Sunday April 7 2013 Hymns Following the Gospel (Small Entrance) Apolytikion Let the heavens rejoice and the earth be glad for the Lord by His Might has created a Dominion. He has conquered death by death and become the first-born of the dead. He has delivered us from the depths of Hades and has granted the world great mercy. Apolytikion Lord save Your people and bless Your inheritance granting our rulers to prevail over adversaries and protecting Your commonwealth by Your Cross. Apolytikion for St. Vasilios Your message was carried throughout the world. As it received your mighty word By which you divinely made manifest And clarified the nature of existing things You set in order the customs of men You who are royal priesthood! Prokeimenon. Mode Plagal 2. Psalm 27.91 O Lord save your people and bless your inheritance. Verse: To you O Lord I have cried O my God. St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 4:14-16;5:1-6 BRETHREN since we have a high priest who has passed through the heavens Jesus the Son of God let us hold fast our confession. For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward since he himself is beset with weakness. Because of this he is bound to offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not take the honor upon himself but he is called by God just as Aaron was. So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest but was appointed by him who said to him "Thou art my Son today I have begotten thee"; as he says also in another place "Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek." 10 Προκείμενον. 3

Sunday of the Holy Cross The Gospel of Mark 8:34-38;9-1 Today on the Sunday of the Holy Cross a second tray will be passed to benefit the Holy Cross Seminary. The Lord said: "If anyone wishes to come after me let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation of him will the Son of man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." And he said to them "Truly I say to you there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power." Notice of Endowment Fund Grant Opportunity In accordance with the Investment Policy of St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church the Investment Committee has met to recommend the grantable amount of the annual proceeds of the Endowment Fund. The total annual grantable amount is to be the total annual aggregate return (net of expenses) in excess of the CPI Index. In other words: Total Grantable Amount = Total Annual Return Expenses Inflation Fund Expenses The principal of the St. Vasilios Endowment Fund will remain inviolate and irrevocable. It is understood that following each calendar year end the investment committee will calculate the allowable granted amount based on the above formula. As such at each first general assembly of the year the investment committee will propose and recommend its use of the grant which must be approved by a majority of the general assembly. No annual grant giving is mandatory. Organizations and individuals of St. Vasilios are encouraged to submit their grant proposals in writing to the Investment Committee through the Church office no later than April 22 2013. The Endowment Fund may be used for any purpose consistent with the mission of the Church. This would include but not limited to such projects as the following: 1. Unbudgeted maintenance of buildings and grounds. 4. Program initiatives for children youth or adult ministries. 5. Music program for special enhancements or additions. The complete Investment Policy is available for review at the church office. 4 9

FRESH AIR FUND In 1877 The Fresh Air Fund an independent not-for-profit organization was created with one simple mission to allow children living in low-income communities to get away from hot noisy city streets and enjoy free summer experiences in the country. Deborah Stephanides is the Fresh Air Fund Chairperson for the North of Boston area and is looking for volunteer host families to open their homes and hearts to a New York City youngster from July 11 until July 22 this summer. Children in the Fresh Air Fund program are between the ages of six and twelve and are matched to your families needs and interests. Transportation is provided and the Fresh Air Fund provides for any medical expenses for children without insurance. The Fund also provides liability insurance for hosts. There are no financial requirements for hosting a child. Please consider opening your home and heart to an inner city child this summer. A visit to the home of a warm and loving host family can make all the difference in the world to an inner city child. Please call 978 744 8531 or visit freshair.org for more information. If you would like a Trisagion at the graveside you are kindly asked to make an appointment during the week by calling the church office. WELCOME TO OUR VISITORS! Everyone is welcome in the Orthodox Church and may receive the blessed bread (antidoron) at the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy. Sadly the divisions in the church prompt us all to work towards reunited Christianity. The culmination of this reunion will be the ability of all Christians to receive the Eucharist together. Until that blessed day arrives Orthodox Christians who are in good sacramental order are only permitted to receive Holy Communion in the Orthodox Church. If you have any questions or concerns please speak with Father Chris. HOSPITAL VISITS Salem Hospital is making a change in order to be in compliance with new privacy laws. This change will mean that we will no longer receive the list of Orthodox patients in the hospital. So if you or a loved one will be in the hospital please call the church office so that we can pay you a pastoral visit. This change will also affect Beverly Hospital as well. Also families of people in nursing home please call the church office so that their names will be included on the list of residents. The Reception begins at 5:30 p.m. The theme of this year s Dinner is taken from I Timothy 4.12: Let no one despise your youth but set the believers an example in speech and conduct in love in faith in purity. As usual every Community has the opportunity to select an individual to be honored at this Dinner that has offered exemplary service to the Parish. In keeping with our Metropolis focus this year of reaching out to our Young Adults/Young Professionals we have selected a Young Adult (aged 25-50) who has taken the responsibility of Church service seriously and has begun to integrate it as a way of life. This years honoree is Sophia Nanis Pappas. There will be reservation forms in the bulletin and in the church office and we hope that many parishioners will attend the Banquet to support and honor Sophia and all the great things she has done for St. Vasilios. From our Choir: It was wonderful to see so many young people at the youth assembly a few days ago. Someone had asked if there was a way to have the music that sing every Sunday available to learn. I have sang most of the music we sing every Sunday and have put it online in our music page. Please visit the choir link in our website or go to www.mrvsmusic.com St. Vasilios Choirs to listen to our liturgy. FINANCIAL UPDATE The following donations were received on March 31 2013.
