Ares Christakis, MD; Angela Fyssas-Lear; and Barbara Stavis Wolf. CATHEDRAL CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS The Cathedral family sincerely thanks Evangelia Kouniaris and her assistants, who decorated the Cathedral for the Nativity Season. The group included Faith Kyame, Stella Lykourinou, and Georgia Zervoudis. CHRISTMAS CHURCH SERVICES SCHEDULE Please check the Christmas schedule, which was mailed to your home, for all details on upcoming church services through Epiphany. EPIPHANY SWIMMERS The 4th Annual Epiphany Celebration will take place on Sunday, January 8, 2017. Members of the community, including ALL GOYANS and young adults, are encouraged to apply to be a Cross Retrieval swimmer. This is a wonderful opportunity to spiritually celebrate the baptism of Christ in the Jordan River. Swimmers will attempt to retrieve the blessed wooden cross from Bayou St. John in front of the Cathedral. The one, who retrieves the cross, receives a special blessing from the Church, a gold cross and chain, a personal plaque, and his name engraved on the Theophany Plaque in the Hellenic Cultural Center. All swimmers receive a special blessing in the Church prior to the swim, are honored for their participation in this celebration of our Faith, and are recognized at the Epiphany Luncheon Program. Applications, which are available in the Narthex and Cathedral office, must be submitted by today, Sunday, December 18. METROPOLITAN ALEXIOS' PASTORIAL VISIT The Cathedral family warmly welcomes His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios, who celebrates today a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy at Holy Trinity Cathedral and afterward will view the annual Sunday Church School Christmas Pageant staged in the Cathedral. A Lenten luncheon sponsored by Holy Trinity PTA and the Parish Council will follow in the gymnasium. The entire congregation is invited to partake in these activities.

18η ΔΕΚΕΜΒΡΙΟΥ 2016 ΚΥΡΙΑΚΗ ΠΡΟ ΤΗΣ ΧΡΙΣΤΟΥ ΓΕΝΝΗΣΕΩΣ Ἑωθινόν Δ 18 TH DECEMBER 2016 SUNDAY BEFORE THE NATIVITY OF CHRIST Eothion 4 Ἀπολυτίκιον τῆς Ἀνάστασης Ἦχος α Τοῦ λίθου σφραγισθέντος ὑπὸ τῶν Ἰουδαίων, καὶ στρατιωτῶν φυλασσόντων τὸ ἄχραντόν σου σῶμα, ἀνέστης τριήμερος Σωτήρ, δωρούμενος τῷ κόσμῳ τὴν ζωήν. Resurrection Apolytikion Tone 1 When the stone was sealed by the Jews and the soldiers were guarding Your immaculate Body, You rose on the third day, O Savior, granting life unto the world. Wherefore, the powers of the Heavens cried out to You, O Lifegiver: Glory to Your Resurrection, O Christ. Glory to Your Kingdom. Glory to Your dispensation, O only Friend of man. Apolytikion of the Fathers Tone 2 Great are the accomplishments of faith. In the fountain of flame the three Holy Youths rejoiced as though they were resting by the waters. And the Prophet Daniel showed himself to be a shepherd to the lions, as though they were sheep. Through their prayers O Christ our God, save our souls. Apolytikion of the Holy Trinity Plagal Tone 4 Blessed are You, O Christ our God, who made fishermen all-wise, sending upon them the Holy Spirit and, through them, netting the world. O Loving One, glory to You. Kontakion of the Nativity Tone 3 On this day the Virgin comes to the cave to give birth to God the Word ineffably, Who was before all the ages. Dance for joy, O earth, on hearing the gladsome tidings; with the Angels and the shepherds now glorify Him Who is willing to be gazed on as a young Child Who before the ages is God. On the Sunday that occurs on or immediately after the eighteenth of this month, Orthodox faithful celebrate all those who from ages past have been well-pleasing to God, beginning from Adam even unto Joseph the Betrothed of the Most Holy Theotokos, according to genealogy as the Evangelist Luke recorded historically. (Luke 3:23-38) Also commemorated on this day are the Prophets and Prophetesses, especially the Prophet Daniel and the Holy Three Children.

THE EPISTLE Hebrews 11:9-10, 32-40 BRETHREN, by faith Abraham sojourned in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. For he looked forward to the city which has foundation, whose builder and maker is God. And what more shall I say? For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets - who through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, received promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of the sword, won strength out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight. Women received their dead by resurrection. Some were tortured, refusing to accept release, that they might rise again to a better life. Others suffered mocking and scourging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were tempted, they were killed with the sword; they went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, ill-treated - of whom the world was not worthy - wandering over deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth. And all these, though well attested by their faith, did not receive what was promised, since God had foreseen something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect. THE GOSPEL Matthew 1:1-25 The book of the Genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram, and Ram the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon, and Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse, and Jesse the father of David the king. And David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah, and Solomon the father of Rehoboam, and Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asa, and Asa the father of Jehoshaphat, and Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, and Joram the father of Uzziah, and Uzziah the father of Jotham, and Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah, and Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, and Manasseh the father of Amos, and Amos the father of Josiah, and Josiah the father of Jechoniah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon. And after the deportation to Babylon: Jechoniah was the father of Shealtiel, and Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, and Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, and Abiud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor, and Azor the father of Zadok, and Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud, and Eliud the father of Eleazar, and Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ. So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ fourteen generations. Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit; and her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. But as he considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit; she will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: "Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and his name shall be called Emmanuel"(which means, God with us). When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took his wife, but knew her not until she had borne a son; and he called his name Jesus.
